[UPDATE: Free Tix 4 Our Firefighters] Official Annoucement From UCLA: Game On Baby!

Okay so they didn't really type that title out but we can have fun here. From UCLA's official release (HT uclafan11):

"Based on the current and projected information regarding conditions at the Rose Bowl provided to us by the AQMD (Air Quality Management District) and Pasadena city officials, including fire and health personnel, and after consultation with our medical staff, we are confirming that the game will be played as scheduled," said UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. "We will continue to monitor the situation in conjunction with city officials in Pasadena and the AQMD."

"Based on recent air quality measurements from a monitor stationed at the Rose Bowl this week and expected weather conditions Saturday, it should be game on for UCLA," said Barry Wallerstein, AQMD Executive Officer.

I have been checking the AQMD website obsessively last 2 days. Just a little while ago Pasadena air quality was categorized as "moderate" downgraded from "unhealthy for sensitive groups." The AQI value also dropped from 117 to 99 this am. It was 135 yesterday and in the 300s just couple of days ago.

So we are on. Might as well make this an open thread for everyone to discuss their tailgating and game watching plans.

GO BRUINS.

UPDATE (N): Yesterday on Meriones suggeseted here on BN:

[S]ince it’s the first game of the season anyway, and our academic year hasn’t started, I’m all for giving free admission to firefighters and public safety workers and/or their families, in case the actual employees are still needed to fight the flames or help the victims.

UCLA just posted this update to their official announcement:

UCLA also announced today that it will offer complimentary tickets to all Southern California Firefighters and their immediate families to the UCLA -San Diego State game this Saturday at 4:30 pm at the Rose Bowl and to the UCLA - Kansas State game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 pm at the Rose Bowl.

To receive tickets, firefighters may show their ID at the Rose Bowl ticket office on game day or at the UCLA Ticket Office in advance of the games.

Well done Morgan Center. GO BRUINS.

Don't know if the wife will allow the kilt...

… but everything else is standard. I’ve had season tix for over a decade, and you gotta love how your local musical instrument store has plenty of wooden or minimal-metal noisemakers that you can bring into various outdoor venues.

Shoot, get a regular squeeze-bulb air horn that would fit on a kids’ bike, pull off the rubber bulb, and blow the horn. Imagine a little plastic kids-party noisemaker multiplied by about 30, and that’s the volume you get.

Seeing UCLA begin its road back to prominence….. PRICELESS

awesome post

The only problem I see with the commencement of the Football season is how awfully long it makes work days seem. I’ve checked BN probably 8 times today already. Consequently, my productivity has taken a nose-dive and is nearing an all-time low. I am just thankful that games are on Saturdays…

Awesome!

Can’t wait for Saturday! I plan on going and bringing my new bride with me (married in the spring).

I am also happy that UCLA is offering the brave firefighters from southern California and their families tickets to the San Diego State game and the Kansas State game. This was suggested in an earlier thread here on BN. Very classy move on the part of the University and the Athletic Department

Thanks!

Why Thank you sir. I’ve been taking my lady two as many games as her schedule would allow the past two years, but this will be her first one as Mrs. RB. She didn’t go to UCLA, but she’s always been a fan, so she’s now a Bruin by marriage!

Gracious gesture by the AD’s office and CTO. Hope those guys can catch a break — whether in the form of cooler weather, a 1/4 inch of rain, favorable winds… or even jsut time with their families to catch a game.

Major props to all our frontliners out there.

And coppers ... get NOTHING.

There are deputies, officers AND chp officers there on the fire, you know?

by Seanny Rotten on Sep 3, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

sorry.

It’s just like the poor coppers are always like Eeyore in these situations. Everyone loves the firefighters and the cops get dumped on.

Nice

Was not looking forward to possibly having Prince and the OLine debut in Knoxville. Saturday can’t come sooner.

Hope the Oregon represents the Pac 2nite @Boise.

Can't wait until Saturday

There’s nothing better than a Saturday at the Rose Bowl and when you add in the fact that it appears our program is ready to take a step forward, HOW CAN YOU NOT BE PUMPED!?!?!?

I’m also going to Knoxville next week so I’d like to see us play a good game and give me some confidence heading to SEC country.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

PUMPED

is an understatement! I couldn’t really get excited until I was sure there was going to be a game and now I can’t wipe the smile off my face! I’ll be in Knoxville too – can’t wait!

