It's a good thing we got Brehaut some time vs. SDSU. We do have a bye week after K-State so Prince may only miss 2 games. Tough break for Prince.

"UCLA redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince has a fractured jaw and will be out three to four weeks, head coach Rick Neuheisel announced today.

Prince was injured late in the 19-15 win at Tennessee when he was hit on a third-down play in the Bruins' end zone. He returned only to kneel on the final two snaps of the win.

He was examined in the locker room after the game and returned to Los Angeles with the team. He had x-rays this morning that confirmed the fracture on the right side of his jaw. His jaw will be wired shut to assist with the healing process. "

Whoa! Time for new perspective

Hopefully what we have seen of K State is accurate. Our running game will to be on, so that Brehaut will have the opportunity to grow into the starting role. We know he is good, and next weeks game is important in building (adding to) his confidence before we hit conference. At least we have the right coaches to prepare him!

by bruinblue85 on Sep 13, 2009 1:56 PM PDT reply actions

Uh wow

That makes me admire this kid’s toughness even more. He went back in after that shot for the kneel downs.

Thank God we have a bye after K-State … I am guessing we are going to see more conservative calls next week to break in Brehaut.

Get well soon Kevin.

by Nestor on Sep 13, 2009 1:56 PM PDT reply actions

Ok, now that naked bootleg call really looks bad

But fortunately, I don’t think there’s too big of a dropoff from Prince to Brehaut.

Good thing we have a nice stable of running backs!

Ouch ouch ouch.

Get well soon, Kevin, and thank you for everything you’ve done so far. You are the real thing.

wow, good luck to Prince on his recovery….that sucks big time

thankfully for the Bruins, the next 2 games over the 3 week stretch aren’t going to be as tough as the last one, and hopefully should give them some time to just stretch and practice execution without as much pressure.

I have a good feeling about Brehaut

I think he is going to be another baller (just like Prince).

by Nestor on Sep 13, 2009 2:09 PM PDT reply actions

Brehaut

Brehaut has a better passing rating ;)
but uh… What about craft? Is he going to have an equal shot? I’ll wait for more info

I was really excited to see the offense really cut loose on Saturday, but oh well, get some more carries, we should have a talent edge over the next two schools, plus coaching. Now prince is going to have to work for the starting job

by ucla13_usc9 on Sep 13, 2009 2:13 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

CRN said Brehaut is the #2

so if the #1 goes down, you’ve gotta think the #2 will step in.

Haha

Ya… That would be the most logical answer.

My heart sank seeing this

Prince looked to be in really bad shape after that “safety” though, so I’m not really surprised. I guess we can put to rest any controversy about burning Brehaut’s redshirt now.

by Tydides on Sep 13, 2009 2:18 PM PDT reply actions

Illegal Hit?

I thought helmet to helmet hits like the one Prince received were illegal and that NCAA was supposed to crack down on that this season? I hope Prince gets well soon.

by apbruin on Sep 13, 2009 2:20 PM PDT reply actions

Me too

Can anyone comment on that? Shouldn’t that have been a major penalty on the Vols, giving the Bruins a first down—and protecting a young qb?

And my good wishes to Kevin, too. I’m just glad there was no serious concussion there.

by Herodotus on Sep 13, 2009 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

It was a very painful looking hit

But looked like a legal one to me, especially considering that Prince was a runner at that point and was looking to get out of the endzone.

by insomniacslounge on Sep 13, 2009 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

The helmet-to-helmet penalty

Is specifically written to protect ‘defenseless’ QBs and WRs. Unfortunately, once the QB begins running and lowers his shoulder (as Prince did on that sequence), a helmet-to-helmet hit is typically not considered a penalty.

Now, if Prince had been turned around/was trying to slide, etc….then yes, it would have been a penalty.

by CAJason80 on Sep 14, 2009 1:56 AM PDT up reply actions

well, considering how crappy that game was called, including what should have been pick #6 for Rahim…assume the refs just didn’t care >_>

SEC refs Jobbed us all night

Only called tenn for 2 penalties for 10 yards. They had no desire to call an even game

"when you've seen how big the world is, how can you make due with this?"

by silverlakebruin on Sep 13, 2009 3:36 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Nothing new for the SEC

I recall Prothro and the ’65 team going to play the Vols in the last game of the season, just after securing the Rose Bowl appearance by beating ’SC the week before. The refs were homers, ingoring several penalties that should have been called against Tennessee and continually placing the ball on the short side of the field for every UCLA possession regardless of where the last play actually ended. We lost, and after that game, Prothro, who was from Tennessee said something like he was ashamed to be a Tenneseean.

by bruinhawk on Sep 13, 2009 5:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Let's hope he's back soon

We will certainly have a conservative offensive game plan for the games against KSU and Stanford and, let’s hope, he can be back in time for the big Oregon/Cal doubleheader. The thing that bothers be the most is that he made a lot of progress between his first two games. Smarter decisions, no interceptions, starting to minimize those little freshman mistakes. Let’s hope this doesn’t set back that growth too much.

