Pac-10 Close To Alamo Bowl Deal
According to the Seattle Times, via the WWL, the Pac-10 is close to a deal with the Alamo Bowl in which the conference's #2 team would go to San Antonio. Not only would this deal improve the conference's bowl lineup with the Holiday Bowl taking the conference's #3 team, but if the report is true, it will also result in a big pay bump.
The Alamo Bowl is also set to move to January 2nd this year so if it stays in that spot, it will give the Pac-10 a great post-New Year's spot. Throw in the increased exposure Texas' fertile recruiting ground and this looks like a great move.
The only real qualm I have with this deal is that it will pit the Pac-10 against the Big 12, which is also the case in the Holiday Bowl. Some variety here would be nice. Maybe a SEC matchup?

San Antonio Is a Great Place!
Word on the street is always that Bruins don’t “travel”. I think San Antonio may pull some people away from home. It is a really great place, good hotels, food and entertainment. One of my favorite places in Texas.
The Big 12 is pretty deep with exciting teams. The only downside may be that we will play a Texas team in Texas and they will have a “home game”.
But, over all, I think it’s a good deal.

I was in San Antonio for the Final Four
It’s a great city and if UCLA ends up playing in the Alamo Bowl, I recommend all Bruin fans go. It’s a really fun place to spend a few days. The River Walk is one of the most fun places I’ve been and the Mexican food is second to none.

San Antonio
I’ve never been to San Antonio but I was excited to see this news because I’ve always wanted to go. And I would definitely travel for this game and believe other Bruins would, too. I’m glad to see 66 and Rye endorsing this potential deal.
But better Mexican food than L.A.? Oh my. That’s a bold statement, friend.

Barnes, are you old enough to remember Jim Healy?
I wish I could cue up his take on Ed “Superfan” Beiler, who Healy called “the Riverman,” because of his statement “and what is that river – the Los Angeles River, runs through the heart of downtown San Antonio.”
I likewise have never been to San Antonio, but I’ve been to Los Angeles. I haven’t found better Mexican food than the Los Angeles area. With the football season still months and months away (or so it feels) maybe it’s time to fill the space with another food blog, which if my memory serves me correctly, Barnes, you have started in the past.

Not much running down the San Antonio River lately
There’s been a drought for the last 18 months.

Hmm
A couple of responses/comments:
1. Yes, I am old enough to remember Jim Healy. I used to listen to him religiously in my dinky studio apartment on Landfair Avenue when I was a student. The fading SC* song was actually one of my favorites clips, although the one you referenced rings a bell.
2. Although I admit I have never been to Texas (outside of the Dallas airport), I am sure there simply must be good Mexican food there. So I freely acknowledge my ignorance of Mexican food outside of California. But the Mexican food I’ve had in LA has generally been better than the Mexican food I’ve had in Mexico, if that is possible and/or makes sense.
3. I’m somewhat hesitant to start a new food post because I don’t want to distract from the excitement of the new season, but I’ll give it a thought if I can think of a new angle. I can honestly say I have taken a few of the comments by BN’ers to heart (or to stomach) and have followed up on recommendations before. So, food and restaurant recommendations can and do have some useful value, at least to this sports fan.

I was there too
Great city! I hope this comes through because I always thought it was lame that the #2 team in the Pac-10 goes to the Holiday Bowl. Come on.

Pac-10 vs SEC in San Antonio...
….would be incredible.

That was my thinking
The geography of the Pac-10/SEC makes a bowl matchup tough, but Texas provides a great site for such a pairing.

Most Definitely
My only thing is that I wish they were looking at either New Year’s Eve or January 1.
Los Angeles Rams and the UCLA Bruins!!!!!

Is there
an actual chance the Big 12 gives up the pay day? I imagine they wouldn’t trade this spot for nothing.
