Arizona, traditional powerhouse?
I'm watching Around the Horn on the WWL, and I heard Jay Mariotti call Arizona the "traditional powerhouse" of the PAC-10, when he was talking about Timmay turning down Arizon job. Once again, the MSM fails to recognize the true traditional powerhouse of the PAC-10. If you want to talk about tradition look no further than comparing 11 NCAA Basketball championships to the "standard's" 1 NCAA title. Doesn't surprise me that they try to make it seem as if USC is closing the gap on UCLA basketball.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Jay Mariotti is a
known jackass. I believe his wikipedia page even said so a year or two ago.

Mariotti's an asshet
And yes, his wiki was “savaged” by people calling him a moron a year ago, and ever since he’s been on a rampage against blogs—that is, until the Tribune fired him.

Please stop
watching Around the Horn (and for that matter Rome is Burning, PTI, First Take, etc.) for substantive analysis.
As a resident of the Chicagoland area, I am compelled to say that he doesn’t even know Chicago sports, let alone the Pac 10.
Please disregard everything he says, as it is uninformed bullshit. He is employed by the Chicago Sun Times and is a bigger douche than Rupert Murdoch himself.

PTI?
While Tony Kornheiser has an admitted east coast bias, Mike Wilbon more than calls him on it. I find PTI to be extremely entertaining. As for ATH though … and Rome is burning … and 1st and 10 or whatever it is now I’m with you. Although I do love fake news conferences staring Steve Philips.

Wilbon...
is what you said… an entertainer. That’s why I don’t think he offers much substance. While he is tolerable, my general opinion of the show is low. A lot of screaming and yelling. The only segment I like is five good minutes. And that’s when Kornheiser and Wilbon aren’t the focus.

I don't waste my time ...
with any of those shows. I actually I don’t waste my time with ESPN in general unless my Bruins are actually on the network or I have to go to their site to box scores or read specific takes that has something to do with UCLA or a UCLA angle on it. But I don’t waste my time with the talking clowns on WWL.

Jay Mariotti does not = MSM (MSM is not THAT bad)
There is not much to say about him, other than he would fit in perfectly at the Fishwrap.
For a former colleague’s thoughts on Jay, take a look at Roger Ebert’s open letter to Mariotti upon the latter’s departure from the Sun-Times.

Xavier coach Sean Miller turns down the Wildcats
i can’t find link yet, but I got the news texted to my phone by ESPN MVP. Pretty sad that the “standard” can’t get an Atlantic 10 coach

I saw that about 5 minutes ago on the web. Supposedly they’re now going after Utah’s coach. Arizona, self-named “The Standard”, being rejected by Floyd and Miller all in the same week, hahaha.

Calipari, Few, Dixon, Capel, Floyd, Pitino...now Miller
That’s seven rejections. I wouldn’t blame any school for reaching high, but you gotta wonder what the turn-off is. Rebuilding shouldn’t scare off anybody: all it takes is one good recruiting class and you’re rebuilt.
In theory, Arizona would be a great job. In theory, it’s near a recruiting hotbed from which it’s benefited all these years. You think maybe coaches are thinking that recruiting won’t be as easy anymore with Howland in L.A. (and, let’s admit it, to a lesser extent Floyd)?

Agree About Reaching High
I think it admirable that Arizona has chosen the risk of embarrassment over the risk of underachieving.
I wish we had done that with our football program before hiring CTS.
As much as we like to rag on Az, it is a program that could be turned around by a good coach, just as WSU was turned around. In the end, it is in the interest of the Pac 10 to have 10 strong, well coached teams that wreak havoc on the nation and give us an exciting conference season.
We will always be able to rag on Az. But, the fact that they are trying to improve the program is not something I can fault.
