UCLA Soccer: Bruins Hold Inter-Milan To A 2-2 Draw
This is pretty freaking amazing I think. UCLA soccer team holds one of the most legendary soccer teams in the world to a 2-2 draw. Sure Inter was not playing all of their starters. Still they had stars like Mancini and Balotelli in the lineup. Carasco and Griffin scored the goals for UCLA. Hopefully they can build on this for the coming season. GO BRUINS.

ummmm, when a university holds a team of PROFESSIONALS (yes, even 2nd stringers) to a draw… it is pretty freaking amazing…

Jose Mourinho
I had forgotten that Mourinho had taken over at Inter last year. It’s hardly a coincidence that when he was in charge at Chelsea they held a summer training camp in Westwood too, back in 2006. He must have been impressed and decided to come back!
Have many other professional football (sorry…soccer!) teams done this does anyone know? There’s obviously a large contingent of individual basketball, football and other stars that use the UCLA facilities during the summer, such as the ones mentioned here in the past few weeks, but how about full teams? Just wondering.
Oh and of course: That is a hell of a result, congrats to all involved and hopefully this bodes well for next year’s team!

Jaffa, I totally missed your comment on Nestor’s other post, you spotted the Mourinho connection well before I did, sorry man!

I saw the Memphis Grizzlies on campus
When they were in town to play the Lakers (and presumably to stomp the Clippers too), back when Earl Watson was on their team, probably for practice. Now that Watson and Russ are on the same team maybe we’ll see the Thunder come to campus a couple times a year.

TO, FWIW
Terrell Owens was playing some pickup basketball on campus this week.
And a hearty congrats to our soccer team. And not just Mancini and Balotelli, Nestor, but Jose Mourinho put out Zlatan Ibrahimovich (before Real Madrid’s spending spree this summer, the highest paid soccer player in the world) and Christian Chivu in the second half. Inter didn’t have any of their first-string goalkeepers playing, but the rest of their starting lineup would be considered a first-team squad that would be starting in Serie A. And our players will be able to say that they played against two World Cup winners (Patrick Vieira for France in 1998 and Marco Materazzi for Italy in 2006) and held their own. Well done!

Viera played?
With rumors of him heading to Spurs I’m surprised he’d have played. Regardless, a very good result for our Bruins.

Yep
I saw him when I went on Tuesday to see the team show up for practice. Surprised that he’s still fitting into their plans to be honest—he’s really on his last legs. But he was the only player that signed for any of the fans when I saw them. BTW, here are my photos again:
