Responding to Cal alum
Hey everybody,
I'm studying for the CA bar exam in July, and in my bar review class there is this smug Cal alum that always tries to let me know that Cal is better than UCLA at everything. I'm tired of hearing his stupid "satellite school" jokes and would like to respond with something better than "Cal sucks," but I don't have the time to do some thorough research into Cal to get this guy to shut his trap, because of the damn bar exam.
This guy was on Cal's rally committee (which he makes sure to reminds me about it every time we talk) and a requirement of being on Cal's rally committee was that members had to know about UCLA so that they can talk trash about UCLA.
One thing that I did mention to him that got under his skin was about certain football players that got into Cal but could not get into UCLA, but I could not remember the name of the player(s). Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Also: Marshawn Lynch.
Both wanted to play for UCLA but could not get it.

Why don’t you mention that UCLA is more selective than Berkeley? Plenty of friends I have at Berkeley did not get into UCLA and I just graduated.

You could always ask him about Cal's last appearance in the Rose Bowl ...
That would be 1959 (half a century!)
Or you could ask him the last time they actually won a Rose Bowl ….
That would be 1938.
Or you might even ask him their overall record in the Rose Bowl …
That would be a far from stellar 2-5-1.
And if he doesn’t want to concentrate solely on football, you can always ask how many National Championships Cal has won, but I don’t think he’ll want to go there either.
For some reason, which is beyond me, Cal alums seems to have a big chip on their shoulder when it comes to anything UCLA. I think it is quite simply green-eyed envy. UCLA has surpassed Cal in almost all endeavors and, like a jealous elder sibling, they just can’t handle it.

cal's "great" history
They have I think 29 NCAA Championships (I couldn’t find the link) or so, or something like that. Essentially our amount is about 3-4 times as much as theirs. Also, the admission rate for UCLA this decade has been slightly lower than theirs. On a side note, as I was typing this, my friend from Cal called me, how ironic.

Let him know that while he has to learn all about UCLA
we here could care less about Cal. We may be their rivals, but they are not good enough athletically to be our’s (and I’m not just talking football and basketball). That’s what $C is for. He should be focusing on the Furd and their 90 something NCAA championships

As much as we love our Cal brethren ...
They sure are pre-occupied with us aren’t they?
Here are some of my favorite lines:
- For a school with a 50 year head start, we aren’t impressed.
- The key difference between the two schools is Cal aspires to be like other schools. UCLA only aspires to be itself. (This usually results in some less-than-smart response, to which you can respond – “Wikipedia the names of the school colors if you don’t believe me.”

Ignore him
Let him preoccupy himself with “tormenting” you about how Cal is superior. While he’s busy focusing on that, you’ll be doing the work needed to pass the bar.
When he fails and you pass, you can just tell him it’s okay, you’re still looking for a secretary if he needs a job.

Better Yet
Tell that Cal Bear jerk maybe someday, when he does pass bar exam, you wouldn’t mind letting him clerk for you at your law firm downtown.
Seriously, Berkeley’s law school dean herself, some lady from the east coast, flunked California’s bar exam on her first try too. Not that she needed the license to practice here in California since she is already licensed in New York, but the idea that a law school dean inexplicably flunking it in a state where she runs the law program of a major university opens everyone’s eyes.

Actually
That was the dean of Stanford Law who failed the California Bar Exam.
Boalt’s current dean is actually pretty distinguished and well-connected (as in one of his former students at Harvard Law, where he once taught, is the current President of the United States).
But, if it makes you feel better, Boalt’s former dean got caught up in a scandal over allegations he raped a student.

