Help Me Name My Kid
Yesterday, Mr. BB and I found out that we are expecting a boy in October. Since my gut had been telling me girl, I had more girl names picked out than boys, and my lead boy name (Matthew) does not seem to be on Mr. BB's list.
Therefore, why not have a little fun and take suggestions from my BN brothers and sisters. Who are your all-time favorite Bruins? Of course, there are some parameters:
1. In a perfect world, I would name my son after Mr. Aikman. However, we all know that his first name is about as anti-Bruin as you can get and Mr. BB refuses to have anything to do with the Dallas Cowboys.
2. We both have uncles named John, so it's out as a first name, but certainly in the running for the middle name (it was Mr. BB's grandfather's middle name and he was very close to him). Jack is also out as well.
3. Mr. BB would never hear of naming his son Cade, mostly because he played for the Bears (Mr. BB is a diehard Cheesehead) but there maybe some lingering jealousy that when we met, I told him I was going to marry Cade.
4. Aaron is also out because Mr. BB's sister is named Erin and I had an ex by that name.
5. Mr. BB is not crazy about William, so our son is probably not going to be named after Big Red.
So have some fun at our expense. I'm curious to see who you come up with, especially the Geezers.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Done and done
Especially since I already have a cousin named Steve. That’s our other problem. We both have large extended families and I really don’t want to repeat names, especially on my side.

Congrats BB!
Let me try to help.
I think you’ll have to leave out Petie and Timmeh. Orenthal James BB probably wouldn’t work, either.
Remember rhymes, and how Homer Simpson made sure “Bart” was OK: “Let’s see, Art, Bart, Cart, Dart, Eart …., yeah, Bart’s OK.”
If you did Kareem Abdul Jabbar BB, you’ld be covering two great Bruins.
Remember the need for a nickname. Seanny Rotten’s little boy is named Jake, which means he’s automatically “Jake the Snake” Rotten. Jake the Snake BB has a nice ring to it. Earl the Pearl BB would work. Stan the Man BB has already been pretty well sewn up by Musial. You could do “George Herman BB” and he would automatically become Babe BB. Many years ago, I was leaning toward "Theotis ‘Big Foot’ Fox, but that got vetoed.
You might think architecturally – Janss BB, or Royce BB, or something like that.
(Remember, play Mozart and put the speaker next to your tummy. That adds about 10% to the SAT scores.)
I can always count on you for good insight Fox
Peter was a name I was considering. Thank you for reminding me not to use it. Since Mr. BB’s name and grandfather’s name is Timothy, it might be used as a middle name.
I’m such a big Simpsons fan, I was actually going through characters’ names last night. I’m already calling the baby “my special little guy” which is what Marge calls Bart.
I don’t know if we have Mozart CDs, but we have been knows to play “Sons of Westwood” and “Mighty Bruins”.
Also, Mr. BB does not want to name his son Maurice.

Time to invest
In some Baby Einstein CD’s. Something about which I knew nothing, until becoming a daddy.
Oh, and Congrats!

Don't forget Baby +.
http://www.babyplus.com/ we SWEAR by this. Our son, Jacob Christopher ( we loved the name Jacob – Jake for short – and Christopher is his maternal grandfather), had this for about 16 weeks or so and he is absolutely the most alert baby you have ever seen and he sleeps really, really well with 0 trace of colic. I take it you already have children, so you already know about http://www.babyplus.com/ The Happiest Baby on the Block.
Is there any Irish in your lineage? Scott and Sean are two very strong names that aren’t over-used nowadays. My advice for the middle name is to name it after someone. My middle name is (no one ever believes this) Miguel. My Uncle’s name is Michael and my mom is Spanish so there you go.

Nope he's our first
But I did get the Happiest Baby book. It is written by a UCLA pedatrician.
Yes, my husband does have Irish blood, but I’m not crazy about Sean or Scott.

