WWL Ford's Mock: DC @ #29 to Lakers

It's insider material, so I don' think I can post it, but for anyone who has access, high praise for DC, and Ford's projecting him to the Lakers at pick 29.

Very interesting

As a Lakers fan, I wouldn’t mind DC on the team at all. He strikes me as a Derek Fisher in the making. He’s got character and quickness and lots of potential. But they would be a little heavy at the guard position unless they choose not to sign Shannon Brown, which is a possibilty.

I know this isn’t an official Lakers fan site but I think their biggest need is a gigantic, mean power forward. And if Sasha decided to renege on his contract and move back to Mars, that would be great, too.

As a Bruin, would love to see three UCLA guys on the same team, but as a Laker fan, doesn’t make much sense to me, unless ShanWOW does not come back, as Barnes2JJ says (but I’d really like to see Shannon stay with the team).

That would be awesome

but I see little reason that the Lakers would do anything other than trade this pick. Their roster is (potentially) stocked and the payroll is at critical mass

I don't think the Lakers will trade the pick or go with DC

I think they take a raw, but high ceiling Euro who they can leave in Europe for a year.

Going w/ a Euro that they can keep off the payroll makes perfect sense for the Lakers this offseason.

I'm for it

One of the Lakers’ main defensive weaknesses is small super-quick point guards of the Tony Parker/Steve Nash/Aaron Brooks/ Jameer Nelson variety. Wouldn’t Collison be a better defender against such players than anyone they use now? And he seems good enough offensively (in all respects, and under pressure) that he wouldn’t be an offensive liability, even in crunch-time in the NBA. Given that this draft is heavy with point guards, they might be a bit of a steal. If Kupchak has chance at Collison at the end of the first round I think he be foolish not to take him.

Then again, in the middle of the NBA season I said “Wow, the Lakers just got Adam Morrison! Great!” So I’m no expert.

imagine the D with Kobe, DC, Ariza, Gasol, and Bynum/Odom’s long, quick arms out there. Good luck getting off a good shot! Plus DC shoots the long ball great. Outstanding pick IMHO. Fish ain’t going to be around forever and Brown is going to cost too much if we re-sign Odom and Ariza. Young and cheap, and the Lakers know Ben-Ball warriors can be plugged in as rookies, because they can play D. Doubt we draft him, although I did see Kupchak at some Bruin games last season looking him over. In two seasons Farmar could get the keys to the starting spot, and DC backs him up, like our Final Four run in 2006.

Don't see this happening

Assuming Jackson is coming back next year, his preference has always been for big guards. D-Fish has been one of the few to break that mold, for obvious reasons. I just don’t think that DC will have the size that Jackson is looking for.

Likewise...PS Ford is incompetent

We already have Fisher, and Farmar, and likely Shannon Brown, why need another guard? Farmar seems a more likely heir apparent, waiting in the foyer for awhile now and a great ballplayer and UCLA guy. If the Lakers actually push for someone with an actual contribution here, rather than a Euro, I would look at DeMarre Carroll from Missouri, a PF if they can’t lure Powell back.

Ford is dumb, he says the lakers have “point guard problem.” Have you watched the playoffs sir? Its clearly not a glaring issue; Fisher is a stone cold baller with ice in his veins, he’s a beast! haha. And Farmar!

Point Guard Problem

Well, I think the Lakers weakest position actually is at the point. I mean no disrespect to Fish, Farmar, or Brown, but the other positions are just so strong with Bryant, Ariza, Odom, Bynum, and Gasol (I know everyone says either Ariza or Odom will go due to money issues, but I’m hoping they stick around for less). Fish probably won’t play more than another season or two, and it is possible that Brown could get more money somewhere else (I’m not too familiar with how money works in the NBA so I’m sorry if I seem off on that point), so even though it is incredibly incredibly unlikely, taking a point guard wouldn’t be a ridiculous move if other things were set in motion.

Besides, it is just fun to think about a Lakers team with Ariza, Farmar, and Collison in the lineup.

It doesn't seem like a problem to me

I rarely watch nba basketball, and I logged maybe 15 minutes of watching during the playoffs. With that caveat, it seems to me that the skill set required to play point guard for the Lakers is pretty simple – hand the ball to Kobe and then get out of the way. I think the Lakers will shock the league (and at the same time try to save a few bucks in the salary department.) I look for the Lakers to pass on Collisson and draft BruinBabe 2000. She would obviously ride the pine for a while, but her baking prowess sets her apart from the rest.

Seriously though, the most important passing player in the triangle system is the center. The point guard spot in the triangle isn’t the main passer or conductor of the offense like on other teams, Kobe or not.

Fun fact: not one of Phil Jackson’s 10 championships was won with an all-star point guard.

Well, I'm flattered

My basketball experience consists of riding the pine at the frosh-soph and JV levels of high school, though I did have a 100% free throw average (2 for 2).

As for my baking prowess, you might be confusing me with Bruingirl, but I can bake up some goodies when given the chance. I’ve got lemon bread, blueberry muffins, blueberry coffee cake, chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake and carrot cake ready to go.

By the way Fox, I remember someone suggesting Mrs. Fox for the head football coach job about a year and a half ago. Is she at peace with CRN taking the spot?

This is a good, no, great pick for the Lakers

as there is a real possibility Fisher could retire this offseason, they will likely let Shannon Brown walk, and I’m not sure anyone is sold on Farmar being a starter on this team for the long-term.

As opposed to the other Bruin PG entering the draft, DC is NBA-ready right now, and could contribute immediately. He would be willing to do what it takes as a role player, is a high character guy, and can more than hold his own defensively. The Lakers also have to be feeling pretty good about the UCLA pipeline right now as well.

Mark my words right now: DC will have a better NBA career than JH.
