Shawn Johnson a future Bruin?

Shawn Johnson is an Olympic gold medalist in women's gymnastics.  She is the new champion of Dancing with the Stars.  She could do books; she could do movies; she could even sing on American Idol (but won't).

For a young lady who many would say has everything, what might be missing on her resume?  She tells an interviewer that she's "always wanted to go to Stanford or UCLA."  Smart, competitive, excellent as both individual and team performer, she seems like a fine future Bruin.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I don't see why not.

and is she really a gold medalist? Thought she got silver. But I didn’t watch the Olympics

Yes, she won the gold medal on the balance beam

She’s also the reigning world champion, current national champion (back-to-back national titles), and the Sullivan Award winner (considered the Oscar of the sports world) . The Sullivan award is given to the nation’s top amateur athlete of the year and Shawn was the first ever female gymnast to receive the award. She’s quite an an accomplished young lady.

Ballroom Dancing? Shouldn't she go to sc?

Just joking.

She seems like a great kid — the kind of person we want to be a Bruin.

Second that

She seems to have a very good head on her shoulders, always very humble. Her parents are very supportive of her choices, but know when to let her have the spotlight.

But what freshman guy is going to ask her to a dance?

There’s a bit of an intimidation factor there, it would seem.

I agree she seems like a nice kid. Hmm. Why am I not surprised when another character kid wants to go to UCLA?

Sorry Fox;

1) With legs that that, I’m sure someone would ask her out.
2) There aren’t any ice-cream social/dances at college anymore :-)

What is this - University of California at Footloose?

No dancing on campus? Where is Kevin Bacon when we need him?

Back in the days when we couldn’t leave our connestoga wagons parked on Landfair on Tuesdays, we still had beer busts and exchanges and formal dances from time to time. (OK, wise guys – go ahead with the comments about the Lindy Hop and all that.) Someone will rouse up his courage, though, and ask her out, I’m sure. But he had better be a pretty good dancer.

Another olympic gymnast,

Samantha Pesczk, has committed to the Bruins for 2010-11.

I remember reading about Sam committing

Having two Olympic gymnasts on the UCLA’s team would be something!

I don't think Shawn is eligible

I’m pretty sure she’s considered professional because of endorsement deals. It’s too bad.

Forgot about that....

Then perhaps she can still help out the team as an undergraduate assistant coach or something. I think other elite gymnasts have taken the same types of roles before.

by tngal on May 27, 2009 11:18 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah that's what I was wondering

but it would still be great for the school and bring lots of attention that could help with recruiting

She said she is undecided about competing in the 2012 Olympics

But she would have the facilities at UCLA to train should she decide to give it another shot.

I can’t watch the video at work, but that first line is so wrong in so many ways…

Wrong in MANY ways indeed...

The guy who came up with that ad must be the same guy who came up with Carson Palmer’s hot dog ad. Somewhere, he is laughing his ass off.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
