USC Trojans at UCLA Bruins, Jan 16, 2010 4:30 PM PST

It always starts with DEFENSE. Photo Credit: E. Corpuz

Here we go. Bruins tip off against the Trojans in about half an hour at Pauley. If the Bruins are going to win this game today and not replicate previous Saturday disappointments, they will have to do with defense and patience on offense. Also, they will have to limit giving up second chance  opportunities to a woeful Trojan shooting team as much as possible.

For more on our notes here is the game page. The game is going to be televised on Prime Ticket. The good news is that Don MacLean will be providing the analysis during the broadcast. As always, I am really looking forward to hearing not only Don's color commentary but his reflections on our basketball team as well. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site.

As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.

GO BRUINS.

Focus and Intensity early will be key

I have a fear that we will get blown out of the water in the first 5 minutes and be down double digits early. If we can avoid that blitz early, I think we can ride our crowd to a victory playing smart consistent basketball.

They gave out blue shirts to the 100 and 200 level sidelines and 100 level behind the baskets, but most who didn’t show up in blue aren’t putting them on

Who are these people?

Do they love losing? Do they have a secret passion to destroy Coach Wooden’s program? Drago is easily to most undisciplined UCLA player ever. Not only is he bad, he makes his teammates worse. Watch Drago off the ball and ask yourself ‘How is what he’s doing helping?’.

On offense he stands around and takes bad off balance shots. He should never dribble before he shoots; it only makes his shot worse.

On defense he is so bad he is the 6th player on the other team’s offense. He screens out his teammates. Covers the wrong man. Leaves his man to come halfway and get beaten.

Abdul Hamid

appears to run the point better than JA/ML.

Getting nothing – shooting-wise or passing-wise – from ND/MR. Both of them getting abused by more athletic players defensively.

RN working hard but not big enough to go against those bigs by himself, and not savvy enough to be in the right position ahead of time.

DMac has that right ...

Looking at the numbers, it’s incredible we’re only down 12.

looks like are defense is getting more tenacious

We are playing zone

which Howland didn’t go to until we fell behind by double digits.

by Nestor on Jan 16, 2010 5:43 PM PST up reply actions

never does

that way he can blame the loss on the zone and point to that as the reason he doesn’t use it.

I charted the first half

We didn’t go zone until we fell behind by 6-15.

Silly Foul by Nelson

That elbow against ‘Furd probably doesn’t improve his standing with the refs any either.

by snorkeldorf on Jan 16, 2010 5:43 PM PST reply actions

Strange thing about taht elbow

I really don’t think anyone @ Maples actually saw it. No sort of negative reaction to that play, besides the typical “left, right, sit down” that the students give to fouled out players (that had been reeves’ 5th). If anything, the fans were annoyed that play was stopped for the review, and confused by the resulting technical call.

Agreed

But I’m guessing a foul like that puts him on the PAC-10 ref’s “watch more closely” list.

Bad miss ...

it’s one thing if it’s close, but misses like those are alarming.

MR hits....

may this be the start of something good

My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.

Howland is losing the room

around him which he built up through his 3 Final-4 runs. We are going to see more of this through rest of the season. It will be disgraceful. He will be on the hot seat next season and just getting into the tourney will not be good enogh next season.

This is all on Howland.

UConn women are about to start on ESPN

Probably more athleticism and strength thna if I stay on our game

Does UCLA know how to run a decent set?

Is this just tremendous defense or are we absolutely pathetic. Either we take bad shots or force the ball inside. If we try to run a set it ends up simply running the clock and in the end someone has to take a desperation clock beater.

Lee's Game isn't as a 3-pt Shooter

His late heroics against ND are coming back to haunt us now.

Worst UCLA team in a decade?

Yeah, yeah, my first post. Was trying to focus on the game, but can’t with this dismal performance. Can anyone put some perspective on how bad this team is? When was the last time that we were this awful?

by hongerelli on Jan 16, 2010 6:03 PM PST reply actions

'02-03

Lavin’s last team. The following year really wasn’t much better, and did seem to give up late in the year. Maybe the fact that Lavin was gone simply made it seem better than it was at the time (03-04, that is)

I Miss having a Center

Are we going to redshirt Moser and Stover? If not, it’s probably time to give them some minutes.

by snorkeldorf on Jan 16, 2010 6:09 PM PST reply actions

has anderson played this half?

this is pretty bad for him, benched for the walk on

by realfabfive on Jan 16, 2010 6:12 PM PST reply actions

well roll still has good moments most games

just has been sloppy and weak on d

anderson already lost his starting spot, maybe howland sees more flaws in what he’s doing out there than dragovic? a point guard that can barely bring the ball up the floor is harder to keep out there than a very very streaky shooting forward

Losing seasons in the last 7 decades at UCLA

1940-41: 6-20 (2-10)
1941-42: 5-18 (2-10)
1945-46: 8-16 (5-7)
1947-48: 12-13 (3-9)
-
2002-3: 10-19 (7-13)
2003-4: 11-17 (7-12)

Where does this season stand in comparison?

+99

We are playing really, really badly today. But the Pac-10 is a model of mediocrity and, by extension, parity.

by britishbruin on Jan 16, 2010 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

Basing it on current standings.

Hopefully we can have a nice win streak, not looking good though.

by Bruin'96 on Jan 16, 2010 6:18 PM PST up reply actions

nah

99% sure his choice was b/c of money. Don’t think he could care less about college ball.

by Bruin'96 on Jan 16, 2010 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

I might get heat for this one but

have we become the Notre Dame of College Basketball. We have’t done too much with the amount of talent we’ve had. Those final fours were great but we should have won the NC with Love. 5 star players and recruiting classes the last decade were plentiful but there is no reason for our play.
