Around SBN: Tottenham's Plans for Northumberland Stadium Approved

Dohn posts an excellent letter from former chair (and now major critic) of the project and UCLA's response. Read these documents if you want to understand the issues surrounding this project.

This is extremely disturbing

If Bergman is correct, they did not fully investigate the possibility of a new arena. That’s a major, major mistake and it doesn’t seem as if the committee truly addressed the concerns Bergman had. The cost is ridiculous for what we’re having done. The more I read, the more I think we’re messing this whole thing up.

I LIKE Alternate Scheme 2

This is like what I had in mind when I mentioned earlier about bringing in the west end and reclaiming the space, rather than any westward expansion that would end up abutting the Acosta Ctr.

My biggest problem with “centering” plans that only call for making the baseline bleachers extend further toward the court with a lower rise is that they leave the 200 and 300 baselines just as far removed from the game.

Oops

After further review, I see it calls for bringing in the EAST end, but the same comments apply re: bringing all the seating closer rather than just the arena level.

None of the options bring the endzones closer to the court

For me, that implies that to do so would be lengthy, complicated, and/or expensive.

Don't kid yourself, UCLA administration: $185 M = at least $230 M

Let us not forget history. Some great sage said “Those who forget history are doomed to screw the pooch yet again,” or something like that. How’s the hospital construction going? Was that finished on time? How much over budget is it now? Here’s what Wikipedia says: "On June 29, 2008, the new Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center opened and became fully-operational, replacing the older facilities across the street. … Originally budgeted at $598 million in 1998, construction began in 1999 with a completion date of 2004. Cost overruns and construction delays attributed to rising construction costs and design changes due to medical advances resulted in the price of the building increasing to $829 million. (Emphasis added.) So the med center is 5 years late, and 39% over budget. I wonder if the same UCLA administrator who blew off Mr. Bergman gave his absolute assurance that the hospital would be completed on time and on budget.

This project won’t be built by the UCLA Engineering Department out of a spirit of love. It will be built by a general contractor who is likely to make a low-ball bid, then depend on change orders to make a profit. I believe the CEO of the contractor on the med center was described by UCLA Alum Mayor Tom Bradley as the “Change Order King.”

Conservatively, if this project is 25% over budget, it will cost $230M, not $185 M. Bear in mind that 25% is a conservative number. The overbudget percentage on the med center is closer to 39%. IIf it’s 39% over budget, it will be $257 M.) Bruins, if you think this project will be completed for $185 M, and will be completed on time, you’re being hopelessly naive.

The academic admin-speak in the response from the university seems to me to be typical of the educational bureaucracy. I’m embarrassed, frankly. This sort of thinking is anthetical to the ideals of UCLA. There is supposed to be a free and open exchange of ideas. The well-structured argument by Mr. Bergman is simply blown off in a terse reply which simply rejects the basic premises of the Bergman argument without supplying the key word – BECAUSE. There is no “Mr. Bergman, your ideas stink because….” They simply treat him like an incoming freshman objecting to the amount of time it takes to register. Shame on you, UCLA administration. Your position sounds very smug, just like you got it from three wealthy and influential alumni. I suspect, however, that you won’t get too many alumni, wealthy or not, to agree to fund this thing.

Pauley Pavilion started off as a sleek new beast, with muscles which rippled as it strode purposefully across the campus and the nation. Now, that beast is old and decrepit, and looks more and more like a pig. We can get a new beast, or we can put lipstick on our pig. It’s up to you, UCLA administration. If you want me to contribute the pittance I can afford, don’t aske me to buy lipstick. If you do, you can count me out.

None too pleased

I was originally on the fence, but have read more and seen the costs for other arenas. $200M for a renovation is absolutely usurious. Particularly if they did not do their due diligence for a new arena. Would it have killed them to look into a design that looks like Pauley on the outside but is completely new on the inside? I like the idea of the bricks on the outside, to fit with the rest of campus…but there are no brick buildings around Pauley! The seating plan just doesn’t do it for me. It’s just a little band aid job. Frankly I don’t understand how this project can cost $200M. It’s ridiculous.

As someone commented on Dohn’s blog, this “renovation” seems to bring Pauley from the 60’s to the 80’s…and the insignificant donation that I was going to make shall now go to diapers instead.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Wow

I never really realized how inadequate Pauley has become until reading that. Know it is clear why Athletics went through five different firms. It seems clear that they had their heart set on keeping the original Pauley, and every firm told them otherwise until NBBJ, who’s plan looks to be nothing more than lipstick on a pig.

I am now in favor of starting from scratch and building a new arena somewhere else on campus. A multi-purpose venue is still needed for gymnastics, concerts, graduation, etc. so Pauley can remain as is, but a good basketball arena just does not mesh with Pauley’s design. Go into Westwood, go to the old Med Center, go to the dilapidated area behind the dorms at Sunset and Veteran, hell just go somewhere and build an intimate basketball only arena with proper amenities and facilities. Otherwise, just do nothing and save the 185+ million dollars that they are about to throw away.

Michael Hallmark's Analysis

of the NBBJ plan is especially damning. To go forward with the existing plan when superior, more cost-effective alternatives have already been proposed would be unconscionable. I have no problem renovating the current structure (my preference would also be Alternate Scheme 2), but if we go that route, let’s at least do it right.

Do the UC Regents have the final say on this?

For those who want to speak up against current Pauley plans

Simple suggestions:

Lay out your arguments.

Blog about it. We have fanposts here on BN that allows you to do just that.

If you are that passionate about it, then hit at this topic relentlessly. Challenge the Morgan Center and UCLA officials to engage in debate with fact based analysis. We did this during the Dorrell era. We know it works.

It is up to the people who feel passionate about it to take leadership and charge online. You can start right here on BN. Message board style rants will probably won’t do much.

Where is the Student Body on this?

This is a real question, not rhetorical. Do the students care? When I was a freshman or sophomore (anyway, a long, long time ago), student apathy cost us an on-campus football stadium. It’s time for the students to make their voices heard on this. And if they don’t care, then that sends a message, too.