I have the utmost faith in our team, and I’m sure we will be counting on Brehaut simply to manage the offense, not necessarily to lead the whole team.

In watching the replay, I kept cringing every time Prince got knocked down, over and over again. He is one tough kid, and let’s hope he is back real soon.

Welcome to the show, Brehaut!

I can’t wait to see this kid take the field at the Rose Bowl. Losing Prince is tough but I think Richard will do just fine. Chow’s hand picked QB of the future. GO BRUINS!

He's not retired...THANK YOU!

by baybruin415 on Sep 13, 2009 2:27 PM PDT reply actions

I believe that Norm Chow will keep a balanced attack...

but will rely on a lot of shotgun, screens, and roll outs with the Tight Ends staying active. I think if anything, this will insure that the Bruins remain focused on this weeks contest.

As for the following game against Stanford, I am also unconcerned. Wake Forrest ran 45 times for 251 yards (5.5 + ypc), and also amassed around 240 yard through the air. These games are winnable.

Kevin Craft set the standard last year for Bruin toughness (as did Terrence Austin), and Prince did nothing to lower that standard. Prince was hit at least 4 yards deep in the end zone, and still got the ball across the endline (BS replay review notwithstanding). I think that Brehaut will continue where Prince left off. And should he falter, I truely have no issue with Craft. Craft doesn’t have the skill set of Prince or Brehaut, but neither did Patrick Cowen.

Of course, I’m an eternal optimist.

Prince is a warrior

Kevin Prince is a warrior, great to see. Brehaut has the right attitude to succeed. He kept saying throughout camp and the first week that he has to prepare in case anything happens, well here is his chance. We get to see what Brehaut can do, and it will foster some competition between the two, although I think Prince deserves the job back when he’s healthy again. We still have that defense back there for Brehaut to rely on.

Gotta take our lumps...

…unfortunately football is a violent sport and there will be injuries. I have no doubt Brehaut can take over the offense, there is a reason he was recruited and a reason he is the #2. What happens if Brehaut lights up the scoreboard in the interim?

As far as Craft, he is to be commended for what he did last season after getting the snot kicked out of him every play f every game. However, he is a senior and is not the future of the program at all.

The Stanford game is in 20 days. Does that mean prince might play? That is three weeks.

different feeling

In the preceding regime, this would have been a huge negative. Then again, in the preceding regime, this game would not have ended well, either. Just being honest.

Having watched yesterday in its blistering entirety . . . this is a new era.
Expect Brehaut to have a decent game. Expect the Defense to have an outstanding one (again). Prince took a beating yesterday, that is true, but he answered the bell each time, and kept in the game. That’s what winners are made of – at any level. This makes me want to look for ways to fit (another) Stanford road trip into the budget.

that roll out call by Neu ...

was crazy.

We should have run a qb sneak … let the time run out on the play clock … taken delay of game … then taken the safety on fourth down.

The potential upside on that play was far outweighed by the downside risk and it ended up costing us Kevin Prince for a month.

I say Neu called it now Chow because he owned up to it on the post game show.

Luckily, we play a weak K State team this week then have a bye. The bye week gives Brehaut 14 days to prepare for Stanford.

Then we play Oregon at home and it’s possible Prince is back in time for Cal.

Disappointing but...

I think we will be ok. Brehaut will get some experience and hopefully, we will be able to keep our momentum while KP is out.

Injuries happen which is why depth is so important. This is a drag but I am not devastated by this.

I figured some thing bad happened, it didn’t look good at the time. Just hope he’ll be ok in a few weeks. I know when my cousin had her jaw wired after having surgery that she couldn’t eat solid food for 8 weeks, but she did drink a lot of protein shakes, and stuff like that, I’m sure the nutritionist will make sure he has what he needs to keep the weight on. Brehaut, looked good last week, so I’m sure we will be fine there too… As long as our D does what it needs to do, and we have the O line doing their job keeping our running game going, we’ll be fine… Get well soon Kevin… Keep the faith Bruins!!!!

DAMN! I hope KP gets healthy as fast as possible but I do not want him to step on the field if he is not ready to play.

There are those that questioned Brehaut burning his RS. THIS is the reason why. We are not 2 deep across the board at all positions.

The team is going to have to tighten their belts and do what is necessary because nobody will be shedding a tear for us nor will they make any excuses for us. I have concerns how the injury is going to affect KP but this may be a blessing in disguise when all is said and done.

GL KP and we are all rooting for a fast and complete recovery. GO BRUINS!!!!

by buffsnbruins on Sep 13, 2009 5:13 PM PDT reply actions

Brehaut has practiced against one of the best defenses in the PAC 10.

While this hardly qualifies as game experience, it doesn’t hurt either.

