New York Times: BruinsNation Superior to L.A. Times
While Nestor and the other guys might be too modest to share, I couldn't resist the chance to post a swipe at the "newspaper" known as the L.A. Times and the "journalists" who work there. As Nestor pointed out earlier, there was a very good write-up on the expectations for this football season in the New York Times, which was in line with our own expectations and those of other commentators.
However, the best part of that write-up in the New York Times for me was this:
For constant coverage of U.C.L.A. sports, look no further than BruinsNation.com and, to a lesser degree, the Web site of The Los Angeles Times.
Ouch. Kind of embarassing, considering BN is a collection of Bruin alums, students and fans, who are paid nothing to follow and write on UCLA sports, and the L.A. Times is staffed with "professional journalists" who are paid a good sum to cover UCLA sports, provide analysis and commentary, and serve as the greater Los Angeles area's source of print news. If I owned the L.A. Times, I'd be seriously considering a major staff overall, but that's just me. I mean, maybe some "newspapers" are cool with their peers calling them out as a joke.
But this shouldn't come as a surprise, since they hired losers like Bill Splashme, who writes like a moronic high school sophomore when his lips aren't planted on Cheatie Petey's rear.
As much as this is a pat on the back for the BN crew, this is also a huge shout-out from "The Gray Lady" to all of you. While Nestor, Achilles, Ajax, Rye, et al. are busy throwing up the content, it's all of you who fire up the discussions, throw ideas around, and keep BN buzzing. So BN readers, keep it up.
And Fox 71, I know you love any post blasting the L.A. Times, so, as one of BN's resident geezers, enjoy.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Thanks, Bellerophon
This of course comes as no surprise to the denizens of the BN.
It would be interesting to send that little tidbit to the fishwrap and ask for a comment. I wonder if Plashke, et al., are still “shoveling” to get to the bottom of things at Inheritance Hall. They would probably be too busy digging out the truth to be able to respond.

lol
I saw it and had to chuckle. I’d be embarrassed if I worked in the sports section for LA Times or any other traditional media outlets in Southern California. Not too surprising when the LAT actually thought it could get away with appointing a Trojan alum to post on a blog entitled “What’s Bruin.”
As you said this has everything to do with amazing contributors on BN who have created such a community in last four years, but at the same time it’s a telling indictment on the state of traditional sports media in LA.

Is anyone surprised?
Journalism (and writing in general) is always better when you are covering something you love. Contrary to popular belief, objectivity and passion are not mutually exclusive.
BruinsNation is great because we love UCLA.
Go Bruins.

You Nailed It
As good as we are, and we are very good — the fishwrap is bad because no one there gives a shit about UCLA.
Can there be a better sports program to cover than ours? We have so much personality and character — the quality of our people and their achievements both on and off the playing field, court or in or out of the pool — were it to care, the fishwrap would have no problem writing compelling stories about all things Bruin.
So, BN took over the turf with a bunch of deeply committed, part-time writers/full time Bruins.
Congrat’s to all who actually know how to use their shovels and keyboards and do so, here, on a regular basis.

Congratulations Greek Squad.
Your hard work has been recognized.
Of course they failed to mention that BN also does a better job covering the ongoing indiscretions being perpetrated by “amateur” “student” athletes over at the U of South Central, but we can let that go for now.
pat yourselves on the back fellas.

Both hilarious and true
Congrats to Nestor and the gang. It is high praise, and well-deserved.
And F the Times.

Congrats guys
We’ve known this for a while, but it’s good to see someone else recognize it.

NYT being a little rough...
…on the LAT. How could they find the time to cover UCLA? After all, they’ve been busy breaking stories about all the scandals and corruption at USC. Oh wait, my bad.
On a serious note, congrats on the compliments from the New York Times. They are well-deserved.

No joke here but,
having the majority of my family on the east coast, and growing up reading from the NYT that my dad used to get. I chose to support traditional paper media today, (out of some nostalgic principle I suppose). That being said, I just subscribed to the New York Times, and will be happy to get all my LOCAL news… online. If i’m looking for well written articles, written by actual journalists, I’ll look no further than my home mailbox… Congrats on the news BN.

Those LAT "Sports Journalists" SHOULD be Embarrassed...
…but they won’t be. To feel shame or embarrassment requires a certain level of sense, awareness, and logical thought. There is also an element of courage involved—the courage to face being wrong about something you truly believed or thought. None of those characteristics are demonstrated by these “professionals.”
