An explanation to CBH Doubters
For all those doubting CBH, I want you to think of what should have happen this year.
1. Our best player was supposed to Holiday. He would be our point, arguably the most important position in College Basketball. CBH has said he did not expect to lose him. Now, our offense does not have a point guard, ML is not ready and JA may not have the talent. Sure, CBH should have prepared for an injury to Holiday but part of the problem with last year’s team is DC and Holiday did not mesh and Holiday was out of position as a #2 guard. While both were great individual talents, the 2 point guards did not play well together and he may have wanted to avoid that problem this year.
2. Drew Gordon was supposed to be the rock on rebounding and defense and chip in double digit points a game.
3. The 2 and 3 positions were supposed to be ML and TH each playing 30+ minutes a game. (More below on them.) MR was suppose to be the backup or the senior helping those two ease into their positions. Eventually, one or both would be stars of the team and would determine how far we went in the Tourney. Now ML is having to lead from day 1 of the season and play point as well when he is not ready. TH is still playing catch up from many injuries and sickness.
4. RN, JK, ND were supposed to be fighting out for minutes at 4 and 5. JK would slowly give way to RN as time went on. ND minutes would be determined by our offensive needs and he may not even have been playing much if the offense clicked.
5. JA would be playing 4 minutes a game giving a break to Holiday. This alone may have beat AZ. JA was covering Kyle Fogg and made him look like an All American. Folk's career high was 16 going into the game and he averaged 7.8 points a game. If ML or Holiday is covering him he is not going to get 25 and would probably be lucky to get 8. That 17 point difference is more than the margin of victory. Hopefully JA's problem was his hurt groin but I am not so sure.
CBH didn't blow it, isn't a bad recruiter, etc. He just got a number of bad breaks.
Now a little more on the AZ game today.
CBH accomplished his number #1 priority on defense, he shut down Wise. ML did a good job on defense, don’t fool yourself. When Lee went out at 11:07 in second half, Wise promptly scored. While ML was out Wise scored four points in less than minute. By comparison, Wise scored four points for the game when ML was covering him. No one else on our team could stop him. ML did a good job on one of the PAC 10s best players.
Because of no Holiday, now we are faced with, gulp, ND as a key to our team on offense. Don’t fool yourself, we beat ASU because of him. He has shown to be an good inside player and occasionally a good outside player. But it is really bad he is a key as he is not a CBH player. He is a showboat, plays matador defense, and I am not sure about his head. He needs to rebound better on defense then he did in this game, as he will never be a great defender. I don’t think CBH is happy about this but may feel it necessary. (As he felt necessary to play him for extra offense last year.)
For CBH knows that RN and MR cannot carry the team. While RN can dominate bad players, he needs to work on his FTs and cannot carry the team in the PAC-10. He needs to be our third leading scorer and find ways to score. MR is a liability on defense. He had a bad first half but not a bad game. He is no pun intend a role player who can’t carry a team but will get his points and do his job. He is close to maximizing his potential right now.
TH is the player to watch on this team and what he does did not show up in the boxscore. He made some great passes that lead to FT points. He made some steals and blocks and looked like he had the most energy on the court. I know he also missed an easy layup and a tip in, was out of position a couple times on defense, but he played well overall; like a good but inexperienced freshmen. CBH went to him for JA when JA couldn’t handle Fogg and stopped the bleeding. He should be playing 30+ minutes somewhere on this team. If TH had not been hurt and sick so much he would be playing more as he is a true CBH player.
On CBH losing this team as some has suggested: I respect he stood up to Gordon; that could not have been easy and this was the worst possible year to lose a talented player. I respect what he is trying to do with ML and how tough that is. Look, ML looked brilliant for a four minute stretch on offense when he took the game over and scored 10 points. But look at game tracker, during that stretch he made two stupid fouls, Wise got a layup off him, and at the end he was out of control and ended the stretch with a turnover. He is trying to make ML into the “star” and ML did it for 31 minutes on defense and 4 minutes on offense but he could not do both. Maybe he will someday, but I trust CBH knows what he is doing, which is the way I will end this too long post.

