SoCal Media Day Friday & Baseball Coverage Suggestions

The 2010 college baseball season is only 30 days away and the hype for the season is ramping up. The first big event locally is SoCal College Baseball Media Day presented by Easton (a huge thanks to Easton who is putting some money into this and doing a ton to increase the coverage of college baseball), which takes place Friday at the ESPN Zone in Anaheim. Head coaches from USC, UCLA, Fullerton, UCI, USD, Pepperdine, Cal Poly, LMU, CSUN, SDSU, UCR, UCSB and CSU Long Beach will all be on hand for the event that will give the media a chance to talk with the coaches about the upcoming season and all 12 will also take part in a coaches cook off.

I have been invited to attend the event and will be there to help get ready for my coverage this 2010 season. This is where I'd like to hear from you guys though. I want your suggestions. This Friday, would anyone out there be interested in live updates from media day? I will provide short updates on my UCLA baseball twitter, but would you all be interested in a thread that I can update throughout the day with more detailed information?

In addition, now would be a good time to provide me some feedback on what you want from your 2010 UCLA baseball coverage. I will provide series previews each week in addition to game recaps, as I've done in years past. I will also have my detailed five part season preview, as I've done the past two seasons. The alumni game is February 6th and I will be there to give a recap, then on February 8th, I will post part one of my season preview and the five parts will take us up to the season opener on the 19th. What else would you guys want? More coverage? Less coverage? Anything in particular you want included in the previews/recaps? Any feedback that you can provide me would be much appreciated on how to cover media day and the season.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

I think what you have been doing in the past is excellent. You are THE source for Bruin baseball for me. I follow you on twitter and appreciate the updates when you are at the gamnes. Otherwise the summaries weekly work quite well. Not much interested in preseason predictions as that typically has led to dissapointment. Thanks for all the work you put into it. I hope the amount of time you spend on it is enjoyable for you.

Media Day thread

would be great but I’d be satisfied with regular tweets. I’d love to heard from the coaches. Preseason and season coverage will be great of course. Would also like to see more in-depth player profiles if possible. And maybe even coaches. Like, what did Vanderhook do for Cody Decker that eventually made him into the Minor League Hitter of the Year when his 2008 average was .218?!

RE:

While I appreciate your passion and applaud all your hard work, I must admit that I sporadically follow your posts and I never read your tweets….just not a twitter person. So being a casual reader, I can’t help but notice that the Morgan Center also does a good job with thier coverage of baseball. Both their weekend previews and post game recaps seem to be well done. Obviously there is no commentary, but for game info… I don’t mind reading the baseball website.
I don’t think you need to do anymore… in fact, having been around many teams myself, in my opinion you might want to scale back your coverage, because you don’t want to be thought of as that guy that will post everything he sees and or hears. You loose credibility with the coaches and guys on the team…if you ever want to get close to them and figure out how Decker turned around last season.

Thanks for all your feedback guys

and if anyone else has anything else, it would be much appreciated. I don’t have anything in mind to expand coverage, but this is an outstanding community with people who are far smarter than I am so if anyone has a suggestion on something that would be cool, I would definitely explore the possibility of it.

As for your comment movielover, it is noted. I understand that some people don’t have much interest in my posts and I’m fine with that. I do this as a fan because I have long been a fan and heard complaints for a while about the lack of coverage so I do my best to fill that gap. I hope I don’t come off as someone who posts everything I hear and see because I don’t. There is plenty that I keep to myself and I hope the players, coaches, administrators and fans don’t look at me as someone they can’t trust. Your point is noted though and it is something I try to be aware of. It is a very good point.

As I mentioned, I do this as a fan and just want to increase the exposure of a program that I love. For the most part, I try to do everything in the aim of bettering the program and don’t try to be a journalist always looking out for the next scoop. I don’t want to sugarcoat things when stuff goes bad either though so when things go wrong, I feel like I need to be honest about it. The only times I really push something that’s negative is something like the facility situation, which I’ve long made clear that I think it is a joke and my hope is that by pushing it and making people more aware of it, we can see some real change. That would help the program so it is why I push it.

Again, I’d like any other feedback so anyone else out there, please share.

Here's an idea, Ryan

How about a “College Baseball 101” post? Something that just explains the basic structure of the sport: how the schedule works, what the thresholds are to get into the tournament, how the tournament itself is seeded and played out.

I’ve long been a reader of your UCLA baseball posts, but I’ve always felt a bit befuddled because I don’t quite get how NCAA baseball operates. Like, I know how college hoops works: there’s a nonconference schedule, then the conference season, and if you’re a team like UCLA and have 20 or so wins you get into the tournament usually, and from there it’s simple.

I don’t have the same sense of the college baseball world. I’ll read that UCLA is, say, 16-9, and I won’t really have any sense of where that puts us in the grand scheme of things. Or I’ll hear about a team’s designated “Sunday Starter,” and I won’t get how exactly that’s significant.

Speaking for myself, I think something covering the basics would be great help in getting more out of your day-to-day coverage.

Great idea

I’ll do that one in the next couple weeks.

Ryan, Love your work, especially the stuff with the coaches, you have built a nice working relationship with them. Your coverage is vital , enabling me to follow the baseball bruins when I can’t make it up to LA, continue with what you do!!
