Has Shelley Smith given an on-air apology yet? Let's demand it from BSPN
Bumped up. If folks are sending in their notes, please make sure to note that in comment threads. Thanks. GO BRUINS. -N
If we make enough noise, ESPN will at least think a second time before running stories such as this. It counts as a major breakdown in journalistic integrity and method.
E-mail ESPN and demand an on-air apology from Shelley Smith. Follow the link.
Or, cut n'paste: http://proxy.espn.go.com/espn/contact
If you're too lazy to write your own email, then cut and paste the following (text shortened to fit within 500 characters per britishbruin's suggested edits in the comment thread, BN):
Dear ESPN:
I was disappointed you allowed Shelley Smith (with known USC ties) to report the Norm Chow-to-USC story without any balance, fact-checking or due diligence. Your organization abandoned journalistic integrity for the hype of a developing story, which makes me question whether ANY of the information you report is true.
I demand an immediate on-air retraction from Shelley Smith and all other persons responsible for disseminating this story widely across ESPN’s media platforms.
Sincerely,
Blue and gold.
Again, here is the link to contact BSPN.
UPDATE (N): You guys can also contact ESPN's ombudsman about this over here. Fire away folks. GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

1. That message won’t fit in the 500 characters
2. we might want to address messages to the Ombudsman

as he might actually write something up about this.
this leaves a few characters to play with, for people to add their own color...

[but I think the ombudsman email route allows people to wax more lyrical about the issue]

no problem
emailed the Ombudsman and suggested we could provide further background if he wants it…

It might work
Let me look outside and see if there are pigs flying over my house.
Everyone that sends an email should check in here
I just sent mine, and was cut off before I could fully “speak my mind.” Thought it might be interesting to know how many BN folks send the emails so we could gauge “pressure” on ESPN to do something. I agree with Fox 71 that those pigs will be airborne before we get an apology, but at least we are trying to be heard and change their M.O.

I just sent my message to the ombudsman.
Sent.
i will add that while on the ESPN site filling out their comments page. I was navigating through the various pull down menus which narrow down the topic of the complaint.
When I got to the pull down menu to select which of their on air talent i was complaining about, Shelley Smith was not listed. hmmm,

Vol Nation is well aware of their lack of objectivity...
Anyone remember when Charles Woodson won the Heisman? ESPN and ABC did as much on-air lobbying and cheerleading as possible for him.
Perhaps it was because Woodson played in the Big 10 (airing on ABC), and the certain well-known UT quarterback he wound up beating played in games aired by CBS.
Anyway, your newfound allies against U$C over on Rocky Top are well aware of their BS.
(P.S.: What’s the preferred shorthand over here to refer to the University of $poiled Cheaters? Personally, I prefer USuCk, but I know y’all have a lot more experience hating them…) :)

I use just$c*
One of our basketball players referred to them as “justsc.”
The dollar sign is self-explanatory
I put it in lower case all the time, because they’re not worthy of capital letters.
The asterisk commemorates their claim of a national championship trophy which in fact sits in a trophy case at LSU.
But there are lots of other things to use. I’m sure others will chip in with their favorites.

also signifies their alleged claim as a university (please do a search on senora ross for an example), similar to the asterisk that denotes fraudulent sports records (Bonds, BigMac, etc). They do not deserve a U, and it has been removed.
And darthubba, we here became your allies after the unanimous reports of the incredibly classy treatment that every Bruin who went to Knoxville last fall received. Now that that cancer is removed from your football program, we have zero reservations about ever supporting y’all.

Greg, I’m glad y’all had a great experience in Knoxville last fall. I know some of our fans can be…um…less than gracious to supporters of visiting teams, particularly after a loss. (Although this tends to happen more often with SEC opponents, especially hated rivals like Florida and Alabama.)
But I will admit, I pretty much didn’t give a damn about just$c* until this week. I certainly wasn’t a fan, but I was more indifferent to them than anything else. That all changed about 7:30pm Central time Tuesday night. Now they are about even with the Gaytors on my hate meter. So that’s what I meant by ‘newfound allies’.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
I’ve mentioned before that most Bruins were really in a pickle. We had the utmost respect and admiration for the Vols, and then you hired this punk. We wanted to tell you that you had just gotten married to a $20 a trick hooker and were taking her home to meet your mom and dad, but that created a problem.
Lame left you in bad shape in terms of recruiting and getting a head coach (more on that in a second), but none of that is as important as the fact that he left you. His departure will be recognized soon as another highlight in Volunteer football history.
I think you will be more than satisified with your new coach. You’re not getting someone who has never been a college head coach. You’re getting someone who geographically understands the South and the SEC (something Lame simply could never hope to do.) I’m willing to bet something (not exactly sure what) that Tennessee’s record next year is better than 7-6.
Anyway, come by any time. And if you’re looking for a laugh, go check out conquest comicals. They like Lame over there (or at least some of them do.) You’re always welcome here, brother Bubba.
Ombundsman
While I sent a comment to them I wonder if they care. They still think all B-Ball is only in the ACC and that Tony kornheiser and woody Paige still have relevance. Let’s hope for once they realize that all sports west of the Mississippi revolves around $uc

my email
Mr Ohlmeyer,
I was very disappointed with Shelley Smith’s overzealous reporting of Norm Chow’s potential move to USC. If sports journalism is to be take seriously, there must be some semblance of journalistic integrity. I understand that in this day and age of the 24-hour news cycle there will be a rush to disseminate information, but there should be an expectation that the journalist practiced due diligence in confirming the veracity of the report. This due diligence is what separates a real news outlet from the likes of TMZ and the National Enquirer. Sometimes news outlets get the reports wrong, but those are the moments integrity compels the outlet to rectify its mistakes. Ms. Smith should apologize on-air for the sake of her credibility and ESPN’s.
Mine...
Dear ESPN,
The premature and unfactual reports by Shelley Smith, who has known ties to USC, of the Norm Chow-to-USC story were very disappointing. Smith’s irresponsible and reckless work was bad journalism at best, and malicious propaganda at worst. Inaccurate reporting damages the subjects, and your network’s credibity. As an influential media outlet, you have an obligation to be fair and factual. Therefore, Smith’s work was unacceptable.
UCLA, Chow, and your audience deserve an apology from Ms. Smith.