Thanks for the input
To this day, it still baffles me to think that a Law School Dean from such a reputable, not to say internationally renowned institution of higher education would ever flunk a bar exam. How did he or she ever become Dean of a Law School in the first place ? Mind boggling indeed.
And then this other Dean too. It’s truly amazing how someone of his stature, legal background could have involved himself in such tawdry situations.
Well, these are ammos our friend can use to rebuke that Cal Bear jerk that got on his nerve.
by Htse005 on Jun 16, 2009 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
How can a Dean flunk the bar?
Well, for one, the bar is hard. It’s reasonably likely that this Dean person didn’t take the bar immediately after law school and a bar review course. I think trying to take the bar years after graduation and without a bar review course is very risky, and suggests that this person might not be Deanular material in the first place.
I got a perfect score on the California Bar in 1974. (You don’t get your score if you pass, only if you fail, so everyone who passes naturally assumes his or her score was perfect.) I have no illusions about how I would fare on the bar exam today. It would be interesting to see if I could pass any state’s bar exam. I think it’s about as likely as [finish simile with something really unlikely.]
I’ve given more thought to refuting a Bear. I just don’t care what a Bear thinks, much like I don’t care what a trOJie thinks. Obviously a Bear thinks with more polished thought processes than a trOJie, but in the end I just don’t care. Our school is so light years beyond Cal that of course a Bear would be jealous. Face of UCLA – Coach. Face of Berkeley – some pathetic person living in a tree. Case closed. Just tell the guy that in the end, he will still be a Bear and you will still be a Bruin, and you can understand his jealousy.

But then with all due respect
This guy is Stanford’s Law School Dean !!!! How can he possibly run such a prominent institution that trains students in a field he himself couldn’t grasp ?!?
To me, the debacle, and the magnitude of such embarrassments is almost equivalent to a Dean of Admissions posting appalling, below standard SAT scores himself.
Having such non " deanular material " person running Law School is like the insane running the axylum, the tail wagging the dog. Tell that Cal Bear jerk Nothern California has frightening environments. As I recall now, they also has this guy insisting on his rights to walk around campus sans clothes too. Just " spray " him with all the ammos you have.

Different tactic: Stanford.
I remember when I was in school (late 90s) and USC couldn’t win a game in any sport; Stanford was the team I most loved to hate. We were on the cusp of a National Championship in football and Stanford would up and beat us with Ty Willingham at the helm. Likewise, in Basketball they were at their peak, with Montegomery at coach and seemingly every year they were in the hunt for the NC. And, we would up and beat them with The Lizard at the helm. I talked about later with a Stanford alum, and she pretty much agreed. We had much better competition than anything Cal could provide.
So, talk up Stanford and what a great school they are, and how great they are in sports, (I believe they are in 3rd behind us in NCAA championships) and how if we truly have a second rivalry it would be with Stanford.
Then compare Cal to Oregon; they have historically stunk up the conference and only now that they are doing relatively well, they want to make some noise.

Or this one...
An acquaintance and I in high school were serious rivals in the classroom. He was a straight-A student, 4.0, Valedictorian, but a total nerd who did nothing else in high school; no sports, no clubs, nada. His first choice was UCLA, then Stanford, then Cal. I was 3.85 but an accomplished athlete and team captain of 2 teams, member of student gov’t and president of Letterman’s Club. I applied to UCLA as well. Guess what? UCLA and Stanford rejected the nerd, but Cal (his 3rd choice) accepted him. UCLA accepted me. The nerd was devastated and despondent.
The moral of that story is that UCLA (and Stanford) would rather have top-notch students with a life than nerdy geeks who have no life. Apparently Cal is okay with 1-dimensional nerds. Or… in the cases of Lynch, Russell White, DeSean; 1-dimensional FB players.

Russell White
Russell White was not admitted to either UCLA or SC, and Cal took him. While he turned out to be dyslexic, later discovered, the point is at admission time, Cal took him at a Prop 48.

If Cal were so great, why did they ever have to open a southern campus?
Seriously, he seems awfully preoccupied with the “satellite campus” instead of his rival in Palo Alto, or instead od having confindence is his own position.. It seems to be quite the classic inferiority complex.

Treat him as you would any "mentally challenged" person
Speak slowly, and try to use one syllable words. Don’t remind him that the “face” of Berkeley (the vision that comes to mind when you mention the name) is hippies dancing and smoking dope, whereas the face of UCLA is Coach. Don’t remind him of reality. Let him continue in his little world of make believe. Offer him a job after he flunks the bar. Don’t offer him any dope – you would just be an enabler.

