The LAT finally does some solid reporting re: Mayo

Star-divide

Like Barnes2JJ said in a previous post, "yeah right, you bought that one?"

So, the trOJan Times finally decides to print an article on the subject and guess what they focus on?  A former player of timmeh's and his feelings about the week's events.  The focus is on how much the school does to make sure the players follow the rules and why the story should not be trusted.  They just spread their agenda through a former player.

I don't know why I keep saying "I can't believe it" about this sham of a paper.  If they had coverage like the rest of the country and then this one, then okay.  Their one sided and biased reporting continues and I can't wait to see what they report when the punishment comes in.

I will not include the link but here are some excerpts article (and while I didn't include the photo mentioned, I did leave in the photo credit where they make sure we understand their Penrose's position):

You've spoken on ESPN radio about Louis Johnson's allegation that Tim Floyd gave money to Rodney Guillory on Valentine's Day of 2007, and pointed out that it was a travel day for the basketball team. The team's itinerary indicates that practice at USC was in the early afternoon and the plane left a few hours later. With those parameters, a morning meeting seems feasible. Why don't you think it couldn't have happened on a travel day?

Coach Floyd is usually in the office around 6:30 a.m. just watching tape. There were times, especially my junior year (his first year), I'd get a workout in at 6 a.m. and I'd go through Heritage Hall to go to the locker room. I'd see the light on, I'd walk in, and Coach Floyd would be sitting there eating some food and watching tape at 7 in the morning. He was usually always there in the office, especially during the season, especially during Pac-10 play, with Coach [Phil] Johnson just watching film all day long. You never really saw him go anywhere during the daytime.

If [Louis Johnson] said this happened on a Tuesday at 9 o'clock in the evening, then I would have nothing to say. But he's not saying that. He's saying it happened in broad daylight in Beverly Hills, a place where he could be recognized. That's what doesn't make any sense.

Why else do you doubt the accusation?

He's saying it happened in Beverly Hills. If something like that were to go down, why would it be in Beverly Hills, which is right next to UCLA? I've seen Coach Howland walking up and down that street [Rodeo Drive] many, many times during the day. You have UCLA students walking down there all the time. Celebrities walk down that street. Paparazzi's all over the place. They would see Coach Floyd walking around. It would be pretty obvious. If you were going to do something like that, you wouldn't do it in a place where you could be recognized, you'd do it somewhere off the beaten path.

You also said that you saw Rodney Guillory and Louis Johnson around O.J. Mayo's dorm room. Didn't it strike you as odd to see these sorts of characters around?

Not really. Just about every recruit has someone like that, who's either an AAU coach, an uncle, or somebody who calls up the coach, gets a package of recruiting letters, gets recruiting going. Everyone has someone like that who's helping the recruiting process. I just thought these guys, from what I heard, they were advisors. They were the ones handling his recruiting and had all the contacts and were talking to all the coaches. What was a little weird is that they were always around the dorm room. Whenever I was at the dorms, I would see his car outside or something like that. I didn't know if he was a family member or what, but it didn't really strike me as odd because every recruit in the country has someone like that who's "advising" him on where he should go.

When the car was around, was Guillory there, too? Any thought cross your mind that maybe it was being used as O.J.'s car?

No. In fact whenever I saw O.J. get in, he would get into the back seat.

Guillory was apparently not allowed to get tickets from Floyd, per the administration. Were you, or anybody on the team that you know of, ever given any instructions about him?

Not at all. The first time I ever heard anything negative about Guillory was the ESPN Outside The Lines thing.

You didn't hear anything about earlier concerns with Guillory and Jeff Trepagnier?

No, I was shocked when I heard that. I would have thought that information would have been very clear before we even started recruiting O.J. I didn't hear anything about that until it came out last year ... I think it shocked me in a different way than it shocked other people. Usually when somebody brings in a player, you tend to hear if they've brought in somebody before.

What does USC's compliance office do to educate players about NCAA regulations?

