Awesome Spotlight on Mason Finley (Discus) Incoming 2009
Been in Denver for 3 years now and don't hear a whole lot about UCLA out here... However, the Denver Post has been running a series highlighting Mason Finley, a 6'8", 330 pound discus star from a tiny town in Central Colorado. The Denver Post has called him the best HS Discus thrower in US history.
A few highlights, including his most recent feat...... It will be fun to follow this kid.
...Finley took official recruiting visits to Kansas, Arizona State, Texas A&M and Missouri before taking a look at UCLA. In Westwood, he was impressed with UCLA coach Art Venegas, also a renowned throwing coach. The huge and picturesque campus didn't intimidate the kid from tiny Salida.
At the Class 3A state meet in Pueblo in 2008, Finley's winning distance of 211-6 outdistanced his runner-up by more than 62 feet....
(Shotput) Finley's personal best is 71-3 1/4, at an April 20 meet in Gunnison. At the Class 3A state meet in 2008, Finley's winning throw of 64-9 1/4 was nearly 14 feet better than that of the runner-up.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

The NCAA might frown on that
He’s liable to decapitate someone with those numbers.

rb bruin took the words out of my mouth
Seriously, can we convince him to play football? There is no money in track and field. Jrue Holiday came to UCLA just so he can play in NBA.

Track & Field does pay a bit
Usain Bolt (record sprinter and gold medalist) reportedly is making nearly US$10million/year. All the top-level T&F stars (which Finley is destined to become) make a minimum of $1million when figuring in product endorsements, sponsor’s contracts, prize money and appearance fees. Lesser stars can still earn half a million. It’s not the NBA, MLB or NFL where hundreds of guys, even bench-warmers, make several millions, but the top 10 in each T&F event can live very comfortably. And unlike FB players, they can continue their careers into their mid-30s. So figure as an NFL running back making 4m for 4 years and done; or a top T&F guy making 2m/yr for 15 years. And having fun, traveling the world, being part of the Olympics, flirting with leggy Russian high jumpers at track meets in Rome, etc… It’s about quality of life. I say let Finley do his thing and be a T&F star.
Easy money and faithless women, red-eye whiskey for the pain...

You're right, Rich
And he needs an assistant. I volunteer to help with leggy Russian high jumpers. This would be leggy Russian high jumpers of the female persuasion. I’ll leave the male high jumpers to someone else. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

Don't forget Damien Thigpen
He ran a 36.75 in the 300m intermediate hurdles, which is the 2nd fastest in the nation. He is also nationally ranked in the 55m. I don’t know if he’ll run at UCLA or what events, but it sounds like he’s an explosive football player who can run track too. Hopefully he chooses to.
