Interesting Take On Pac-10 Run Defenses
Ted Miller has an interesting take on Pac-10's run defense. He basically throws up stats from last year's run defense and shows how the Pac-10's final standing was fairly consistent with the quality of run defense each team had.
So just for fun based on that theory he looks into how many starters are returning to each team's DL and tries to project this year's standing accordingly. Of course he is doing all of it in fun to start up a discussion. I wouldn't put too much stock into it but it's still interesting to read the datapoints. GO BRUINS.

I don't totally agree
Most stats in football are correlated with other stats.
For example, teams that run highly effective spread offenses are rarely tops in defensive stats. Why? Because playing that style leads to more possessions per game as scoring is quicker. More possessions for your team to score, but also more for the other team to gain yards on your defense.
In the same way, a very poor offense will have the same effect on your defense. If your offense is punting after every 3 downs, your opponent will have more chances to run up yards then if the offense held on the ball and was able to drive and score more effectively. It creates more offensive possessions for the other team during the game.
I think reading individual stats in a vacuum can be misleading. Football is about balance and who controls the pace of the game.

A classic example
One year towards the end of the the Toledo tenure, we had a highly ranked pass defense simply because our run defense was so bad, nobody bothered to throw more than a few passes a game.

Bad memories
That was even true against the good teams like the rose bowl team from 98.
I have never seen such a good team that could not tackle or stop the other team from running up the middle on 6 consecutive plays.