Everything! It's a complete pain! They have so many lectures. They want to make sure that you know the rules. Before you can even practice with the team, you have to fill out almost two hours of paperwork, you have to go through a seminar, and they make you take a test. Throughout the season they'll have a compliance meeting where they'll play a game to help you learn information. They're always doing something to remind players and coaches about the rules. There are always fliers on the doors, posters in the locker room from the NCAA and USC compliance office, just always reminding players of the consequences of their actions if they do something against NCAA rules.

Have you noticed other measures that the school, specifically the compliance office, takes to prevent potential violations?

Not really. As a player, I just did all the paperwork. It seemed to get bigger and bigger every year. The two-hour compliance meeting turned into a two-and-a-half hour compliance meeting, which turned into a three-hour compliance meeting. The NCAA is always changing the rules and the compliance office wants to make sure the student-athletes understand the changes in the rules. Behind the scenes they probably make tweaks when a rule change happens that you or I would never really know.

A big school like USC, their compliance office is going to be on their game 24/7. They're going to make sure that they take all the necessary steps to make sure these kids are eligible and make sure the players and school won't get in trouble for any rule infractions.

Have you talked to Coach Floyd recently?

I haven't. I talked to him maybe a couple weeks ago, stepped into his office to say hi and talk to him about what he thinks about next year.

What else do you want people to know about this situation?

That it doesn't make sense. You have to look at the source. Look at the guy who's saying all this. This guy [Johnson] has provided no direct facts, no evidence ... We're taking the word of a guy who's leaching on to a 17- or -18-year-old kid, hoping to reap the benefits of O.J. Mayo playing in the NBA? Louis Johnson is like a guy whose girlfriend just left him for another guy. He's so [angry], he's trying to take down his girlfriend, ruin her reputation and the reputation of that guy she left him for. It's just a scorched earth policy. He's going down, and he's taking everybody down with him.

Another thing is that people are saying, "He wouldn't lie, he went to the feds." We've seen professional baseball players who have families, who have nice houses, cars, a lot of money -- they have a lot to lose -- who have lied in court. Louis Johnson? The guy has nothing to lose ... He can go out there and throw accusations in the air, not really caring what happens.

The questions were asked by Trojan shill, lapdog, asskisser, alum Adam Rose.

So is it now fair game

To tear down Penrose’s reputation? That seems to be the MO for the trOJan apologists, so here it comes:

I have no reason to believe any of what he says over Johnson. In fact I’m more inclined to believe Johnson because Johnson can go to prison for lying, and there’s really no consequences if Penrose lies. I also like the part at the beginning where they try to show that he’s objective if you leave out the minor details about him being a former player and writing for one of their recruiting websites. I’m sure it won’t reflect badly on his time at SUC as an athlete if sanctions and the death penalty befall the program. No, he clearly has no vested interest in helping the program he’s associated with avoid penalties and is completely objective. Yeah, sometimes Timmeh is in his office in the morning. Doesn’t answer the question at all and doesn’t prove that he couldn’t have been out handing Guillory the cash on any random day, but let’s pretend that it does. Then he freely admits that he conveniently wasn’t around when Deuce started allegedly pimping out his dorm room with flat screens.

Strolling down Rodeo Drive

Ok, did anyone else but me call bullshit on that one?

So, we go from “Beverly HIlls is right next to UCLA,” to “Coach Howland strolls up and down Rodeo Drive all day and all night long” (apparently looking for Julia Roberts) to “UCLA students spend their loan money at the thrift stores on Rodeo Drive” to “Floyd couldn’t possibly have been on Rodeo Drive handing someone a thousand bucks because he certainly would have been recognized.”

Um, pardon me, but who ever said the money drop happened on Rodeo? I believe the original report indicated that it happened in the City of Beverly HIlls in front of a cafe. No street was ever mentioned, and certainly not Rodeo Drive. And Beverly HIlls is not as small as or as teeming with papparazzi as Penrose suggests. Yes, the paps hang around Il Sole and the Ivy and probably a few of the shops on Rodeo. But there are miles and miles in BH where no papparazzi lurk—-and frankly, they wouldn’t recognize Floyd or take his picture or give two craps about him anyway, unless he had Britney Spears on his arm.