Better at everything?
Berkeley people can only point to academics as an area in which they have an edge over UCLA and there isn’t some huge gap there if you go by the rankings. US News published two sets of ranking lists this past year for colleges. In the “National Rankings,” Berkeley was 20 and UCLA was 25. However, in the “World Rankings,” which use a different methodology, UCLA was 30 and Berkeley was 36.
As for everything else, what exactly does Cal do better? Location and campus – UCLA. Attractiveness of student body – UCLA. No Berkeley goggles needed in Westwood. If your buddy disagrees with this, then he must have had some good weed up north, or maybe he consumed a lot of alcohol during his college days.
Sports in general – UCLA by a mile. Look at how many championships each school has won. Three of the four California Pac 10 schools sit at the top of total team championships won. Which one is the odd man out? It’s Berkeley. But wait. They’re good in Rugby and they just became halfway decent in football. Meanwhile, Dorrell had a winning record against Tedford and they still have not been to a Rose Bowl in decades. That program had nowhere to go but up. They’re not suddenly great just because they have improved.
I guess for the extreme left wing types, UCLA might not be liberal enough, although I consider that a good thing.
Berkeley people seem to have this hatred for UCLA and it really doesn’t make sense. They’re sister schools. Maybe it has something to do with Stanford being such an elite institution in both athletics and academics. Berkeley students can’t say anything to their true rival so they pick on their better looking, more popular (we get the most applications in the nation), younger sibling. Unfortunately for them, that younger sibling is arguably their academic equal based on the rankings and that younger sibling beats them hands down in everything else. Their younger sibling is for the most part superior. On second thought, I do understand the hatred Berkeley people have for UCLA.
And if he tells you that UCLA stole Cal’s colors, song, and mascot, you can tell him that we improved upon them and made them famous. Cal uses ugly shades of blue and gold, an old looking, ugly mascot, and a bad version of “Sons of Westwood.” They can either get over it or cry about it from now until the end of time. Friggin’ Hippies. Get a job. Vietnam is over.

My rant was mentioned on SBN's Cal Blog
I guess it struck a nerve and I had a feeling it might. In hindsight, I probably should have kept it to myself. It’s not that I don’t believe what I wrote. I chose UCLA over Berkeley and some other UCLA Alums I know did the same because we thought UCLA was a better place overall. I will stand by my opinions on how the two schools compare. Aside from the “friggin hippies” part, which was a joke, and the parts about the colors and songs, I stand by just about everything I wrote there. I respect UC Berkeley as an academic institution, but I love UCLA and I think we’re better in most ways.
I would take my post back because this negativity just creates more negativity on the other side. As a Bruin, I initially respected and liked Cal because it was a sister school. Then I read a lot of hateful things from Cal fans on the web concerning UCLA and I saw some Cal fans beat up one of their own at a football game because they thought he was a Bruin. His blue shirt was too light. This type of stuff created a hatred in me for that school that might rival any negative feelings I might have for USC, our true rival and the school we’re supposed to hate. In fact, I almost respect USC fans more because our rivalry is a natural one. We’re not sister schools.
My post above will instill hatred for UCLA in Cal fans that might not hate UCLA already and that bothers me. In that way, I’m no better than the Cal fans that sent me down this path or the Cal fan mentioned Seas98’s original post. I would like UCLA fans and Cal fans to respect each other, but my anger got the best of me and I just added to the problem.

Don't be too hard on yourself
There are a fair number of Bezerkley fans who have nourished a bizarre and unfounded hatred of UCLA for years before your post.
Tasser’s post below is correct. For some reason, Cal loves to hate UCLA. Fine. Whatever. Most Bruins acknowledge Cal as a great university with a sizable segment of nitwit numbskulls who are obsessed with hating UCLA.
Attention Cal nutzos: There is no rivalry. Cal is a good school and we don’t really think about you otherwise.

