Special Thursday Night Season Kickoff Open Thread (And Details On UCLA Game Watching Parties)

Photo Credit: Photography By Ruben's photostream (flickr)

Looks like few of us are taking in the college football kickoff tonight on WWL. USC just beat up on NC State in a boring 7-3 game. Time for some West Coast ball as Oregon takes on Boise State on Boise's smurf turf. We need to wait less than 48 hours for our guys to get started So here is an open thread to jump start the first college football weekend here on BN.

Also, might as well use this thread to share some quick info on alumni watching parties across the country. Details after the flip.

Star-divide

Here are some of the parties we know off:

  • We will start with the Big Apple. Alums in NYC will be watching at "Southern Hospitality" located at 1460 Second Ave., between 76th and 77th Streets.
  • Down the I-95, alums in DC will be watching the game at Bar Louie at 701 7th St NW (#D) in Chinatown.  Also few alums from DC are heading up for Thursday night's game.
  • In Chicago, the Bruins watch their games at Joe's Bar, located at 940 W. Weed St. Here are the details
  • Folks in Bay Area have set up three locations to watch the game. They are watching games at the Old Pro sports bar (Palo Alto), The Stadium Pub (East Bay), and the Pete's Tavern (San Francisco) You can get the full details over here.

As always keep in mind - even though the get togethers listed above are hosted by alums - of course, they are open to every member of Bruins Nation. As for the get-togethers listed above those are the ones we know of. For more on alumni club football watching parties visit this site. If you have info on where the alumni group are watching the games in your town, post the info here.

So let's get it started for a special Thursday night kickoff open thread.

GO BRUINS.

Not sure if I am rooting for Ducks

I am pretty disinterested in who wins this game.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't know

I have never really cared much for Oregon.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

after the KLove fiasco

can’t blame any Bruin.

Go Bruins.

by hicalliber on Sep 3, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

and that wasn't the first time

UCLA was subjected to that kind of treatment up in Eugene.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree,

that field is quite an eye sore. It hurts just looking at it – hopefully it’ll get better as time goes on.

Those duck uniforms...

…are the real abomination ;)

Go Bruins.

by hicalliber on Sep 3, 2009 7:29 PM PDT reply actions

Eh

not as bad as in previous years. I am liking the Duck wings. Too bad Bronco Stadium is where many birds go to die.

Oh UCLA you sweet bitch, you've BRUINed me for anything else.

by bruin8uclap on Sep 3, 2009 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree, Hi

The stink. There is no way to that the guy who ordered those uniforms deserves anything less than a blindfold and a cigarette.

Of course, these stupid uniforms are probably better than any of the others, but they still stink.

by Fox 71 on Sep 3, 2009 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Co-sponsor

I half expected Oregon to have their uniforms cosponsored by affliction. Get them nicely bejeweled.

by EdtheBruin on Sep 3, 2009 8:39 PM PDT up reply actions

wow!

good play! they made a lot out of that broken play… boise looks good.

Masoli

Looked pretty mediocre in that first drive.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I went to a friends to watch the game

and his cable went out :(, so I missed the first drive lol.

yikes

16 play drive for 0 points. lol

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:35 PM PDT reply actions

heh

they deserved some points there…. Thurmond was playing pretty far off the receiver on that last catch. I wonder how he’ll do tonight.

only if TA struggles

but i agree…can’t wait to see the lil speedster

Go Bruins.

Nice completion there

I like the pocket presence of this Boise State QB.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 7:44 PM PDT reply actions

something we have known all to well. Broncos must be livid, it’s a terrible feeling.

YIKES - ugly

comeon guys … let’s get some scoring … I need to go to sleep in next 30-35 mins and I’d like to see a TD or two before going to sleep.

what do you guys think

of that helmet to helmet rule. I kinda think its part of football.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions

so I

don’t like it much.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

RIGHT

That replay of the hie on Masoli was WICKED. They could really get hurt so I’m ok with it.

by uclafan11 on Sep 3, 2009 8:01 PM PDT up reply actions

it's about intent

incidental helmet to helmet contact is fine. but it’s almost impossible to tell if it is or not.

There is something about this football season ...

… it feels different (and no I am not expecting 8 wins). But I am feeling vibe I haven’t felt around UCLA football in a long time.

Plus all the stuff going around this community … I knew this place was “real” all along. But it has gone to another level last few days I think.

How can they drop off this much from their bowl game? It’s not like they monumentally changed their offensive or defensive philosophy. I don’t get it.

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

They have a lot of

new, but talented guys on the Oline, and their Dline had a big drop off in the off season (I think). It makes me worried about our new but talented guys.

and this is why I am thanful

It will be interesting to see how we handle their element of surprise.

by Nestor on Sep 3, 2009 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Is this UCLA/BYU pt II or Oregon St/Penn St pt II?

If it’s the latter, the Beavers rebounded to have a pretty nice season.

