Around SBN: Knicks 90, Raptors 87: "Shump and Lin wouldn't let us lose."

"(Carroll) had an open-field run," Neuheisel said. "And now we hope to close that field. We have to seize the opportunity."

Maybe then the football monopoly really will be over.

This is the part that kills me.
No team, or coach, benefits more from Pete Carroll’s departure at USC than cross-town rival UCLA. Like it or not — fair or not — one man’s loss in another’s recruiting haul.

The Kool Aid drinkers (OK, sister in law) are already nay saying our future wins by saying it is only because of Cheat Carroll’s departure that we will make any headway against South Central. Of course, with this sort of selective Amnesia, the 90s completely escapes their flawless logic.

Your reply

if y’all didn’t cheat, you wouldn’t have accomplished squat. But it’s ok, this will be fixed shortly.

Gaining ground...

If CRN and UCLA weren’t already aggresively going after these players, we wouldn’t benefit at all. Last two years of laying the groundwork is paying off, hopefully these are the players that will help launch the next great UCLA run. Best part is, hopefully our coach has learned from the past, and hopefully will keep things on track for a long time.

It is pretty easy to acknowledge

that the fortunes of the 2 programs have tended to be inversely proportional over the last 30 years or so.

Neuheisel has been afforded a golden opportunity to take a stranglehold of the area and this rivalry and put our program back on top.

We cannot accept our program languishing in mediocrity for the next 3 to 5 years; we need to “make a move” right now.

two years

We need a winning record in Pac-10 season and then make our run the yea after.

by Nestor on Jan 11, 2010 6:28 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

8-9 wins next season. I think those are reasonable expectations.

9 wins is likely a bit high

The Bruins have what looks to be the toughest schedule in the nation (top-5 easily) next season. Figure a 2-1 non-conference record is a fair possibility (I doubt we pull off the win @ Texas). After that, we would need to pull off a 7-2 record in the Pac-10 to hit 9 wins; Bruins run the table at the Rose Bowl and win at least 2 away conference games: @ Oregon, @ Cal, @ UW, @ ASU. I don’t see next year’s team as being quite ready to pull that off.

Yep

I think the goal for next season here will be a winning record in the Pac-10 next season. I think the win total out of that mix will keep the momentum heading into the following season.

Maybe we would have to over-achieve, but why not?

Our young team is a year older, and they’ll have more confidence. Our coaching staff will have more confidence in them, too. We lose great players, but we may just have a great player or two coming in to fill in those gaps.

I think as important as anything else is the change of mentality. I don’t care what was said in the past, our guys sort of expected to lose (and who can blame them when the coaching staff played it that way.) Now, they see that we were in every game, and a break or two would have made this our break out season. Plus they won seven games. I think they’re thinking like winners now.

The fact that just$c* is circling the toilet bowl isn’t going to hurt the mental part of the game for our guys, either.

Again, we get to the age-old question of expectation versus (can’t remember the way it was phrased – expectation versus mortification or purification. It was some other kind of ation.) Anyway, do I expect us to win 9 games? I don’t know. Do I hope we win 9 games? Sure, and I think it’s possible. We’ll have to win some games that we’re not supposed to win. Under the old regime, we conceded those games. Under this regime, we don’t.

Factoring a bowl win

a 2-1 nonconference record and a 6-3 Pac 10 mark. Also I wouldn’t be so quick to write off Texas as a loss….I think they will be a bit down next year. I’ve just got a feeling.

Taking into account that this is Neu’s 3rd year and what other coaches have been able to do at other programs in that span, I just think our expectations should be at that level, IMO.

How the team plays

will be just as important as the win-loss record next year.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
