Center Court: Ben Ball (Arizona) Open Thread
Arizona Wildcats at UCLA Bruins, Jan 2, 2010 10:00 AM PST
Hey, we are going to need all of those guys - all of them - Honeycutt, Dragovic and Nelson to be in their best form this morning to hold serve against Arizona Wildcats. The Bruins tip off in about half an hour against Wildcats on a regionally televised broadcast on CBS. Both teams come in with a record of 6-7 and they both need this game badly to set the tone for rest of the 2009 Pac-10 season.
You can read up (or listen to) our musings on this game here. One again, we have some good news/bad news re. TV broadcast. The good news is the game on a national network (CBS). The bad news is that it is regionally televised as majority of the nation will get to see Gonzaga taking on Illinois. So we are going to need help from everyone watching the game back in California to keep us updated via game thread.
Anyway, if you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site and also tWWL. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

The normal, large Arizona contingent is here
And we will hear them loud and clear with few Bruins showing up. Hopefully the boys keep them from having anything to cheer about.

2-0 would be a gret confidence builder for these kids
I have to say again how much respect I have to Howland for getting this team re-grouped after the AWFUL start and all the drama with both Drago and Gordon.
Also for him going against his own fabric and implenting the zone.
Howland is a terrific coach and teacher

i know it isn't all his fault...
but michael roll’s D is terrible. we all go to town on drago but roll is up there in his level of ineptitude. it just seems when he goes in the game the other team goes on a run. it’d be fine if he compensated with sharpshooting or any sort of offensive presence. but right now, his presence on the court is offensive…
Across The Face
I wish it was more "offensive," as in more offense.
He hasn’t made a shot.

Rebounds and Defense a matter of effort and intensity
I am looking at the seniors for not bringing either to this game and setting a bad example for the rest of the team. MR and ND needs to step up in the second half with their effort
One Positive TH
TH is a key. His passing set up our best offense of the half. (Some of our FTs came off his passing). He also was very good on defense. I would even try him on Williams. He seems quick while the rest of our team seems slow.
step up or step aside...
i’d take either option
Across The Face
Not really.
RN and TH are doing barely OK. JA worse than ASU. Roll bad. Drago bad. Roll bad. BoBo bad. Lane bad.
by orlandobruin on Jan 2, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions
Not unexpected
Sadly this does not suprize me this is a team who is going to have great shooting games and the fall of the cliff the next. They simply do not have enough playmakers. Athletic teams will continue to blow by our perimeter d and with no inside presence it makes it tough to stop them. Lee has been awful and honeycutt looks like he has never played offensive basketball in his life. It’s tough when your best athletes are so limited offensively. Anderson is getting better but he still at his best a back up poing guard i mean the kid has no touch do you see his midrange jumpers almost bring down the rim.

Why would CBH stop fouling so early? It seems like it would at least be good experience for his team who didn’t look like they really know how to play hack and attack ball.
If Bochy coached the Warriors Bengie Molina would start every game at PG.

I’ve asked this question a few times in the past. It has always been my impression that CBH gives up earlier than most other coaches.

Inconsistency
As good as our win was against ASU, this loss to UA was as bad
Go Bruins!
They Could Get Through The Scoring Droughts
if they would stick with intense defense, but it seems like they don’t feel it.

Sorry performance
Wow..we just got blown out. You think that Howland would’ve thrown in some of that 2-3 zone that we used effectively against ASU. Terrible offensive performance in the first half and the defense was off all game.
Couldn't stop em.
It seems we were always a step or 2 to slow. I was wondering why the 2-3 zone wasn’t thrown in.
Team loss today
Although JA was by far the biggest liability yet again, this was a total team loss. ML didn’t show up until the last 10 minutes, RN missed way too many layups, MR had a tough time matching up against a Hill at small forward since MR is a shooting guard mascarading as a sf, and ND couldn’t make any outside shots. Add that to CBH stubbornly sticking with a broken man to man defense while the game got away in the first half and you have a recipe for another disappointing performance.
The only bright spot was TH (who also missed a few easy shots). Hopefully CBH will move him to the starting lineup next week in place of JA as we have all been begging for.
its a very disappointing season
Im glad Howland loves his man to man defense, because that’s the only reason to play it with this roster. This roster will never be an effective man to man defensive team. EVER. Yet Howland sees the success of the zone yesterday, but refuses to play it….

I'm a Little Mystified
I don’t ever want to second guess CBH, but I do wish I understood this.

We have always known CBH is incredibly stubborn
last game, he showed the willingness to be creative to win.
This game, even with JA having a groin injury, he insists on playing man to man, which we do not have the roster to do, and gets UA a huge lead…
I really believe BH would rather lose doing it his way than win another when it is all said and done.

What Defense?
The insinuation that this team can play ANY interior defense strains the limits of credibility. And to imply that the answer “may lie within in” is incredulous, A full autopsy of this corpse couldn’t locate a shread of hope on the defensive side of the ball. For the record, I decided to leave out the hyperbole. Yes, it was (is) that bad.
