Hi Bruins.
First fanpost. Didn't actually intend on it but I have a question. Please take a min. of your time to read the comments in this article:
http://www.bruinsnation.com/2009/6/29/929007/ucla-where-amazing-begins#17758029
Was this an attack to Russel Westbrook directly? Did I also provoke other UCLA fans (unintended if I did, I swear.)
Just want to clear things up to see if I was really wrong. Thanks!
Btw, If SBnation did allow me to have differnet pictures, I'd have a different pictures here at Bruins Nation, and a differnet one at Clippers Nation. (But I dont think it does, so I'm stuck with the one I started out with.)
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I think it might come off as an attack of sorts on Howland and his system (which I think is working for UCLA). You said Westbrook didn’t thrive? Umm, did you watch that D? Did you see his offensive capabilities? All those developed at UCLA. He didn’t go from a mid-level recruit to 1st rounder by himself. Is there a difference between a shooting and scoring guard? I don’t think there is.
Also, you said “individual season at UCLA”. I mean, I don’t remember too clearly but I’m pretty sure he wasn’t a 1 & done. Do you watch UCLA basketball? Where did he learn to excel? And if you don’t think that playing at UCLA made him stand out just a little, you might be on something.
Bottom line, you might have thought out your post a little more. But I do appreciate your willingness to engage and back up some of your arguments. Can’t say I wholeheartedly agree, but still…
Also, appreciate the tone of your reply.

Agreed that Westbrook developed.
Especially from a mid-level recruit to first rounder.
Anyways, when asked if Russel is a sg, I’d probably say no.. Normally, at 6-3 you’d probably want that player to be a pg. (Not always the case via. Eric Gordon, Dwayne Wade, JJBREA, Iverson (However the lsat two seem to play pg now.) But seems to be that the difference between these guys who play sg is that they can shoot. I have a feeling that these guys could possibly even run the point. (EG will probably take some time to develope the pg, but played a few pg in hs i believe.) The thing is, Russel isn’t exactly a shooter (please refer to the stats in the NBA in the comment.) Russel also needs to polish up his passing attributes.
Anyways, uclabruin34 kind of stated it. I was referring only merely to his 12 ppg and like 3-4 assist. That’s defintiley not #4 pick worthy coming out of college. But playing under Howland and showing his skills during OKC showed that he had potentnial and etc..

i think
by “individual season at UCLA” I dont think he mean that he was only here for year but rather meant to talk about the season and stats he accumulated personally (his ppg, assists, minutes, etc). at least thats what i thought

Westbrook Probably Developed Quicker At UCLA
Russell’s NBA career prospects are entirely due to the fact he went to UCLA. His scholarship offer at UCLA was a last minute deal replacing Jordan Farmar if I remember correctly.
Had he gone to San Diego State or UNLV he’d be going into his senior season right now as a possible conference player of the year candidate. His draft prospects would be mid to late first round at best.
Russell’s incredible work ethic and freakish athleticism combined with Ben Howland’s superior defensive coaching produced a 20 year old top quality NBA point guard. If you took away either of those elements and Russell wouldn’t be anywhere near where he is today.

Of course of course, Russel isn't bad on the defensive end.
It just seemed to me that Westbrook would have been the right guy to guad Rose, not Collison.
Also, had Westbrook stayed for one more year, I don’t think he would have been #4 in this years draft. Which I believe you said.. Unless I read it wrong.) Let’s face it, Westbrook woud have been fighting mins. with Collison, Holiday, and possibly even Shipp( played some guard even though I would probably list him as a forward.)
And yes, Westbrook was very athletic. I think that might be one of the bigger reasons he was selected by OKC?

You can't just judge...
Based soley off of one game. You have to take the whole season into account. As for not meriting a #4 pick off of what he averaged…nobody in Howland’s team is going to average what people at other schools average.

I always thought Kevin Love
did a fine job at UCLA. I was a bit disappointed to see him go as I didn’t believe he was ready to leave UCLA yet, but nevertheless, he’s still very talented. I always thought Jrue could have done wayyyy better than what he showed this season. But your right, its hard to average 18 on Howland’s team.

Discussing UCLA on a UCLA blog.. who knew?

Not so much
as discussing “What I said” and “everybody’s reaction to what I said.” Jack Duh Sun’s comments on the original thread could be said to be about UCLA, but again, this is just about the comments and reactions themselves.