I was expecting to see Brehaut sometime in the fourth quarter anyway, so in this case he just gets in the game with the starting offensive line, backs, and receivers. A good day means that Craft gets in in the fourth quarter with the second team.

If Brehaut plays lights out

against Kstate and Stanford, then what?

by captainqtp on Sep 13, 2009 5:47 PM PDT reply actions

This makes me want to cry

Not so much because I fear KSU and Stanford. I was really, really hungry for some offensive flexing, which I felt we were in a position to do after these first two trials.

We’re probably in for some safe play for now.

As for whether Brehaut should have a chance to steal the job, I say no, because our opponents will have been KSU and Stanford. Also, KP’s injury has nothing to do with throwing, so he won’t be returning with any real liabilities.

guess personal fouls don't always get called.

all the speculation on the safety centered on whether or not he crossed the goal line, and most everybody failed to see that it was an illegal hit. You can’t hit the QB helmet to helmet like that. I guess the refs missed that part of it too. Overall i thought they were fair. There were a few calls that I didn’t like at first, but proved correct when I saw the replay. This safey, however, seems to have been blown on two levels. Also when Moore got his 3rd interception i never saw the penalty.. So does Prince get injured every time he steps on the field?

craft or brehaut

im sorry but i have to say you should go with Craft. He has the experience and last year he played without a good line, with Paulsen, without his best receiver, and without any decent running backs. With those handicaps he’s lucky he didn’t finish the season in the morgue. Unless he is just like Crompton he has to get better… And I don’t think you can question his toughness. That’s absurd. He was on the field with a broken jaw. Its just that I heard he’s only played 10 games in the last 3 years.

by godzilla29 on Sep 13, 2009 6:41 PM PDT reply actions

We will go with our coach’s decision. Also, it seems like you have no idea how Brehaut pretty much beat Craft out for the number 2 spot during spring and fall practices. Again, you sound like a pretty uninformed, casual sports fan and not aware of what has taken place at UCLA. You might want to read up a little and be better informed before diving in here.

prince will lose alot of reps..

I don’t think you should underestimate the loss of Prince for these weeks. He could be getting some much needed playing time and experience against weaker teams which he needs, because despite the win over Tennessee he is like most of the team, very young..talented but young, and it will very difficult to do well in the Pac-10 being so unsettled at QB., Tennessee was a physical team but terribly flawed at Q, and in their offensive schemes, and easy pickings for our defense. The Pac-10 teams are by and large going to have much better offenses and we are not going to be able to scratch by on 19 points.

by Nestor on Sep 13, 2009 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Goodbye

Plenty of other places in the internets where you can argue how rooting for U$C* is a good thing for UCLA.

by Nestor on Sep 13, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

"We" do better when the Pac-10 is respected

While I wouldn’t consider rooting for U$C in Pac-10 games, I do prefer to see all Pac-10 schools beating all other schools in non-conference games. I wanted Oregon to beat Boise, I wanted U$C to beat the Buckeyes, I wanted Stanford to beat Wake.

We gain nothing by rooting against any Pac-10 school playing out of conference. In-conference games are another matter, but I think there clearly are some situations where as Bruins we should prefer U$C to win.

I would add that a pleasant side-effect of USC having a good but not perfect season in 2006 was that our 13-9 victory was all the sweeter, because it cost them a shot at a national championship; and that CRN has spoken about how he wants the LA rivalry game to be meaningful every year between two highly ranked teams competing for a national championship.

good point

I think I agree with you in the short term, while CRN is reestablishing us as a school that can compete for the best talent in LA and the nation. In the longer term, I’d like to see us regularly beat U$C in a game that the whole country is watching because of the National Championship implications for both schools, with alternating shots of CRN bounding around high fiving people and Norm Chow smiling with schadenfreude as Erin Andrews asks Pete Carroll inane questions about how it feels to lose on such a big stage to your archrival…

For what it's worth

and it isn’t worth much, I suppose, I looked at Aaron Murray, one in a long line of really really good quarterbacks to come out of Plant High in Tampa. I watched a lot of his games, and he was as good as anyone I’ve seen, and that includes guys like either Manning. Anyway, whatever scouting service it was had a little feature about who else was on a par with the guy they were spotlighting, and the service identified Brehaut. That’s a long way to go to get to the point that Brehaut must be a really good player.

He has had the benefit of working with Coach Chow (and Coach Neuheisel) for a few months, and I’m confident that he will do a good job when he gets his chance.

You are right!!!!!! Brehaut is a damn good player. And, as you say, working with the two best coaches in the nation – I don’t think we have anything to fear. Someone asked Brehaut if he would like to pass the ball in or run. He said something like, “Do I get to run over anyone if I run it in?”

I think he will be fine. We are lucky to have 4 good QB’s to work with. Get well Prince and Brehaut, Crissman and Craft – GO GET THEM!!!!!!