If Cal keeps comparing itself to UCLA...
…wouldn’t that make UCLA the standard?
Seriously though, the animosity is comical. I think Cal is a great school, has some great athletic teams. Sure, I think UCLA is better in most ways, but I’m biased because that’s where I went to school. But Cal is probably my second favorite team in the Pac-10. I may not be a fan of the hippie scene, but then again I spent enough time in Venice Beach while in school to contradict myself. So all in all, the only thing I have a problem with is the obnoxious Cal fans. Really, it’s their fault for getting everyone riled up. Our rival is U$C* and that’s whom we spend time deriding and mocking. Cal should do the same to Stanford, but their problem is that Stanford is in another stratosphere compared to U$C. Even more obnoxious fans than Cal, possibly the most obnoxious in the Pac-10, but other than that, it’s a pretty great school all-around. So I guess Cal’s problem is that they can’t rag on Stanford enough and it spills over to the only other school with which they think they have a “rivalry”…
But hey, what do I know. Iām just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Counterpoint.
A few of you Bruins have a couple of misconceptions about Cal.
First, UCLA is a good school, but we at Cal think our alma mater has the academic edge on you. The US News ranking methodology is specious, uses an arbitrary weighting scheme and has been panned by many, including Stanford’s presidents Casper and Hennessey. Even though Stanford is consistently ranked in the upper tiers of this ranking system, the presidents found fault with it and think it is not a worthwhile metric of academic excellence. (http://tusb.stanford.edu/2007/05/president_hennessy_chronicle_o.html; http://news.stanford.edu/pr/97/970423usnews.html).
So Bruins Roar, I would direct you to a more respected survey in academic circles: http://www.arwu.org/rank2008/ARWU2008_A(EN).htm, published by Shianghai Jao Tong U, or the Times Academic Supplement. In the former, Cal is ranked 3rd behind Harvard & Stanford. UCLA checks in at a very respectable 13 (but not as good as #3!) This ranking system passes the sniff test in other ways. For example, U$C is at 50, above Florida but behind UC Davis and UC Irvine. Pretty much right where you’d reasonably expect to find them.
Just because they shove USNWR under your door for free at the Hilton doesn’t mean it’s any good!
Granted, UCLA is arguably Cal’s academic equal in selected areas. The Anderson school of business compares very favorably with Cal’s Haas, and may very well be more prestigious. But overall, across the universities as a whole: no. As an aside, you might have some anecdote about some people not getting into UCLA but getting into Cal, but I’ve got lots of stories about Cal undergrad students turning down UCLA.
However, the girls are hotter at UCLA and the weather is better. So I’m really looking forward to this fall’s game in Pasadena. Hope the Bears can finally bust the trend of the last 9 years, in which the home team always wins.

Oh and about Stanford ...
Watching Cal beat Stanford in football is one of life’s great pleasures. Reminding Stanford fans of the many beatdowns that Cal administers is almost as good. Stanford beating Cal is bad bad very bad. But there’s a lot more respect at the alumni level in that rivalry than $C-UCLA. Partly because there’s a significant number of people who attend both schools for grad/undergrad. The Stanford undergrads, well there are those cheers that I remember like “Cal’s our b*tch” and “We got in.” Brats. Plus their band is an embarrassment.
U$C, well that place is practically Mordor.

Who are the 10 greatest athletes in Cal history?
You can name the top 10 athletes in UCLA history, throw them out, and UCLA’s second set of 10 would still destroy Cal’s.
This was SI.com’s top 10
10. Flo-Jo
9. Ashe
8. Lisa Fernandez
7. Reggie
6. Troy
5. Ann Meyers
4. JJK
3. Jackie
2. Walton
1. Kareem
This still leaves, among others:
Gail Goodrich (2x NCAA champ, leading scorer on 71-72 Lakers, Naismith HOF)
Jimmy Connors (8 grand slam singles titles)
Karch Kiraly (greatest volleyball player ever, 3 Olympic Gold medals)
Evelyn Ashford (4x Olympic Gold medalist)
Gary Beban (1967 Heisman Trophy winner)
Gail Devers (3 Olympic Gold medals)
Rafer Johnson (1960 decathlon gold medalist)
Jonathan Ogden (9x NFL All-Pro, 11 Pro Bowls, future HOFer)
Kenny Easley (3x consensus All-American, 4x NFL All-Pro, 1984 Defensive POY)
Bob Waterfield (3x NFL All-Pro, 2 time NFL POY, Pro Football HOF)
Cal might have some swimmers (Biondi, Coughlin) that might crack that list, and maybe Jason Kidd. But that’s about it. And keep in mind that’s our JV team.