GO BRUINS!!!

Knoxville will be a blast

I’ve heard from a few that have been there that it’s an absolutely incredible place to take in a game, but we have a game this Saturday to take care of first.

Shoot me an email sometime next week so we can meet up somewhere in Knoxville. Same goes for anyone else out there making the trip or those at the Rose Bowl. I’d love to meet as many BN’ers as possible and put a face to all those words.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions

It's a AWESOME place

I’ve been to games there 3-4 times. My family has a home there and one of our offices is in Knoxville so I go there often. We will be going to the Bruin Bash pre-game and will be sitting in the UCLA section. I’ll send you an email – it would be great to hook up with other BNers. :)

But yes, let’s take care of the Aztecs first and do it in STYLE! GO BRUINS!!!

First game in a long time....

Well, last game I went to was with Karl leading the helm. Well, time to get back into the fold this Saturday! Go Bruins!

Game on is the best news I’ve heard, thank you firefighters.

For those of you not tailgating

make sure you show up early because UCLA will be doing a bunch of different things to honor the firefighters in attendance and those currently fighting the blaze

Thanks for the heads up

I’ll be inside early to honor them!

Anyone know parking times yet?

Called the CTO and they don’t seem to know yet. I’d like to get there early enough so that I can be set up to watch the OSU/UGA game at 12:30. I assume gates will open early enough, but it’d be nice if they opened at like 11 or so; that way I could be fully settled by then. ;)

by CAJason80 on Sep 3, 2009 1:14 PM PDT reply actions

Found this on UCLA's website

Golf course parking ($15) is available four hours prior to kickoff. Lot H general parking ($15) is located next to the Fan Zone, FoodZone, and reserved tailgating area and opens 10 hours prior to kickoff.

by uclafan11 on Sep 3, 2009 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

$15???

Didn’t this used to be free?

Not free

but I thought it was 10 bucks last year… I could be remembering wrong…

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 2:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Never free...

In the 15 years I’ve had season tickets parking was never free at the Rose Bowl. However, it used to be $5. Also, the buses from Parsons used to be free as well but are $2 i think now…

yeah, it was 10 bux last year

Guess the Rose Bowl folks figured that if the Dodgers can charge 15, so can they.

by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Speaking of Parking

I can’t make the game, but I was thinking of heading down to meet a few friends tailgating. I’m guessing there’s probably only one exit set up prior to the game. Any idea where that might be?

Suggested songs for the UCLA Marching Band to play

Los Angeles is Burning – Bad Religion
“When the hills of Los Angeles are burning
Palm trees are candles in the MURDER wind
So many lives are on the breeze
Even the stars are ill at ease
And Los Angeles is burning”

or maybe:

Burning Down the House
We Didn’t Start the Fire
Burning Love

any other suggestions?

Here's to the first of many RN winning seasons

I have not been this excited about a season in years.

by bluegold on Sep 3, 2009 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

Air Quality? No worries

Our bunch plays U$C every year – meaning that at least once on the schedule they’re playing in high concentrations of Carbon Obnoxide. Our Bruins can deal . . . but sheesh, can we get these games off of FSN West/Prime Ticket and onto a network that all the Cable companies carry?

Bay Area viewing?

Hey everyone,

I’m a recent alum who spent the last year abroad so I missed Bruin football for a year, and I thought the drought would be over but they aren’t broadcasting this game in the Bay for some reason.

Any alternatives to watching the game, like streaming online, or is getting a package from the cable company the only hope?

Thanks for the help!

by bigbwong on Sep 3, 2009 4:28 PM PDT reply actions

Who is your cable company?

I have Direct TV, so I order the sports package, but I think Comcast allows you to order some kind of sports package also that gets you all the FSN’s.

Or else you can head over to the Old Pro in Palo Alto to watch with the Bay Area Bruins.

by freesia39 on Sep 3, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Comcast...

But I’m heading down to LA (hopefully, job search permitting) so I don’t think I’ll be able to convince the parents to get the package for a month. Thanks for the help, do you know of any places in the East Bay that show games or is Palo Alto the only place?

by bigbwong on Sep 3, 2009 6:02 PM PDT up reply actions

Should we

put up a Oregon v Boise State thread to start the season? I’m hoping Oregon pulls it out for the PAC-10, but I’m thinking Boise State wins this one. It will be fun to watch, regardless!
