Nestor Deserves a Lot of Credit

This has been, perhaps, my favorite week on BN.

From the pregame articles, to the game day thread, to the incredible follow up stories -- I have never been more excited by a body of work in any online community. Hector and 11's posts, and the threads that followed, were works of art -- good writing, good reporting, good humor -- unique contributions.

It seems like we have evolved to a level where our common understanding of what being a citizen here means. I was particularly pleased by a game day thread with many new contributors and almost no personal attacks on our players and coaches. This was a great game day thread. And, the story telling that is showing up in the FanPosts is unique amongst the blogs I visit. Finally, add in the amazing visual contributions -- photo's, video's -- where else can you find stuff like this?

And, for this, Nestor deserves a lot of credit.

Nestor has built a community that demands excellence in content and behavior. And, during this week, the standards have been constantly met or exceeded. It is no small task to draw the line between honest criticism and personal attacks -- but that line has been carefully drawn here to the benefit of us all. And, by his personal example, with all that he posts every day, Nestor makes clear that content is King here. This isn't a place to come and spew crap.

Every once in a while, I visit another site, just to check it out. I'm stunned at what passes for dialogue and content. Some of it is shallow, some mean, much of it snarky drive by posts.

It's the kind of stuff that would not be tolerated here.

I think we can all agree that nothing less than excellence would flow from a base that has either graduated from or become aligned with UCLA.

But, to create a place where so many diverse people come to contribute in such a deep and positive way amazes me.

Perhaps, I am more impressed, today, than I have been for the years I've been here because I'm trying to build a community of my own on a blog I started a couple of months ago. It is really hard work. Much harder than I expected.

Every so often, someone comes here, steps over the line, and then attacks Nestor when he asks that they step back and play nice. Sometimes, the attacks on Nestor are more aggressive or spill beyond our pages. No matter how strong one is, that stings a bit; and no one wants that negative energy in his or her life.

There was a thread last week where that happened. I was going to write a letter of support and appreciation to Nestor and the front pagers but never got around to it.

But, I do think, every so often, we have to say "Thank you" lest you think we take all of this for granted.

We don't. We appreciate this place. And, we appreciate you.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Kudos to 66

for the classy letter. Thank you, thank you Nestor for all you do on this blog. What a great way to unite Bruin fans from all over the world. Thanks for helping us “fill our passion bucket” for everything related to UCLA.

Well said, 66..

indeed, the site is very much improved and runs very smoothly, Nestor. Nice job on the whole. It’s a great pleasure to come to the site and simply read or even contribute in some way. You’ve done a stellar job through and through. And, we’re here to back you up — esp. as Bruin alums and more importantly, as men and women who take pride in lucidity, deep thoughts, and solid writing. Good balance on the whole… hopefully in the end, we’ll all be able to claim a small stake in the comeback of Ucla football and in the perpetuity of UCLA athletics.

Here, here.

I think I read almost every word that gets posted here (as I am sure many others do) and this post has been a long time coming.
Let me simply add my own personal thank you.

Nestor, allow me to be the latest to offer you my personal gratitude for creating something so wonderful and enriching to our lives.

My first and last site

I come to BN first thing in the morning, and last at night (not to mention several times at work…oops). 66, I think you said it best…this is a fantastic community for many reasons. But Nestor has done a great job in encouraging the right kind of contributions. As a matter of fact, all of the moderators do a great job here…so kudos to Ajax, Menelaus, Tydides, Achilles, Meriones, Telemachus, Odysseus, Bellerophon, and ryebreadaz. We all appreciate your effort and PASSION.

by hicalliber on Sep 15, 2009 11:35 PM PDT reply actions

Agreed

The content on the front page alone is reason enough to come here daily, but the community and moderating makes this a must-read. I couldn’t imagine not checking out BN for my UCLA fix.

by gilbert on Sep 15, 2009 11:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah

N keeps BN humming right along. Quality here is perhaps the best amongst the various blogs and the community here is awsome. Other blogs have a different style, for instance the Cal site is like a cross between BN and /b/. That can be amusing too. (If you don’t know what I mean by that, I advise you not to look it up if you are sensitive to depravity of all kinds).

Anyhow, it takes time to do this and I appreciate N’s and the rest of the staff’s time, as well as other contributors who know an awful amount more about football than I do.

Troy will fall.

Well said

And completely agreed. Nestor, thank you for all of the great content and hard work. It is greatly appreciated.

66 - you are giving me way too much/undeserved credit - lol

You know this place is fun and interesting because the perspective, posts, pictures, videos YOU and everyone else bring every day.

We can just go back to those tough days under Karl Dorrell and look back to all the passionate (and sometimes painful) posts that were popping up after dreadful, demoralizing performances.

All I am doing is just keeping things moving as much as I can … because well … it’s kind of fun! (I will stop doing this the day I feel this has become a chore).

well done job by the entire community, but...

The energy and effort that you put forth on a daily basis drives everyone to stay in tuned with the community and share their info/opinions. Good job to all, but a special hand definitely goes to Nestor. Let’s not forget Rye either; he does an excellent job as well. Go Bruinsnation!

I could not agree more

If all he did was mop the floor and put away the food, by providing us with clean facilities, he would be doing us a great, underappreciated service.

His adding of “setting the tone” to his job responsibilities, that is the fostering of quality content and the banning of garbage, would make him a noble yeoman.

But, then to contribute so much, personally, in the way of pre-game analyses, inside scoops, post-game thoughts, and whatever else is “bruin” in his mind, well, he humbles us with such magnanimous gift-giving.

It can’t be said enough, Nestor. Thank you.

the quality of analysis

really is very good here and the focus on facts and reasoned arguments has made me a much better fan in my other sports as well…no other site in my experience has this level of sophistication from the community that is led from the BN frontpagers…

Who is Nestor?

I don’t think I know him.

by Achilles on Sep 16, 2009 10:32 AM PDT reply actions

Thank You!

I always love reading BruinsNation. No other site compares to all of the wonderful information I get from reading BN. I couldn’t imagine all the hard work that everyone puts in to make this such a great blog. I especially love all of the ‘feel good’ posts about UCLA players/events…I haven’t really ever seen articles like that in MSM, except if it is in reference to that OTHER team. I wish the Trojan Times would at least take a peak at what is written here, and acknowledge there is another sports program in Los Angeles.

Thank you to all of the moderators! You guys rock!

Congratulations to Nestor and everybody else who make this site great.

The Nestornater

I wil definitely add my name to the list of thank you’s, but I have a couple of questions:

Does Nestor’s boss know about BN and all of the time Nestor devotes to it?

Is Nestor just one man? Personally, I think there are two or three guys posting under that name.

Seriously though, thanks for all the great work here. We all look forward to reading this site every day.

Whenever I take BN for granted

I only have to remember those dark, dark days of Steve Lavin, when there was no organized voice of the true Bruin conscience, and a 13-year old like me was desperately trying to stir the rich donors sitting around him into some “movement” of horror and rage, just to get a hope, any hope, that something would be done.

It didn’t work. The horror continued as long as it possibly could.

With BN real Bruin fans will never feel so scared and lonesome again.

Thanks Nestor!

I continuously read this blog on my blackberry

throughout the day and consequently don’t post very often as I have a hard time providing any content that I find up to standards from my phone. That said, however, I do feel intimately involved with the life of this blog and I have happily borne witness to its remarkable growth over the last two years. As a recent UCLA grad — and soon to be ex-pat — I hold BN responsible for keeping me connected to my alma mater and reigniting a passion for all things Bruin that I quite frankly lost during my last year in Westwood. For that I remain eternally thankful Nestor.

Your work with this blog is truly about so much more than just athletics – it is a hang-out for UCLA grads in which we can share our experiences and common history; a rare collection of persons whose opinions and perspectives are actually worthwhile. I cannot explain adequately how wonderful it is to have found such a forum and how much it really means to me on a personal level to remain connected to my alma mater. So from me to you, cheers Nestor.

I couldn't agree more...

It took a couple months for me to figure this site out and the flow of things in the comment section. I don’t post too many comments in here, but I have to jump in on this one. Nestor is working hard at this and deserves to have a special place in UCLA sports history. He has my nomination for UCLA Athletics HOF!!!! You should come in with this years class of Cade, Stokes, Metzger, Edney, etc… lol.

Thanks a ton

You're absolutely correct

This is THE site for news on the Bruins and thoughtful conversation about our beloved university. Even though I have rarely posted over the last year (something about work, travel and family taking more time than I have), I relish the pleasure of picking up my blackberry in the morning and reading what’s on Bruinsnation with my first cup of coffee, or when I head out to lunch. The content this week has been incredible and has extended the euphoria of a pleasantly surprising win in Knoxville while I am on a brutal business trip.

Absolutely!!

Nestor is the man!

He puts an amazing amount of work into this site and makes this site an extension of “The Bruin Family.”

Thanks Nestor!

This Site Is The Best....

And Nestor and the gang help make it so. Like 66, I sometimes check out some of the other sites around the country and there isn’t one I’ve seen that comes even close to Bruins Nation that has the passion and class that this site has. Yet another reason why I thank my lucky stars I’m a Bruin.

In many respects this site is amazing.

The professionalism is very evident in the production, variety and content. In this regard I thank NESTOR for his efforts!

Another BRUIN site that had a lot of BROtherly love for the ‘not soon enough’ departed Karl Dorrell accused me of being an irrational BN’er in my criticism of O’l Karl. I didn’t know what the blazes they were talking about, so I went looking for BN and Hence my discovery of "BRUIN NATION.

My one and only disdain for this site stems from the removal of factual respectful posts that have a different POV from “editorializing” that goes on here. When BN injects “Liberal” bias in its content, It should allow respectful dissent. BN does not!

Other than this …BN is terrific!

Agree and disagree

There are people who post here who lean to the left and others who lean to the right. (We had a yell like that in high school, but I digress.) What we all have in common overshadows the political leanings, because we all lean mightily in the direction of Westwood. Those of us who lean one direction are just waiting for those who lean the other way to gain a little enlightenment. Heck, I even find myself agreeing with SilverlakeBruin, and I never thought that would happen. It just shows he’s getting smarter. Or something like that.

You sure jogged my memory with that statement. We had one as well…"

btw...

I really like the Greek surnames of the top brass at BN!
My mother was orphaned at an early age. She was adopted by Greeks in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.
Sophy Derdavenus was her adopted name and what fond memories I have of Yaya and papou! (Grandma and Grandpa!)
And AH..the wonderful smells of exquiste greek cooking.
Over the years we had many greeks visit. In the late 60’s we had Helen Katzanzakis grace our household. (Her husband Nikos wrote "Zorba the Greek!) To this day I treasure the Cookbook she gave us. Many wonderful recipes.

Anywho…it’s a nice touch.

Great Post

Thank’s 66. I think we all thank Nestor in our minds often when we come to our beloved Bruins Nation website. Lke many have posted here, I visit morning afternoon and nite. and at work ( 2nd oops!) on my mobile, which is just great. I would love to start buying up some Bruins Nation shirts and flags etc. This site deserves so much credit for bringing the latest news from our sports teams to bringing support for our fellow Bruin family member’s with real life challenges, a place where they can reach out to other Bruins for support! Thank you Nestor and 66 and all the rest who give us our daily bread. And the need for this board to represent U.C.L.A in the way it is run, with class and integrity. Sometimes I think back to the days of Bruin Gold thinking how lucky I was back then. We have come so far from where we once were, and this blog rivals some of the finest in the country. If you ever need donations for this site to keep going, I would be more than happy to contribute. Wonderful job guys!

Go Bruins!