Good stuff
My main concern is point number 1. The issue I am having a hard time dealing with is why didn’t he have a contingency plan in place if Holiday had gone pro. From what I had read and known all year, I thought the chances of Holiday leaving was around 70-80 percent. It became around 90 percent following the Washington State game at home when Holiday got torched by Klay Thompson and Howland benched him (too late) for defense).
Holiday was perturbed as he openly stayed that his “D” was just fine. From there on there seemed to be a clear disconnect and it seemed all but given that Holiday was leaving. So the question I have is why didn’t Howland have a plan in place and having another backup point guard slotted for spring.
He is being smart this year as he is not waiting for the commitments of McCallum or Zeigler. That is why he recruited Jones and looking at couple of other players.
I think he and his staff dropped the ball on this last year. Other points you made I mostly agree with. Good post DC.
I think we're seeing the contingency plan
We’ve been doing what we could do to lock down the southland. Truth be told, I think the LA area has just been weak for backcourt players the past couple of years. I think we all remember the Larry Drew/JA recruitment. We got most of the “elite” LA guards from that class and it just hasn’t worked out so far. I believe the solution is to look nationally. Locking down LA isn’t going to be good enough anymore, and if that means hiring assistants that have roots in different areas of the country for recruiting purposes, then that’s what we need to do. The reason I believe it is so important to get McCallum and Ziegler isn’t just because of our immediate needs, but it would go a long way to prove that we can recruit outside of the west coast.
Definitely
Part of me is also wondering if there is a way we can get Keating back (especially if his Santa Clara stint doesn’t work out).
Keating coming back would be a godsend
I feel like wishing for that is selfish, because I think he’s earned his shot at a HC gig, but he was a huge loss that we haven’t yet found an adequate replacement for. I think losing Ernie Ziegler was also a sizable blow to our coaching staff.
Holiday v. Other Early Depatures
Look at history. I am not sure I buy public statements of intention or the reading of tea leaves to foretell. I trust coach. Remember the year before the insiders and experts said there was “no way” DC was coming back, a lot higher than 70-80% chance. And to be honest from DC’s NBA perspective another year did not help him and one could argue he should not have stayed an extra year.
Now turn to Jrue Holiday’s numbers. He average 8.5 points a game and 27 minutes a game. He was drafted 17th. He could have benefited from another year and needed a year as the man/point guard. The other players who left early under CBH: Kevin Love, Jordan Farmar, Luc Richard Mbah Moute, Afflalo, etc. were all at the top of their games and arguably ready to go. No way for Holiday.
As far as WSU game, most players are very competitive and many players would respond similarly to such comments. Especially 19 year olds.
Of course you are right on the contingency front, especially since point is arguable the most important point in college. But, I just don’t think it is that easy to say CBH and/or staff blew it.
Holiday and Gordon
aren’t that good IMO. Yes, Jrue had great potential as a PG, no doubt, especially his passing, but last time I checked he shot terribly. [I have no idea how he’s doing as a pro. If he’s got a shot this year, it’s news to me.] Gordon didn’t show anything this year that I can remember. No doubt we would be better with Holiday then what we’ve got, but not enough to overcome this total team implosion.
The most noticeable thing about the loss to Arizona was mentioned by another poster: they were so much quicker, and IMO much more athletic on both ends. Not even close. And they are young, too. So what gives?
Some serious mistakes in judging talent have been made recently. I don’t know who to blame, but I know who is held responsible. Nelson is the only recent kid with the beef and passion to make a difference. The rest may be talented someday, but they are awfully frail and skinny right now.
Of the current players, the only ones that are close to playing Bruin basketball are Roll, Nelson, Lee and Honeycutt. Maybe others will develop, but not so far.
You are right, of course, that we are desperate for a PG and a center. I really don’t see one in this group. Help will have to come next year. Hopefully, some fantastic recruits will see the huge opportunity and come our way.
Untl then, it’s going to be a long, tough season.
A little D and a few Rebounds go a long way
Holiday had a lot of potential and was out of position as a 2 guard. It is why he was drafted in the first round despite his UCLA year. He has started 10 games for a very bad 76ers team and is in the rotation. He would have helped and him versus JA is not a fair comp.
Gordon was not going to be a star but rather was going to be a starter. I don’t think Arizona would have beat the Bruins on the boards with Gordon in the game. If three of their offensive boards become defensive boards for us the game is even on rebounding. I think Gordon is worth that and a few inside points.
However, true it may be, it still amounts to shoulda, woulda, coulda.
We are really really bad. Steve Lavin’s last year bad. Bob Toledo’s decision to go with Cory Paus bad. You can rationalize it all you want, but at the end of the day, we are really really bad. And while some loss of performance is to be expected when you lose the last of your Final Four team contributors. There is no reason what so ever things should have ever reached this point.

Agreed
We should never sink to the point where we are now. Ever. Look at what the SUCsters are doing with everything they lost before this year. With a coach who took a job that NO ONE wanted.
The excuses last year were losing Love and Westbrook, etc.. The excuses this year are what is laid out above. The excuses next year? Stay tuned.
At some point, we need to stop making excuses and have some accountability.

i don't know if this has been mentioned
but for all the uproar about the 2008 class being the one that is killing us right now, I think it is actually the lack of a 2007 class that is really the source of a lot of troubles right now. That year we brought in KL and Stanback and though KL was the centerpiece of another Final Four run, after he and Stanback left we were left with a big void in our junior class.
oops, thanks
yeah it seemed strange that no one would mention that here.
also has anyone mentioned the lazeric jones commit? I think we definitely need some jucos to fill in the gaps of the one (or two) and done’s
Holiday leaving
was also another catalyst for Gordon leaving. Remember, he was going to “get on his hands and knees” to get JH to come back…probably because he could tell how bad JA was in practice…
You have to believe, even though they turned out not to be great representatives of UCLA, that with Holiday and Gordon in the lineup, this would be a much better team…
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
