UC Merced names student-athlete award after Bruin Cobi Jones

UC Merced could not have selected a better individual in my biased eyes to name their award after. Cobi was an example of what a student athlete should be. His classiness on and off the pitch is something that has always made me proud he is a Bruin.

Cobi Jones has been one of my favorite Bruins since I first saw him play soccer back in the 90s (Was it the 94 WC? Maybe). A great and well-deserved honor.

Cobi Jones

Hung around my dorms the summer before I entered UCLA (did a pre-freshman summer program in 91 because I couldn’t wait to go to school before everyone else and check out fall camp).

He was a great player and a better kid. Just an all around nice guy.

Class act

What a great and deserved honor for Cobi! His story serves as an inspiration to many soccer players. He walked on at UCLA, kept practicing and performing until he was finally brought onto the Olympic team and US National Team, and ended up winning more caps (each game played for the national team = one “cap”) than any other player in American history.

Since I went to the same schools as he did, by a couple years removed, and played on some of the same soccer teams as he did, I can say first-hand that Cobi has been a classy guy and a role model for his classmates and for thousands of soccer fans. He is the kind of person who makes fellow Bruins proud!
