Center Court: Ben Ball (Southern Cal) Open Thread
USC Trojans at UCLA Bruins, Jan 16, 2010 4:30 PM PST
Here we go. Bruins tip off against the Trojans in about half an hour at Pauley. If the Bruins are going to win this game today and not replicate previous Saturday disappointments, they will have to do with defense and patience on offense. Also, they will have to limit giving up second chance opportunities to a woeful Trojan shooting team as much as possible.
For more on our notes here is the game page. The game is going to be televised on Prime Ticket. The good news is that Don MacLean will be providing the analysis during the broadcast. As always, I am really looking forward to hearing not only Don's color commentary but his reflections on our basketball team as well. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site.
As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Focus and Intensity early will be key
I have a fear that we will get blown out of the water in the first 5 minutes and be down double digits early. If we can avoid that blitz early, I think we can ride our crowd to a victory playing smart consistent basketball.
UCLA '08
would be surprised for anything to happen quickly
$C doesn’t score well enough for us to be down double digits early.

Been watching Wash U
Looks like they are getting their act together.
Didn’t think they’d be in last place too long.
The student section almost full
Easily the fullest it had been this year and the atmosphere is best it has been this year.
They gave out blue shirts to the 100 and 200 level sidelines and 100 level behind the baskets, but most who didn’t show up in blue aren’t putting them on

I was thinking the same thing
If I were CRN I wouldn’t have brought those guys to watch these clowns.
Roll misses an easy 7 footer
Drag 0-2. Way to go seniors.
Does this team
have any idea how to get the ball inside? Why The F*dge do I have to watch 15 seconds of passing around the perimeter?

why's JK playing?
nice no effort after loose ball
Does Drago really 'play' defense
or is he just kind of on the floor when the opposite team has possession?
It looks like someone put vasaline on the ball...

How is Ben Howland not going
CRN on Kevin Craft right now? Give me some sort of vicarious satisfaction at least….
Bruins getting humiliated and destroyed
Down 4-15. Players going through the motions like bunch of quitters as if they have tuned out the coach.
I am totally embarrassed!
They can’t shoot. Hell, they look like a bad girls basketball team shooting the ball. Bricks that don’t hit rim? Are you kidding. They can’t beat anyone off the dribble. Keefe wouldn’t be a McDonalds all-american now, let along 4 years ago.
finally
nice pass by Roll to RN cutting, fouled going to the basket
Roll gives up in middle of 3, keefe has his 3 blocked

Note 3 straight defensive stops
since we got in the zone. Begs the questions why didn’t Howland go to this early?
good question...
maybe trying to play aggressive defense and get some steals to start the offense; our half court offense looks horrible…?
However, given how we run the fast break, there may be no advantage to getting steals…

going to be a tough night, unless SC relaxes a bit
What have they been practicing
the past week? Honestly. We have no athletism. Roll, Drag, and Keefe………..any way to move up graduation to this week? If they are going to play like this, just play all the young guys. Moser, Stover, etc. All of them. At least they would get experience. This is the worst I have seen the Bruins play since the Lavin days. I feel like I am in a time warp and went back to the Lavin days. Sorry fellas, but they play like that……but with 1/2 the athletism.

i don't understand why anderson is in the game?

Painful, painful stuff, but it’s not terribly surprising — we’re being outhustled by a more athletic squad.

No sheeat. Our team sucks.

I'm really glad the team worked on eliminating turnovers all week.
Clearly all those sprints worked wonders with our boys. If they keep it up, maybe they can equal the total number of turnovers they committed in the Bay Area last week in just one game against USC.
Why should they care and play hard
when their head coach waste mins on clowns like ND and other seniors who have no hear and show no effrt.
exactly right
I’ve been saying this all year. This is the effect of coddling certain players over others and having different standards for seniors than your other players.

by Bruin Dad and Grad on Jan 16, 2010 5:24 PM PST via mobile reply actions
they have no value on the court
drago – no heart on D, no heart on Rebounds, no toughness, can chuck the ball
roll – some heart, too slow to play D, too short to reb, too slow to get the shot off
Watch he will hit 3 3s in the second half
But give up 17 points. But all his supporters will say but he GOT HOT!
Who are these people?
Do they love losing? Do they have a secret passion to destroy Coach Wooden’s program? Drago is easily to most undisciplined UCLA player ever. Not only is he bad, he makes his teammates worse. Watch Drago off the ball and ask yourself ‘How is what he’s doing helping?’.
On offense he stands around and takes bad off balance shots. He should never dribble before he shoots; it only makes his shot worse.
On defense he is so bad he is the 6th player on the other team’s offense. He screens out his teammates. Covers the wrong man. Leaves his man to come halfway and get beaten.
Seriously the people who defende Drago for his "shooting" on BN
will sound more and more like Dorrelistas in their later years.
some of the worst shooting decisions this season
last shot wasn’t his fault, but the off-balance fadeaway 3s were not just poor execution, they were horrible decisions

Besides RN, our guys just don't look like they like to compete.
I don’t understand how some of them got to this level with no desire. It just doesn’t look like it hurts them when they are getting beaten. RN is the only guy out there who looks like he would kill to beat his man.
Abdul Hamid
appears to run the point better than JA/ML.
Getting nothing – shooting-wise or passing-wise – from ND/MR. Both of them getting abused by more athletic players defensively.
RN working hard but not big enough to go against those bigs by himself, and not savvy enough to be in the right position ahead of time.

Strange thing about taht elbow
I really don’t think anyone @ Maples actually saw it. No sort of negative reaction to that play, besides the typical “left, right, sit down” that the students give to fouled out players (that had been reeves’ 5th). prior to derrick rose, memphis played without a true PG they still rocked college
they played with speed and constant motion… unlike us, stagnant
has anderson played this half?
this is pretty bad for him, benched for the walk on
well roll still has good moments most games
just has been sloppy and weak on d
anderson already lost his starting spot, maybe howland sees more flaws in what he’s doing out there than dragovic? a point guard that can barely bring the ball up the floor is harder to keep out there than a very very streaky shooting forward

I might get heat for this one but
have we become the Notre Dame of College Basketball. We have’t done too much with the amount of talent we’ve had. Those final fours were great but we should have won the NC with Love. 5 star players and recruiting classes the last decade were plentiful but there is no reason for our play.
