Bruins lose T&F and Gauntlet

In a disastrous day for our Bruins, both Men's and Women's Track teams were upset by the Trojans. Had we won both (which, on paper, we really should have), we would have won the Gauntlet.
Woulda, shoulda, coulda, I know, but this hurts a lot, and just should never happen (read Dohn's trojie counterpart for the reasons why).

The silver lining is that the men's track team should be a lot, lot better next year with the footballers like Carroll, Thigpen, Savage (redshirting track this season) and a couple others. We've also got the nation's #1 recruit (national record in the Discus) coming in and Moopark sprinter Max Dyce (yesterday ran 10.37w). We'll also have our star hurdler, Craddock, back for his senior season (redshirting this year due to nagging injury or something and prep for US nationals).

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Who won it last year?

is this the first time someone has won the Gauntlet two years running?

yes it is

This is the first year that the Gauntlet has not alternated between the schools.

Really bad luck, mostly

For me, it’s almost like the Len Bias effect. Nearly all of our A-list, blue-chip, can’t-miss recruits have had issues. In men’s track, the NCAA-mandated maximum is 12.6 scholies. When we focus all our recruiting energy on a guy and give him a full ride, it is extremely valuable, and a big risk if the guy doesn’t perform.

A couple years ago, we had the consensus #1 recruiting class with 2 hurdlers and 3 throwers (including Savage), who were all HS record-breakers. Of that class, the 2 hurdlers are gone (Klech in the 400h, didn’t fit in and transferred to Oregon, Reed in the 110H, was/is academically ineligible—tiny possibility he can come back.) Savage was hurt in FB and is not throwing DT or SP this spring (redshirt). All three of those guys would’ve won their respective events with ease against the Trojies and we’d have won the team battle. Another superstar on full ride but not competing is Craddock (110H), he’s had some nagging injuries and is redshirting this spring. A few other highly touted recruits have performed okay, but are not having the kind of success that is going to get them, or the team, into the NCAA top 5.

As crazy as it sounds with all the personnel and events, Track is like hoops in that it can make a radical difference to have just 2 or 3 superstars (usually the difference between a .500 team and Final 4 team). For one reason or another over the last few years, those stars have fallen by the wayside, and what we’re left with is a bunch of solid role players.

Finally, I’ve also wondered if the whole vibe at the track during practice and meets is just a bit too low-key. I know all that rah rah stuff is “soooo HS, bro” but there just doesn’t seem enough urgency/intensity as you see 24-7 with Howland, et al. That’s something that is also needed.

The good news is we’ve got (arguably) the #1 recruiting class coming in as I mentioned in the original post. My hope is that they can stay healthy and focused when they get to Westwood.

A couple of articles about 2006's No.1 class

This one from the official site:

This excerpt (bold is mine) from “the bible of the sport” Track & Field News:
Rating The Recruiting Classes

UCLA men claim top-haul honors

MEN
1. UCLA
The Bruins have long been a collegiate track power, but since we started these recruiting-ratings in the fall of ’95, this is their first win. Art Venegas’s incredible crop: Hurdler/jumper David Klech was the biggest prize, with his 13.69/50.35/7-3/4/23-9 1/2 (24-7 3/4w) talents.

Klech will have hurdle competition from No. 1 All-America Darius Reed (13.47/37.01). But what about the weights—Venegas’s true passion—where the UCLAns picked off Nos. 1-2-3 in the discus in Darius Savage (66-3/212-1), Bo Taylor (63-11 1/4/213-7) and Nick Robinson (65-1/197-0). Plus 4 vaulters at 16-5 or higher. A juggernaut in the making?

Rich

do you have any connection to the program as a former athlete, the parent of an athlete, etc. or are you just a big fan? Either way, thanks for the insight. Hopefully we can pick it up the rest of the way.

No real connection...

Just a big fan of track, and UCLA track especially. When I was at school, my p-t job was working in the sports information office and I became acquainted with a lot of Bruin sports stars like Aikman, Pooh, Reggie, Gaston, as well as the track stars of that period, who were winning national championships and would later win Olympic Gold medals (Everett, Lewis, Young, Marsh…). I started doing triathlons while at UCLA, and I would sometimes go out to Drake and “work out” side by side with the track team (I’m pretty sure students can’t do that anymore). But, no connection to anybody there now; just keenly observing from afar.

That's awesome

Thanks for the updates and whenever you can stop by and let us know what’s going on, it’d be great.
