Holy Moly! Bruin Football Recruit Randall Carroll Runs Fastest In 17 yrs!
Bumped. GO BRUINS. -N
UCLA-bound football/track star Randall Carroll sprinted to one of the fastest times in California history yesterday at his school's league meet. Oh, this is going to be fun when he's running wild in Westwood (and Pasadena).
From DyeStatCal.com, "the Internet Home for California High School Track, Field & Cross Country":
Hold on to your hats, everyone -- the level of California male sprinting has just been torqued up a few notches! Cathedral High senior Randall Carroll blasted down the straightaway to record the fastest legal 100-meter time in California in 17 years last night, roaring to a wind-legal 10.30 seconds, the fastest time in the nation this year, at the Del Rey League Finals at Serra High.
One of the guys he's chasing is former Bruin and NCAA champ Henry Thomas:
Carroll, the defending state 100m and 200m champion, relied on a strong getaway and controlled speed before reportedly easing slightly the last 10 meters. The wind was measured at +1.7 meters per second. Carroll's time was the third-fastest wind legal mark in state history, trailing only the state record 10.25 achieved by Henry "The Heat" Thomas of Hawthorne way back in 1985 and the 10.29 effort by Compton's Ricky Carrigan in 1991.
If you're in SoCal, you can watch him run, possibly faster, over the next couple weeks. Most of these great track meets are either free entry or charge like a nominal fee of $1.25 or something.
He's not thinking football (he's signed to UCLA as a running back) right now. He's focused on track." The coach also mentioned that Carroll's best remaining shot for a fast time at a Southern California venue would be at CIF-SS Finals at Cerritos College (in Norwalk) on May 23rd, mostly because of the afternoon hours and the greater chance for accompanying warm weather. At the Southern Section Masters Meet (Friday night, May 29th also at Cerritos College), the cool weather typically hinders sprint times.
The State Meet is in Clovis (central California) on June 5 and 6.

Good News, indeed.
Is it a sure thing he will dual sport in Football and Track? I certainly hope so, Track & Field being one of our points of pride for so many years, I love the idea that he should compete in both.

How can anyone be so sure about those times?
Isn’t it basically just a blur going down the track? I suppose with a high speed camera or something like that. Anyway, Carroll will probably stay 17 forever due to the effect of relativity as one approaches the speed of light.

Electronic timing
The starting gun is connected to a computer, which is connected to the starting blocks and a photo-finish camera. It’s standard equipment, even at small HS meets. They also have wind gauges and anything under 2.0 meters/sec is a “legal” time. That’s why the Dyestat writer was kept referring to “legal” time…

10.3 is FAST
I played against a high 10.3 in JC (he must have had REALLY bad grades!)… he was a running back. He ran all over our defense for most of the night. You had to really break down and make him dance and just try to get him to stand still long enough for the rest of the defense to swarm him. Trying to tackle him in the open field was a lost cause. I can’t imagine what Carroll must have been doing against High School defenses. I hope he can catch.

2012????
Help me out, those who know track… is this the type of speed that could make a run at London in 2012? It seems like he has unusual speed. I understand that he has about a half second to make up to challenge Bolt, but he’s only 17, so it might be possible? I also heard that Eric Crouch (former Nebraska Heisman QB) ran a 10 second 100 meter at a Notre Dame football camp in high school, but he was far from an Olympic sprinter. Could be that his time was exaggerated though.
Thanks for the post rich87.

This could give you an idea
The times on the left are their best High School marks, also includes the year they did it and their later accomplishments.
10.30 .. Randall Carroll, 2009 …. ???
10.36 .. Justin Gatlin (Woodham, Pensacola, 2001) 9.77 broke AR, tied WR, double world champion gold medalist (but got dinged for testosterone and records annulled)
10.46 .. Tyson Gay (Lafayette, Lexington, Ky, 2002) Double World Champion, Broke American record, 9.77, at US Trials, injured in Olympics
10.28 .. Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fl, 2004) NCAA champ, Olympic Bronze medal 100m, 200m
10.46 .. Travis Padgett (Crest, Shelby, NC, 2005) Made the Olympic team on the 4×100 relay
10.47 .. Lashawn Merritt (Wilson, Portsmouth, Va, 2004) Olympic Gold medal in 400m
10.56 .. Nesta Carter JAMAICA (2003) Olympic Gold medal World Record holder as member of Jamaica’s 4×100 relay
10.30 .. Randall Carroll, 2009 …. ???
2012 might be too soon, as a lot of elite sprinters are at the top of their game around age 23 to 27. Also, keep in mind, when looking back at some of the high schoolers’ times, there are literally dozens that ran in the 10.3, 10.4 range that never amounted to anything. Also, Carroll has the most important races of his HS career coming up over the next few weeks, so he could significantly improve. He already has the qualifying time to enter the US Trials this year and if he gets his time down to 10.21, would meet the requirements for the World Championships (this year in Berlin) A standard.

Dentarious Locke
He just won the Florida HS 100 meters in 10.32. I watched him play football for Chamberlain HS against the eventual state champs, and he had two LONG runs for TD’s. I’ve never seen anyone faster. But his 10.32 would have finished second to Carroll. Let’s hope he has even a modicum of skill at football.
Locke is going to Tennessee, so we’ll get a chance to see him.

Oops
The “he” is Carroll, of course. I’m confident our coaching staff can get him the ball where he can do some damage.

Dentarius Locke is nearly 20 y.o.
For whatever reason he’s a really “old” high schooler. He’s got almost 2 years more maturity than Carroll. Plus, as you point out, he would’ve finished 2nd to Randall and that was Locke’s state meet. Carroll still has a few more big meets this season to drop even lower.
Hopefully, someone will get them both to run at the Nike Nationals or Golden West invitationals after the season.

ask and you shall receive...
Wow! Thanks, great stuff. It looks like he has potential, but needs to mature the proper way physically to reach Olympic speed. Can’t wait to see him run at Drake. Please keep us posted as to how he fares in his upcoming races rich87.

What Joyous News!
Speed is good, speed kills defenses. IMHO, it also makes football more fun to watch.
Wheels Carroll is ours…thanks CRN!

When's the last time this occurred??
This is the current list of the top 3 sprinters in California at the moment (this could change as the divisional, section and state meets heat up over the next few weeks). BUT do you know what they all have in common? They will all be brother BRUINS in a couple of months! Word-friggin-class speed is on its way to Westwood.
California High School leaders
Men’s 100 Meters
Rank Mark
1 10.30 Randall Carroll 12 Cathedral
2 10.51 Maxwell Dyce 12 Moorpark
3 10.60 Sheldon Price 12 Bishop Amat
