Special Thursday Night Season Kickoff Open Thread (And Details On UCLA Game Watching Parties)
Looks like few of us are taking in the college football kickoff tonight on WWL. USC just beat up on NC State in a boring 7-3 game. Time for some West Coast ball as Oregon takes on Boise State on Boise's smurf turf. We need to wait less than 48 hours for our guys to get started So here is an open thread to jump start the first college football weekend here on BN.
Also, might as well use this thread to share some quick info on alumni watching parties across the country. Details after the flip.
Here are some of the parties we know off:
- We will start with the Big Apple. Alums in NYC will be watching at "Southern Hospitality" located at 1460 Second Ave., between 76th and 77th Streets.
- Down the I-95, alums in DC will be watching the game at Bar Louie at 701 7th St NW (#D) in Chinatown. Also few alums from DC are heading up for Thursday night's game.
- In Chicago, the Bruins watch their games at Joe's Bar, located at 940 W. Weed St. Here are the details
- Folks in Bay Area have set up three locations to watch the game. They are watching games at the Old Pro sports bar (Palo Alto), The Stadium Pub (East Bay), and the Pete's Tavern (San Francisco) You can get the full details over here.
As always keep in mind - even though the get togethers listed above are hosted by alums - of course, they are open to every member of Bruins Nation. As for the get-togethers listed above those are the ones we know of. For more on alumni club football watching parties visit this site. If you have info on where the alumni group are watching the games in your town, post the info here.
So let's get it started for a special Thursday night kickoff open thread.
GO BRUINS.

Many birds
have met their end on that turf. DUCKS! AVENGE THEM!!!
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
I root for the Pac-10 in non-conference games (except SUC)
We need all the help we can get.
Go Bruins.
Can I not care for the Ducks but still appreciate the Ducks cheerleaders?
I mean..I’m only human.

Ours are still better
have been the past 4 years (Elise)
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Eh
not as bad as in previous years. I am liking the Duck wings. Too bad Bronco Stadium is where many birds go to die.

I agree, Hi
The stink. There is no way to that the guy who ordered those uniforms deserves anything less than a blindfold and a cigarette.
Of course, these stupid uniforms are probably better than any of the others, but they still stink.
Co-sponsor
I half expected Oregon to have their uniforms cosponsored by affliction. Get them nicely bejeweled.
wow!
good play! they made a lot out of that broken play… boise looks good.
<-rooting for the ducks
and thinks boise will win.
heh
they deserved some points there…. Thurmond was playing pretty far off the receiver on that last catch. I wonder how he’ll do tonight.
I hope Neu
gives Thigpen a shot at returning punts or kicks… :)
Ya but
Oregon’s dline is going to be their achiles heel this year I think.
I love US Open Tennis
not because of tennis … but it always means … summer is over and football season has started!
I would go with "because it means 2 weeks of Maria Sharapova on my TV"
But, I suppose that answer works too. :)
They will need to score some points soon
b/c if they don’t have much to show for after domination early on … you know how it goes.
Heh
I just turned on TW… so I’m waiting to see how it turns out.
He's got the same job now at Oregon as
when he was at UCLA
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
I meant to say
he’s doing the same quality of job.
Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.
Always choking in the red zone...
something we have known all to well. Broncos must be livid, it’s a terrible feeling.
YIKES - ugly
comeon guys … let’s get some scoring … I need to go to sleep in next 30-35 mins and I’d like to see a TD or two before going to sleep.
fyi to the gambling minded
the over/under on this game was 66

what do you guys think
of that helmet to helmet rule. I kinda think its part of football.
it's about intent
incidental helmet to helmet contact is fine. but it’s almost impossible to tell if it is or not.
Thomas Jackson III?
Isn’t walter thurmond a III too?
I thought I saw the DB push with his right arm
But I’m watching on a 19" standard def set, so I can’t be trusted for any calls right now.

Are you and the family at home?
Or is Tyler still at the Med Ctr?

No we won't be home for awhile
But the tv in Tyler’s room gets ESPN (and FSW, but not Prime Ticket).
We’re hoping he’ll get out of the hospital before Halloween.

8 yards of O
from Oregon with 7 minutes left in the 2nd? If you would of said that before this started I would of said you were smoking crack.
And 8 points of O.
Gotta love that Aliotti goal-line D.

this game
has a UCLA-BYU feeling to it (and Oregon has Masoli instead of Craft)

There is something about this football season ...
… it feels different (and no I am not expecting 8 wins). But I am feeling vibe I haven’t felt around UCLA football in a long time.
Plus all the stuff going around this community … I knew this place was “real” all along. But it has gone to another level last few days I think.
hah it's showing masoli on the phone
good call.
Chip Kelly discovering ...
this is a little different than coaching in UNH – Holy Cross (or whoever UNH plays).
This is just embarrassing...
How can they drop off this much from their bowl game? It’s not like they monumentally changed their offensive or defensive philosophy. I don’t get it.
They have a lot of
new, but talented guys on the Oline, and their Dline had a big drop off in the off season (I think). It makes me worried about our new but talented guys.
I think
that 3-3-5 is going to give our young offense fits.
Is this UCLA/BYU pt II or Oregon St/Penn St pt II?
If it’s the latter, the Beavers rebounded to have a pretty nice season.