This might be a small point but this kind of argument is classic bob and weave deflection (i.e., bullshit).

Keep your eye on the ball, sportsfans. This ain’t over yet.

It's the

Floyd isn’t so stupid as to do it out in the open in Beverly Hills defense.”

Always a classic. You see, if you are familiar with all of the proper ways to lie and cheat, you know that it doesn’t make sense to lie and cheat out in the open where everyone can see you. You guys just don’t cheat enough to understand.

Funny stuff
We’re taking the word of a guy who’s leaching on to a 17- or -18-year-old kid, hoping to reap the benefits of O.J. Mayo playing in the NBA? Louis Johnson is like a guy whose girlfriend just left him for another guy. He’s going down, and he’s taking everybody down with him.

It’s amazing how desperate they are to discredit him. If you’ve read what Penrose has written on other boards, everything is about how he’s an ex-con, he’s going back to jail, his girlfriend left him, he’s desperate for money, etc. He just trashes Johnson left and right.

and now they have turned the LAT into a Trojan message board.

Let the people speak

How about those hard hitting letters to the editor today? Wow. Back off L.A. Times, you don’t want to appear biased against Cal Southern.

A total of 3 letters, and one of them was likely serious when he suggested that USC* should go ahead and pay athletes because the NCAA won’t do anything about it anyway.

by Karl II on May 16, 2009 5:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Should also mention

Penrose complained about contacting the media and having nobody listen because they were just too biased to get both sides of the story.

As he said, “This entire thing is comical.”

No Firsthand Knowledge of the Situation

Is it just me, but why on earth interview someone with no firsthand knowledge of the situation? Just because the guy went to $UC and played basketball doesn’t mean he knows anything about the alleged meeting and payoff. They could have interviewed anybody on campus and gotten the same worthless opinions.

…And the comments about Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive are laughable.

u$c* fans defending their tainted programs

go beyond being simple apologists. At this point in time they are engaged in a very active and illogical form of denial. It is not so humorous to see, because I think that some of them have a brain and can tell the difference between bullshit and credible allegations.

So here are those facts that I see are incontrovertible:

  1. In the capacity we are speaking, the difference between a booster and an agent is a small one
  2. Even “scumbags” tell the truth on occasion (especially under oath)
  3. When multiple sources, on differing aspects, continuously point out that something is bad, chances are something bad has gone on

Remember, Guillory was popped once before and u$c* did business with him AGAIN! This fact stands out in clear contradiction to anything an apologist can say. The scheme was noticed by Doyle seemingly before anyone else connected the dots (and much to the SHAME of our local shit-rag paper). Now Doyle is “out to get u$c*” because he did a little of what the LA Times couldn’t: Actual reporting.

Another thing that seems odd to me is that Johnson, who’s motive for bringing all this up is a supposed book deal and who’s reason for lying is “getting back at Mayo,” is saying what he is saying. We don’t know what actually transpired to make the Feds question him again but one thinks that if you lie and it is proven, a) you go to jail for perjury, and b) your book deal gets canceled because you lack all credibility.

So I ask the Trojay active denyers, how can both motives exist at the same time?

If Floyd is somewhere where there is paparazzi,

they’re probably paying attention to the celebrities in the area. Even in Los Angeles Tim Floyd isn’t a celebrity worth photographing. I can’t ever recall seeing him on the cover of the tabloids as I check out at the grocery store. No one cares what miracle diet he used to lose 20 lbs in a week (fwiw it consisted largely of 30 minutes a day pitching a fit while yelling at a mannequin dressed as a referee.) The only rag that uses his picture is the local fishwrap. I’d think he’d be relatively anonymous at any of the major hot spots in Beverly Hills.

by TrueBlueBlood on May 16, 2009 7:33 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Also, the morning would be the perfect time to avoid the paparazzi

Nobody’s getting up before 11 am in Bev Hills/Hollywood, anyway. Maybe there would be one or two photographers out and about hoping to catch Kate Beckinsale on her way out to Starbucks or Jessica Biel walking her dog. But other than that, the streets would be pretty dead.

by insomniacslounge on May 16, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Insomniac's right

There are no stars out at 11am is because Beverly Hills so crammed with UCLA students saying hi to CBH on their way to class.

