Four Letter Redemption Game Thread- WBB vs. SC

Coach Nikki Caldwell has a team to be proud of. She also makes for outstanding photography. Photo Credit: E. Corpuz

There's no doubt about it that yesterday, CBH's boys embarrassed the four letters. Losing happens, but it is the manner in which we lose and the seeming lack of direction that CBH that is unacceptable. Luckily for us, we have one basketball coach who is getting things done the right way. Yeah, it's Coach Nikki Caldwell, whose Bruins are 10-5 and 3-1 in the Pac-10 as they head across town to take on USC in a huge Pac-10 game. According to our resident women's basketball expert, truebluebruin24, it's the USC and Oregon games that are biggest if we want to make the postseason so you bet bet this one will be a thriller.

By all accounts, CNC's Bruins are getting things done the Ben Ball way. They're tough on defense and don't give away anything cheap. They battle for every loose ball and don't leave anything on the court. They really do everything that should make you proud to watch the blue and gold. The game tips at 2:30 pm PST and it will be televised live on FS Prime Ticket so tune in and take in the game with us in this open thread. Of course, if you need a primer, check out trueblue's great preview.

5,000 at the game if the announcer is believed

I can see some blue in there too so hopefully the Bruins in the crowd make themselves heard.

Morris knocks down a 3 with a man/woman? in her face

Already better shooting from our girls than our guys.

Do we say man in her face or woman? Is it man to man or woman to woman? Honest questions here.

Good to know

Woman sounded weird, but upon thinking about it, man didn’t quite fit.

15th in the country in scoring defense

and tops in the conference in FG% defense for our Bruins.

Shooting from 3 a lot

but it’s not just jacking up threes. The ball goes inside and the three goes up on the kick out. Looks good early on. 6-5 UCLA.

Already seeing a few different defenses from CNC

Played tough man to man, stretched it full court for a possession and then just went to a half court zone trap.

We are scrappy as hell

more than makes up for whatever length we give up to SC.

Mike Garrett just told us to sit down

I’m at the game with a bunch of my ucla friends and Mikey just told us to sit down in our seats instead of standing to cheer on our bruins. He looks desparate to get anything to work.

Three 3-pt bricks in a row for SC

We finally grab the rebound and effortlessly connect from the top of the key… LOL

Interesting fact:

Erica Tukiainen is one hell of a figure skater. She says it’s her first love. (of course she was born in Finland)

Tight game but we're playing well

The refs are absolutely pathetic, but our free throw shooting isn’t good either. We should be up more than one. Good half, though.

by HailRover on Jan 17, 2010 3:32 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Definitely a frustrating half

We should be up more. I would hate to play against us. They’re always on you. You never get a chance to breath against CNC’s squad.

Jill painter just came over to talk to us

She wanted the story on Mike Garrett telling us to sit. Lol.

by Bruinmarcher on Jan 17, 2010 3:45 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Curious

But she posted it on her Twitter I’ve heard.

by Bruinmarcher on Jan 17, 2010 3:49 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

This is it

@jillpainter USC athletic director Mike Garrett went over to the UCLA student section at the women’s game today and personally asked them to sit down.

haven't read too many Painter articles...

but the few I have, she came across as… odd. (for lack of a better word)

Glad she’s on this story though.

She is mostly a clown

Looking for a story … to fill up her “column” space on DN. She wrote a horrible one today about RN’s half time comments and blew it way out of proportion than it needs to be. Classic traditional media nimrod.

In one way, this team is just like the men

Can’t knock down free throws. 6-13 from the stripe, while SC is 12-14.

Who is WNBA material on the Bruins? I'm new to WBB...

so I can’t come close to being able to evaluate talent. My apologies if this has been discussed in another post.

But we all know well be getting the last laugh when he’s fired after his shady and illegal administration is exposed.

This is the type of loss I can deal with

Not that these types of losses aren’t frustrating or upsetting, but if you’re going to go down, this is how you do it. Missed free throws will kill you and they did, which makes me want to tear my hair out, but CNC’s team went 100% all game long and was prepared well. Losses are never good, but this wasn’t something embarrassing.

65% free throw shooting as a team for the season coming into the game BTW.

Well stated.

I’m proud of these ladies and know they’ll get those trojettes back in Feb. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Mo Alexander has really impressed me in her approach to this season. She may not be our go-to center, but she exemplifies CNC’s first two years in that she has toned up (physically), tuned in, and turned on her game. CNC has brought a new culture and her squad has completely bought into it. Somehow I don’t think CNC has any issues with communicating directly to them and has no need for assistants to do it for her either.

Another classic $C coach quote...

Courtesy of Jill Painter’s twitter again:

@jillpainter: Here’s how Michael Cooper started his postgame press conference after USC beat UCLA, 70-63. ``F—- UCLA’’.

Nice.

by ak4797 on Jan 17, 2010 5:54 PM PST reply actions

WTF?

If any coach at UCLA did that I would want them fired immediately.

Coop’ll probably get a merit badge…

Maybe that classless asshole should take some lessons

From a Bruin and a Laker far greater than he: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Disgraceful

Kills me comin from Coop, but clearly he’s drinking the mustard and ketchup kool aid. Typical trOJan behavior – classless. I agree with CafeLA – If any UCLA couch said that I would want him/her fired. Embarrassing…but I’m sure they applaud that behavior over there.

Back from the game

It was definately a heart breaker. We tried to make all the noise we could, but obviously this game was won/lost at the line. When i get home tonight, i’ll put up a fanpost recapping the game. In the meantime, i’m very glad there was a gameday thread and more exposure for the womens team (and that we could be seen on tv!!!!)

Actually

I get it. My disdain for cheaty FAR surpasses anything I feel about Sanchez. I don’t “root” for him per se, but it doesn’t bother me when he proves petey wrong.

Wow... I had the same question...

I guess it’s wrong, but to me every time Sancheat-o wins it really makesPenis Carroll look like bigger douche (if that’s possible?). Maybe this should be written up as a fan post. lol

Anyway, as a huge Colts fan, I hope it all ends next week for Joe Namath Jr.