All right guys
Have fun watching rest of the game … see you all in early am (well those of you who are up early).
Ducks … perhaps me signing off … will be good luck charm for you.
GO BRUINS.
Been away most of the night...
Is Oregon really as bad as the stats are saying to this point? Geeze!
So far
They haven’t done a thing on offense, and the defensive line is getting dominated.
Also
You can’t really have zero first downs and not be as bad as the stats say.
by onedeterminedpanda on Sep 3, 2009 9:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I'm getting
confident about our chances against the ducks at home.
Omg that's Ward
their only defensive player making any plays.
Well
I wonder what the vegas ppl are saying about the duck’s chances now?
I don't care what talent you have at skill positions
or in the defensive backfield. If you get whipped on both lines like Oregon is, you’re in trouble.
Which is why
I think Oregon is overrated this year. They could come on strong at the end when their Oline gets it together, but I don’t think their dline is talented enough to get better.
Ya...
I hope Oregon turns this around. I was hoping for a good game tonight.
true, but...
the Pac 10 looking down will hurt SC’s potential NC hopes if they have another one loss season

And then a false start...
I swear, this is so Dorrellian it’s like I am having PTSD.

I've always felt that when Oregon fakes
They are really top notch at it. They always fool the camera guys as well.
That was
a clutch drive for Oregon. They needed that.
Yep. Defense got to rest,
big confidence boost, and also puts some doubt into the Broncos. Excellent.
hah
you can see the future?
Got any lottery numbers for me?
Depends on your phone and carrier
I have mobitv installed on my Palm (also offered for Blackberries, I believe), which is a program that offers some live streaming TV (ESPN, CNN/MSNBC/Fox and a few other networks and specialty stations). Otherwise, I believe that Verizon has an internet/TV package that includes ESPN. Not sure if that is available for all of their phones, or just the higher end stuff.
If you have a slingbox, there is a slingbox mobile phone program that allows you to watch via a 3G connection.
If Oregon
wins this, it’ll be a big time choke by Boise State.
ahh man
that looked like a rookie mistake there.
Weird
looks like the first game of the season for some reason :)
Blount
looks bad tonight. Any one of our top 4 running backs look better than him.
All in all
Oregon is just appearing average to below average. It’s really across the board. They are lucky Boise St. is gassing out a little.
Wow...a two man rush, and it gets through
by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 9:58 PM PDT reply actions
ya that was a good job
for the ducks. Except for the clip.
The Oregon Oline
let like 5 guys through on that sack… I wonder if they were setting up a screen.
Would like to hear opinions b/c wasn't able to see most of game...
1. Oregon took a bad 1st game and will be fine after “working out the kinks”
2. Boise St. is just that good
3. Oregon is overrated and UCLA/Pac-10 could consider the game “winnable” (not saying should but could….)
I'd say
3. Both Oregon lines need a lot of work and TJ Ward got hurt tonight (not sure what the prognosis is.) Boise state is good, but I don’t think they’re as good as it looks tonight.
but
they could improve the Oline play with some work I think. Technique and reads aren’t all that hot.
Not 2. this was Oregon's fault.
I want to say 3. because, well, they have looked average at best all game. It’s not just one thing, it’s failures on multiple levels. Also, it’s their lines that are the real problem… So I’m going with 3. At home, if we play up to where we can… winnable.
Thanks guys....
apparently, Boise St. fans agree – there’s the chant…
by Nakatomi Plaza on Sep 3, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions
hah.
I think Oregon state is the other overrated team.
"Over-rated"...my least favorite chant in college sports

Stanford
UCLA and an Arizona School are going to move up the ladder this year.
Embarrassing for both schools
Moreso for Oregon, obviously, but Boise St didn’t exactly handle the game w/ class either.
by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions
I can't believe that!
Seriously. He needs to be out of college football for a long time. That was a weak cheap shot.
While that douche in the blue headband
needs to keep his hands to himself. That was classless by Blount.
I would love to know what coach Peterson was saying to the dude that got clocked

Also, to the people in charge of Smurf stadium seating
Maybe putting the student body on the field next to the visiting locker isn’t the best idea.
by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:29 PM PDT reply actions
That's not the student section
It’s just general admission seating so I’d guess that students who don’t get student seats buy those.

I know I'm just chatting w/ myself now
But I wonder if the Pac 10 commish was still around for that?
by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:36 PM PDT reply actions
Just like Aboya at UW
He’ll probably say the Boise St. guy jumped into Blount’s fist…
There's a new commissioner
so hopefully there’s more control and reason.
I’d like him to speak to Oregon first and allow them to dole out punishment, but if Oregon is unwilling to punish Blount or their punishment doesn’t go far enough, then it’s time for him to step in.
by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Yeah I agree
It will be interesting to see how far Oregon takes the punishment if given the opportunity to do so. He’s obviously had disciplinary problems in the past so i doubt they can chalk this up to a lapse in character.
Classless anytime you take a swing...
but then to go Mike Tyson/Clubber Lang crazy near the fan section shows absoulutley no restraint or smarts. Embarrassing beyond imagine for Oregon – game and extracirricular afterwards.
Have fun Chip!
Free Brandon Wood!
I'll fan shot it and front page it
so take all talk about the incident there.

Zeros on their helmets?
Watching the replay on ESPN360.com,
The Oregon helmets have zeros on them!
From what they showed tonight they got nuthin’. Their D = disoriented.
That doesn’t mean Boysy State is any good either. They have a soft schedule. If the Zeros prove to be weak this year then this game will mean less to Boysy State’s rep.
Both teams looked cruddy, O stank but BS only scored 19.