The only bigger idiot than this “former player” is Rose for trying to pass this off as reporting.

lives in a strange made-up world—one which he relies on in his reporting—where everyone who goes to u$c* is a “trust-fund baby” and Beverly Hills is populated with UCLA students at all hours. Where CBH can be seen stalking the streets every hour of every day.

Oh course this guy Penrose isn’t biased, he only went to school there and was part of the program and was coached by Floyd. That’s enough for me, case closed.

by Bruins102NCAA on May 16, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol

Yeah that’s what is so funny about this. Tim Floyd is an average looking dude who coaches a team that can barely muster 5,000 a game in a brand new arena. And this guy is supposed to be recognized by paparazzi?

by Nestor on May 17, 2009 8:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the best the 'wrap could do.

Apparently no one knows how to get in touch with Timmeh or Garrett. Apparently no one knows how to formulate the question to Timmeh: “Did you give any money to Johnson?” Or to Garrett: “Did Timmeh give any money to Johnson?” Those seem to be simple enough questions. Those should have been asked the instant the story was reported by the fishwrap’s investigative reporters. Oh, wait. Well, it should have been asked after the fishwrap’s investigative reporters learned of the story.

But the wrap couldn’t get in touch with anyone in the upper echelons of the athletic department at Inheritance Hall. So they sent the president of the trOJan Fan Club to interview the president of the Timmeh Fan Club. That’s sure to get to the bottom of things. Anyway, the interview was captured on camera. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc&feature=related

Not to beat a dead (Trojan) horse

but I never saw this article/interview posted by uclafan11 actually in the LAT’s print edition. I assume it only made it onto the online edition of the LAT. If I missed it, my apologies.

One point: There will come a day, in a very short time, when the LAT and most other print newspapers will be gone. The hacks at the Times whine incessantly that print journalists are sorely needed so that they can (continue to) be the whistleblowers of scandal in our society.

Uh-huh. The LAT didn’t break this story. Yahoo! Sports (which, to my knowledge, doesn’t appear in print) broke this story and the other good ones about the alleged $candals across time.

And here it is Sunday, and still no word in the LAT about Payogate. No follow-up and not a mention. Nothing from Slimers, Plaschke or the rest of the crew. Not. One. Word. You don’t think Slimers would have dropped a few lame jokes at UCLA’s expense if CRN or CBH had allegedly paid a thousand bucks in full frontal view of the paparazzi at Spago’s on a Friday night? That IS what happened, right? Oh wait, Spago’s is not on Rodeo Drive. It couldn’t have happened there.

Well done, Times. Keep up that awesome whistleblowing, guys. No wonder you’re all going the way of the dodo and dinosaur.

some deeper investigation

so I thought I would take a look into this whole “ben howland loves to spend his free time in Beverly Hills” business.
We all know coach BH is getting about 2 million a year from UCLA (he deserves every penny, if not more). We certainly cannot rule out the fact that BH may have a little extra cash to spare on Rodeo Drive to buy some spiffy suits. I mean there are plenty of college coaches who pay strict attention to style.
Perhaps coach BH is an up and coming Rick Pitino?

I was still a bit skeptical.
My suspicions were confirmed by paying a visit to collegeinsider.com.

I will say this about Keating, one of his suits cost more money than his former mentor Ben Howland’s entire wardrobe.

There you have it folks. Either BH is getting some amazing deals on formal wear or maybe he just realizes that suits really don’t make a basketball program. Thankfully coach BH has been spending more time actually coaching and recruiting, than getting his shop on at Rodeo Drive and stocking up on Armani.

by bruinbasketball on May 19, 2009 12:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Possible explanation

“I will say this about Keating, one of his suits cost more money than his former mentor Ben Howland’s entire wardrobe.” Maybe Coach Howland spends so little on his wardrobe because he has a Sickel Cell Foundation credit card. You never have to pay the bill on those.

On second thought, I doubt it. There was only one of those cards.