Hey, who set off the geezer alarm?
Big congratulations, BB. It’s comforting to know that another child will be brought into this world and nurtured in all the right ways.
If not for the hubby anti-Dallas thing, you could name him “Mr. Aikman,” just like that, and achieve your perfect world.
You could eschew the trend toward Travis, Justin, and Dylan, and go with unusual but venerated boys’ names:
Lewis
Gail
Rafer
Jackie
Or, how about eschewing all convention, à la George Costanza, and name him “13-9”?
along those lines...
…perhaps Luc or Luke? But my favorite BBall warrior is AA, so I would be partial to Aron.
Go Bruins.
Congrats!
I personally love the name Arthur for a boy. It sounds kingly and yet, “Art” and “Artie” are cute shortened versions of the name. And it’s not a common name, either.
Of course, Arthur Ashe is the Bruin connection.
Finally, “Arthur” happens to be one of the greatest comedies of all time.
Dear Sir:
Would you please talk to my wife? I think this is a good name for our 2nd boy, if/when he is born. I mean it’s also royal: King Arthur. His middle name would be Patrick (after my father) seeing as how our 1st son’s middle name is after her father.
My paternal grandfather (who died about 8 years before I was born) was named Arthur. I ALSO would like the name Arthur, but she thinks it’s too old-fashioned and there’s some goofy “Arthur the Aardvark” cartoon character so she wants to avoid schoolyard taunts. I empathize with avoiding schoolyard taunts, but it’s not like we would be naming him Hopper Jack or Pilot Inspektor or Apple.
by Seanny Rotten on May 16, 2009 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions
Good luck is my best advice
We had a girl so Arthur as a name was clearly not in play, but even if we had a boy, my wife just wasn’t going for it. She just didn’t like the name.
I understand trying to avoid the schoolyard taunts (although I’ve never heard of that particular cartoon character). But if he’s a good kid, and i"m sure he would be, then he would be able to handle it and someday, he would have a name befit for a king.
And another word for “old fashioned” is “classic.” Classic = good.
Congrats again!
There’s always Patrick. My sister swears she’s going to find Patrick Cowan and marry him. She has a month until she graduates, haha.
Patrick “13-9” BB.
Keeping it contemporary, there’s also Alfred, Josh or Darren.
Edward perhaps?
I had that same dream with Cade, Freesia. Four years on the same campus and I never saw him once! We would have been so perfect for each other :)
As Mrs. BB is a sorority sister of mine I will give a vote for the middle name of Wooden. If you don’t, I may one day! Oh, and Cade is so cute, because it sounds like our letters! Love it!
I started dreaming about Cade in high school
I remember telling my ex that I was going to marry him. I did meet him a couple of times through work, but I guess I wasn’t his type.
by bruinbabe2000 on May 19, 2009 9:16 AM PDT up reply actions
If you had a primo parking place, you would have been his type.
Sorry, BB and fellow Bruins, I just couldn’t resist.
I have a patient named Cade.
Both parents are Bruins. His mom calls him “Cader Tater.”

Congratulations!
Not quite a geezer and racked my brain a bit but here is my entry:
Darren Johnathan BB
Darren is obvious
Johnathan for your hubby’s grandfather and the greatest Tackle to ever put on the powder blue.
Congrats
Lew
Baron
Ed
Tyus
Drew (shout out to Maurice Drew and Drew Olson and Drew Gordon, and not Jrue),
Ben
Rick
Norm
Oh, and BOBO! Ok, maybe not.
And… how about Nestor?
Would also avoid
Macleod Bethel (too law-firmy)

