A Useful Nugget In Marcia Smith's Mostly Useless Column: Neuheisel's Suit
The second worst columnist in the Los Angeles area (second to Bill Splashme) is back. Marcia Smith from the OC Register is back in business with a writeup on CRN. I am not going to provide any links because she is one of those idiots who doesn't deserve any. Her latest column starts with trademark Marcia idiocy:
The novelty of golden boy has faded. The whimsy in his blue eyes, dream-big boom in the voice and the cockiness that this new-kid-back-on-the-block displayed by taking aim early at crosstown rival USC have almost vanished as well.
WTF does CRN's "blue eyes" have anything to do with UCLA football?
Anyway, to no one's surprise her column is mostly useless. Although she was able to slip in one interesting story (while showing her Trojan colors by taking another insulting shot at CRN):
Neuheisel, a former Bruin quarterback, appeared a coach no longer consumed by the glory of his own homecoming or by his own enthusiasm over being hired to coach Division I football after controversy-checkered stops at Colorado and Washington. He emerges a wiser man set on proving himself a capable architect for UCLA's ambitious rebuilding.
His players can see this. They noticed the change Sunday night when Neuheisel gathered the players for an hour-long team meeting – the first to open fall camp – inside the Acosta Sports Training near Spalding Field.
"Coach showed up wearing a suit, black coat, white shirt and black tie, which was kind of strange since he always wears UCLA coaching clothes," recalled sophomore wide receiver Nelson Rosario.
The players howled at the sight of slick Rick before he calmed them down at addressed them sternly.
"Bet you're wondering why I'm wearing this," Neuheisel told them, lifting his lapels and cuing up a slideshow.
He presented the players with images of the Bruin teams who played in past postseasons. He showed off how the coaches and players arrived in suits, dressed appropriately for their success.
Notice how she is peddling Colorado/Washington story into CRN's second year at UCLA while slipping in "Slick Rick." Guess that's the kind of class we can expect from a joke columnist from a joke paper.
Still I thought the story re. showing up in a suit in the team meeting to make a point about history of previous UCLA coaches and players was very interesting. I remember hearing stories like that when CRN was an assistant under Donahue when he was always doing little something to fire up the players before big games.
Obviously we are going to need lot more than suits to get to where we are. But as always it's always refreshing to hear how CRN is trying to get his players fired up and reminding them of UCLA football tradition every opportunity he gets. UCLA football always had tradition. The problem was before Neuheisel got here no one was doing much to remind our players about it and subsequently create expectations to live up to it.
GO BRUINS.

Aww. That hurt. I think I just became demonstrably dumber.
It is a rare pleasure to find such poorly written work from a columnist. “Spalding” field, 1 instead of one, etc etc. Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!

Why?
Why can’t we get some sports columnists that like UCLA? They all seem to adore Cheatey Petey and his: arrogance + ignorance = sc theology. I am sick and tired of it!!!!!

When we win a major bowl game
or finish in the Top 10.
Unless the NCAA actually comes down hard on USC, the columnists are going to love a winning team that plays in sunny weather. For the past few years, U$C has consistently contended for the BCS Championship.
But I think the tide is turning. It seems like most of the UCLA-focused columns I’ve read lately have to do with CRN’s recruiting skills and expectations of a resurgence in football. Also, Carroll’s rep took a hit when he whined about Mark Sanchez entering the draft.
I think it helps that CRN is more media-savvy and personable than his successor, but UCLA will get positive coverage as long as we win some games. The columnists need a new storyline.

Why, Oh Why
another bubble-headed female sports “journalist?” She is so disgustingly simple-minded and shallow, it just infuriates me that there are so many talented, bright, knowledgable women out there who aren’t given a chance to write about sports, but she is.
I don’t care if she doesn’t love UCLA, really, if she actually had some skill and talent to do the damned job. At all. It’s like she’s writing pointlessly about unicorns and rainbows all the time, and taking obvious, jr-high-level cheap shots. It reflects horribly on female sports journalists.

...And she's making S#!t up...
“The novelty of golden boy has faded…blue-eyes…cockiness…have almost vanished.”
WTF! She’s making it seem as if he was just some sort of gimmick that UCLA brought in to fill the seats! Neu is an accomplished coach, and if not for some of the BS scandals that they keep bringing up instead of finding the real killers (think OJ/trOJans), others might have noticed that already. No matter, b/c in the near future, they will take notice, b/c he & the team will make them take notice. The way she put it, all hope is lost and the entirety of the Bruin Nation is solemn, waiting for our own execution. If all of the “novelty” has vanished, why was he able to haul in such a great recruiting class this past season and on his way to bringing in another stellar group? Doesn’t quite seem like a ghost town around hear to me. A good indicator of his progress is looking at the choices of schools that the top recruits are choosing between. The top 3 prospects in the nation all have UCLA still listed on their board! Maybe they won’t end up here, but the fact that a 4-8 squad even landed on their radar says that Neu is doing something right.
But I guess it is easier to just make shit up instead of doing real reporting. Makes for a juicier story that way. I guess she went to the Scott Templeton/Baltimore Sun School of Journalism (if you weren’t a fan of “The Wire”, that one probably went over your head). Here’s to our boys giving them something to really report about in the near future. Cheers!

It's wishful thinking
She writes for her little trOJie readers (the ones who can actually read), so it’s really wishful thinking. They are terrified by Coach Neuheisel because they know that he’s the real deal. I would love to see what she writes when the tide turns and when that garbage program finally gets what it deserves.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
