Re. Shady Calipari's Memphis Cheaters & Chetey Petey

The story of Memphis getting slapped down by the NCAA is kind of funny. Here are few reasons:

  • First, is it really all that shocking given Calipari's previous history? I don't really write about recruiting because I find blogging about it on a day to day basis kind of boring (BTW if others are interested though, go crazy). But I do follow it very closely and keep track of conversations. And given what we have heard of Calipari over the years this is like watching Bill Splashme discovering Chetey Petey doesn't follow the the rules. So I just had to kind of laugh when I read the story about Memphis getting busted without Calipari having to suffer any kind of consequences. I don't expect anything else from the incompetent toolbags running the NCAA.
  • Second, it's funny that it didn't take NCAA that long to at least come down with some sort of punishment on Memphis (even though they are totally allowing Calipari to skate around freely). That just puts in context how pathetic they look wrt to dealing with the mountain of scandals from the cesspool that is Mike Garrett's athletic program. Again that goes back to the last setence of my first bullet point. This is an organization that is run by bunch of incompetent toolbags.

Going back to Memphis of course this totally negates their "victory" over UCLA. You can bet that without Rose they wouldn't have any kind of shot against the Ben Ball warriors from the 2008 season. We got cheated pure and simple. And even writers such as Jill Painter in the Daily News (who normally don't wade into with black and white positions) recognize how NCAA cheated UCLA out of a shot at number 12:

How could the NCAA not know that Rose, one of the top recruits in the nation, traveled to another state to take the SAT after three failed attempts and miraculously netted a qualifying score one month before enrolling? How did that not smell as fishy as the stuff former Memphis coach John Calipari serves at Cal's Championship Steakhouse in the Tennessee city?

Memphis even knew the Educational Testing Service invalidated the player's SAT score, thus making him ineligible, midway through his freshman season.

Without Rose, Memphis was still a good team, but maybe not a Final Four team.

Painter didn't stop there. She went straight after the Culprit in Chief:

Calipari left Memphis for Kentucky this year and became the highest-paid coach in college basketball. UMass is paying the price. And so are schools like UCLA. But not Calipari.

Calipari was at a state fair in Kentucky on Thursday when news broke. He was too busy basking in Southern cheer to worry about vacating victories. He got away with a crime again and doesn't have to do any time.

Well Jill. We can probably say the same thing about Chetey Petey from cross town. Perhaps you guys can start calling on the NCAA to do something about his renegade program right now so that he doesn't continue to pull off on a yearly basis what Calipari did it in both Massachusetts and Memphis.

I guess the lesson for big time coaches here is simple. Nothing wrong with not following the rules. The NCAA will not come after you. They are powerless to punish you.

Just don't fill out any March Madness brackets thought. That's when all hell will break lose.

Douche

The ncaa is worthless. Why even have them around if they can’t regulate its members. The entire freakin world knew how dirty Calipari was. From his days at UMass to his “friendly” relationship with Worldwide Wes (Rodney Guillory?) and getting players from alleged reputable prep schools (Taj Gibson?), everyone knew what a snake he was.

Programs/Coaches need to get as close to the Death Penalty as possible so that it teaches others to follow the rules. But of course, we have the ncaa. Blah~

Just despicable

that plague, Calipari, is allowed to leave another school in shambles while he rides off into the sunset to another program with nary a repercussion. While the school shares some culpability, the penalties should follow the coach in a more official manner like a glaring scarlet letter.

Derrick Rose has never given me any reason to dislike him as a person. Obviously, his future was in the gym, not the classroom, and NBA’s ridiculous mandatory one-year rule forced the situation. The NBA is doing EVERYONE a disservice by forcing adult athletes to go to school.

Except

a player like Greg Monroe, who would have surely gone to the NBA out of high school, but is now returning to Georgetown to work on his game and subsequently attend more classes.

Jason King of Yahoo! Sports weighs in:
No wonder the illicit money continues to be scattered like birdseed. No wonder 18-year-old kids who couldn’t afford a clunker are suddenly driving new cars. No wonder family members who live in poverty are coming up with the dough to fly across the country for games (For Heisman presentations?) or to relocate to the city where their son plays basketball.

We shouldn’t be stunned that so much cheating goes on in college basketball. (Or Football for that matter) Not after Thursday . . . . . . . the NCAA might as well have used a bullhorn to deliver its message to coaches across the land: Serious and repeated improprieties don’t bring serious repercussions.

Emphasis and Parentheticals are mine. No mention of USC, but who else could he be referring to with that quip about poor kids driving shiny new cars?

I may be mistaken...

but I thought Calipari stands to forfeit something like $3M worth of his salary if Memphis looses their appeal.

Did I hear that wrong? Heard the story on ESPN last night.

Seems like a small price to pay given his past history, but still not inconsequential.

Shame on Kentucky, Too

They knowingly hired a dirty coach in a desperate attempt to become relevant, again, in college basketball.

I hope he gets them in trouble, too.

Maybe, then, the job market for him will dry up.

Kentucky and Calipari

Hiring Calipari does not necessarily mean Kentucky will become big winners. Hiring Calipari makes it just about inevitable that Kentucky will get sanctioned by the NCAA just after he moves on.

We know he’ll do anything for money. Maybe we can pool our resources and hire him to go interivew at just$c while wearing a wire. Nah. Even a confession by Garrett captured on tape wouldn’t be enough for our friends at the ncaa. But I haven’t totally given up. Eventually the Teflon Don got convicted. Eventually Teflon Tech will get some sanctions.

total sleaze

I hated him before, and I will keep hating him. Him can refer to Rose and/or “Coach Cal”. I sincerely hope the NCAA gets him soon, though that’s doubtful. He ruined my sophmore year at ucla, and my friend wrote up on it if anyone is interested in what he wrote (it involves him cheating us ucla students of a celebration):

how else was Camby going to afford Pot and Hookers

without Calapari footing the bill?

This sleaze ball not only gave Camby money, he did so knowing it would be used on drugs and prostitiutes.

This is why Chaney at Temple hated him so much. He does nothing to develop his players into citizens but instead appeals to their most base instincts.