First time caller...
long time listener, but I felt like I had to chime in on this subject. My wife and I are both UCLA graduates and wanted to come up with a way to add a little UCLA flavor to our son’s name. Our son’s middle name is Wooden in honor of Coach. Our son turns 4 in a few weeks and is already getting lessons on Coach’s teachings.
a school I taught at...
had a student named Boston and his younger brother: Bruin. Obviously not named in honor of UCLA, though. Though I bleed blue and gold, it still sounds strange to me as a first name. I like the suggestions incorporating Tyus or Drew.
Epic thread indeed
And of course I should have mentioned downthread as I did to bb offline … CONGRATS. Amazing news.
My suggestions
Ed Tyus BB
J.J. Barnes BB
Luc Arron BB
Arron Farmar BB
Luc Russell BB
Darren Luc BB
Red Wooden BB
I'm late to the game.
First of all congratulations! You are blessed BB with child, and I envy you the next 20 years of parenting.
I hate to do this to such a positive topic, but I have to add Ken and Henry to the names you cannot give your child. I’m sure we all know to which Persona Non Grata I am referring.
These have already been mentioned, so I’m just throwing in my support for names like:
Tyus (Edney)
Matt (and/or Barnes)
Pat (Cowan)
Ed or Charles (O’Bannon)
Cameron (Dollar) or even Cameroon (Yes, the country!)
Sydney (Wicks)
A coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment. John Wooden
A Better Idea?
How about naming him after two of UCLA’s iconic buildings? I suggest Royce Powell Bruinbabe.
CONGRATULATIONS, BB!
SO happy for you!
Ms. M and I went through a similar UCLA-themed debate for children’s names — although we ended up using her father’s middle name for son’s first name and my dad’s first name for son’s middle name.
I agree with portland re: possibly using a building name, as well. However, I would avoid:
Murphy (or else the kid will cost a fortune every year)
Schoenberg (too long for SAT forms)
Rolfe (too much like the Nazi-brainwashed stooge in Sound of Music)
Dickson (don’t give the other kids that kind of low-hanging fruit for insults)
Bunche (makes the kid sound heavy)
Anyway, you can always do:
(1) Luc Richard (obvious, but it works… future NBA defender)
(2) Benjamin John (CBH and Coach… future teacher, and no Benjamin is not for the oft-injured QB)
(3) Benjamin Royce (CBH and landmark… future president of Harvard Law Review)
(4) Alfred Royce (PAA and landmark… sounds like the ultimate butler)
(5) Edward Tyus (’95 Banner shoutout… flows well)
(6) Richard Tyus (CRN and Edney… odd, but works)
Congrats again!
M
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
I really like how Alfred Royce sounds together
Along with Benjamin Royce… hmm. I must file these name choices away.
Thanks to all of you
Mr. BB looked at this yesterday and was surprised at the response this got. We still have a long way to go, but right now the only name we seem to agree on is Jonathan, and it’s a nice bonus that one of the best athletes in UCLA history also has that name, but I can’t stress enough that we have a long way to go.
Oh, and we will share the picture of him dressed for his first football game, which will be sometime this October.
Congratulations!
I think Gary Beban BB has a nice rhythm to it.
Congrats to you both.
I’m weighing in late here, and it looks like all the appropriate choices have been advanced, so here’s my vote…
Jack Wooden BB, and call him Jackie.
greg in denver - UCLA guy for life
Congrats!
How about Terry Donahue? TD will always be a great initials combination. Disclaimer my first name is also Terry.
Frankie needs a beer!
Frankie (Hejduk). A lesser known Bruin, but the inspiration for the best chant in all of MLS.
I went to Columbus for the US-Mexico match
and I saw Frankie walking through downtown Columbus around midnight after the match, beer in hand. When he started singing for him he started dancing and took a bow.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on May 17, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions
I was totally lost when I first heard the chant
until someone showed me the clip of him chugging the beer while tailgating. Classic. I can imagine him braking out his Marley dance when you sang for him
Possible names...
Terrance is a pretty cool name that says I am man of sophistication.
If you wanted to go really exotic, Alterraun is there as well.
Really Late In
But gbruin hit it: Jack Wooden BB, and call him “Jackie” or “Woody.”
Or..John Alcindor BB.
Love My Bruins
Some other sports...
Doh! premature posting…..
As I was saying,
Karch
Sinjin
Jackie
Bob O. (Signholder #3)
No one had mentioned this one
Since you have a big family and you don’t want to have same name within your family, right? How about our great tennis player Jimmy Connor? I don’t mean to use his first name, but I mean his last name Connor as your baby’s first name!
let me volley a couple of names
Paul Nihipali (that dude was fun to watch play)
Karch Kiraly (you don’t hear of many Karch’s in the world)
Skip Hicks (Skippy?)
Troy Glaus (maybe not, but his last name is cool)
Eric Karros (one of my favorite Dodgers)
On a personal note, I just had my second child (a boy). We named him Luke. He’s our little prince.

Go Bruins!
Too funny
I should note that my wife is a KU grad and never understood why I was trying to spell his name Luc.
Also worthy to point out that Darth was a pretty cool guy. At the end of the day, he was the one who defeated the Emporer and saved the galaxy.

Go Bruins!
Anakin Skywalker fulfilled his destiny
I am a geek and I support this message.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
BB, I think you should go with Mr. BB Jr. Or Mr. BB with different middle name.
Unless you start it, you can’t create a tradition.
