[H]e's (Rick Neuheisel) got UCLA fans starting to froth. After all, they point out, in his second year at Colorado, Neuheisel went 10-2. In his second year at Washington, he went 11-1. And yes, he went 4-8 in his first year at UCLA, but Carroll went 6-6 in his first at USC.
Plus, Neuheisel is nearly 10 years younger than Carroll. He plays the guitar, likes to go inner-tubing down rivers, recruits players and boosters and media like he's on an amphetamine drip. "There's 13 million people in L.A. and no pro football! There's room for both of us!"
Then again, Carroll, 57, looks 37. He runs patterns -- often for an hour -- after practice. He makes 2 a.m. sojourns into the center of the Crips-Bloods gang wars to talk peace and hope. He runs a funnel for great high school players straight to the NFL, with 56 draftees so far. With his long hair facing some permanent unseen wind machine, his mug ever-tan, the man is a fountain of cool.
So how does Wonder Boy plan to topple all that?
Maybe this is how: Last year, the two bumped into each other at Inglewood High School, recruiting the same player. The story goes that Carroll said to Neuheisel, "The UCLA coach is out recruiting an L.A. kid? Crazy."
To which Neuheisel said, "Won't be the last," and walked away.
Reel, reel, reel.

Great story ...
even if it was written by Rick Reilly — the Andy Rooney of sports journalism.
Go Bruins

I don't care if the article was written by Grocho . . .
. . . Marx because, under the old regime from 2-6 years ago, it would not have been written at all. The Bruins were a media void from 2004-2007. Thank God we are now past that.

Why do you say that.
This is a great article written by a phenomenal writer.
I would say Andy Rooney is a compliment? But your tone makes it seem (“even though”) a bad thing.
Rick Reilly has written many memorable things, and to me, was the beginning the idea of things like E:60, investigative
and interesting, thought provoking journalism for sports

Can we all just stop for a second,
take a deep breath, and sincerely appreciate all that is CRN. Classy, effective, engaging, and professional. Add in his stellar resume and alma mater, and I cannot think of a better match. Way to stick it to petey. Let’s go get ’em.
Ps. I apologize in advance for the mushy nature of this post, but seriously… we’ve been in the dark long enough and finally seeing the light is a truly emotional experience.

Guys, here’s what I wrote to Rick Reilly after reading it:
Great article, but if you ever get around to a follow-up:
1. Scout.com had UCLA’s 2009 Recruiting Class at #5 & USC at #9.
2. 5 of those recruits: Randall Carroll, Xavier Su’a-Filo, Morrell Presley, Keenan Graham, & Stan Hasiak picked a UCLA scholarship over a USC one.
3. To add insult to injury Rick Neuheisel recruited Damien Thigpen away from Lane Kiffin.
4. Norm Chow = 2003 & 2004 National Champs, Pete Carroll hasn’t won one since.
5. UCLA’s 13–9 win in 2006 eliminated USC from the BCS championship and opened the door for Florida.
6. Speaking of that, UCLA holds the longest rivalry winning streak: 8 games from 1991-98
7. Won’t be the last… yup, we have Blue Thunder! BTW: you can’t spell Trojan without OJ! :) UCLA GO FIGHT WIN BABY!

Not to be a stickler
but don’t believe the SUC hype that they won a national championshipe in 2003. That year LSU won the BCS championship game and SUC won a writers poll.
"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

I've been saying this to sc fans forever
They will still claim that they’re the national champs despite facing off and beating a weak UM team. Besides, writers should not be determining who the national champs are anyways.

I'll buy 2003.
But what was that schmaltz about going back and digging up a championship from 1939 or whatever? Are you serious?

Reel, reel, reel.
That just reminds me of the many times that coach has said, “They’re on the hook, they just don’t know it yet.”