So far

They haven’t done a thing on offense, and the defensive line is getting dominated.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 9:12 PM PDT reply actions

I don't care what talent you have at skill positions

or in the defensive backfield. If you get whipped on both lines like Oregon is, you’re in trouble.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 9:16 PM PDT reply actions

Which is why

I think Oregon is overrated this year. They could come on strong at the end when their Oline gets it together, but I don’t think their dline is talented enough to get better.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 9:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Ya...

I hope Oregon turns this around. I was hoping for a good game tonight.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Plus

Having a potential top Pac-10 get mauled by a WAC team is not going to help our image one bit

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

true, but...

the Pac 10 looking down will hurt SC’s potential NC hopes if they have another one loss season

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

big confidence boost, and also puts some doubt into the Broncos. Excellent.

WOWOWOW

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 9:35 PM PDT reply actions

Depends on your phone and carrier

I have mobitv installed on my Palm (also offered for Blackberries, I believe), which is a program that offers some live streaming TV (ESPN, CNN/MSNBC/Fox and a few other networks and specialty stations). Otherwise, I believe that Verizon has an internet/TV package that includes ESPN. Not sure if that is available for all of their phones, or just the higher end stuff.

If you have a slingbox, there is a slingbox mobile phone program that allows you to watch via a 3G connection.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 9:51 PM PDT reply actions

Oregon is just appearing average to below average. It’s really across the board. They are lucky Boise St. is gassing out a little.

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 9:52 PM PDT reply actions

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 10:10 PM PDT reply actions

Would like to hear opinions b/c wasn't able to see most of game...

1. Oregon took a bad 1st game and will be fine after “working out the kinks”
2. Boise St. is just that good
3. Oregon is overrated and UCLA/Pac-10 could consider the game “winnable” (not saying should but could….)

by Nakatomi Plaza on Sep 3, 2009 10:13 PM PDT reply actions

I'd say

3. Both Oregon lines need a lot of work and TJ Ward got hurt tonight (not sure what the prognosis is.) Boise state is good, but I don’t think they’re as good as it looks tonight.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 10:15 PM PDT reply actions

but

they could improve the Oline play with some work I think. Technique and reads aren’t all that hot.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 10:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Not 2. this was Oregon's fault.

I want to say 3. because, well, they have looked average at best all game. It’s not just one thing, it’s failures on multiple levels. Also, it’s their lines that are the real problem… So I’m going with 3. At home, if we play up to where we can… winnable.

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 10:16 PM PDT reply actions

Thanks guys....

apparently, Boise St. fans agree – there’s the chant…

by Nakatomi Plaza on Sep 3, 2009 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

hah.

I think Oregon state is the other overrated team.

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

You can't chant overrated,

when you’re the higher ranked team. It comes off as just dumb.

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 10:21 PM PDT reply actions

by captainqtp on Sep 3, 2009 10:22 PM PDT reply actions

Moreso for Oregon, obviously, but Boise St didn’t exactly handle the game w/ class either.

by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:26 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't believe that!

by dproduct on Sep 3, 2009 10:26 PM PDT reply actions

Maybe putting the student body on the field next to the visiting locker isn’t the best idea.

by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:29 PM PDT reply actions

That's not the student section

It’s just general admission seating so I’d guess that students who don’t get student seats buy those.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 10:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I know I'm just chatting w/ myself now

But I wonder if the Pac 10 commish was still around for that?

by insomniacslounge on Sep 3, 2009 10:36 PM PDT reply actions

If He Was...

He needs to take immediate action.

by jawsbruin on Sep 3, 2009 10:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Just like Aboya at UW

He’ll probably say the Boise St. guy jumped into Blount’s fist…

by UclaBruin47 on Sep 3, 2009 10:46 PM PDT reply actions

There's a new commissioner

so hopefully there’s more control and reason.

I’d like him to speak to Oregon first and allow them to dole out punishment, but if Oregon is unwilling to punish Blount or their punishment doesn’t go far enough, then it’s time for him to step in.

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Sep 3, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I agree

It will be interesting to see how far Oregon takes the punishment if given the opportunity to do so. He’s obviously had disciplinary problems in the past so i doubt they can chalk this up to a lapse in character.

by jawsbruin on Sep 3, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Classless anytime you take a swing...

but then to go Mike Tyson/Clubber Lang crazy near the fan section shows absoulutley no restraint or smarts. Embarrassing beyond imagine for Oregon – game and extracirricular afterwards.

Have fun Chip!

Zeros on their helmets?

Watching the replay on ESPN360.com,
The Oregon helmets have zeros on them!
From what they showed tonight they got nuthin’. Their D = disoriented.
That doesn’t mean Boysy State is any good either. They have a soft schedule. If the Zeros prove to be weak this year then this game will mean less to Boysy State’s rep.
Both teams looked cruddy, O stank but BS only scored 19.
