Countdown To Signing Day 2010

Signing day is under two weeks away now so consider this your 2010 football recruiting thread. Please rec it so it stays at the top and then use the comments section to post your thoughts on the recruiting class or any updates you have. Here's a list of our current verbal commits, which I'll update right up to signing day. Those who have committed since this post originally posted will be moved to the verbal commit list and will be in italics.

  • Anthony Barr- ATH, Los Angeles, CA

  • Wesley Flowers- DT, Fresno, CA
  • Kody Innes- OL, Scottsdale, AZ
  • Marquis Jackson- DE, Santa Clarita, CA
  • Jordon James- RB, Corona, CA
  • Malcolm Jones- ATH, Westlake Village, CA

  • Wade Yandall- OL, Carson, CA (enrolled)
  • John Young- TE, Los Angeles, CA

In addition, here is a list of some of the Bruins' targets heading to February 3rd. This isn't a comprehensive list, but a list of some of the guys I think are most likely to sign or are key to the recruiting class. If you think someone who isn't on here should be, let me know. The schools they are considering are in parentheses and if the school is in bold, he is committed there.

  • Owamagbe Odighizuwa- DE, Portland, OR (Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA, Oregon St.)
  • Ricky Heimuli- DT, Salt Lake City, UT (UCLA, BYU, USC, Utah, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington)

He's opening things back up

Rumors in the UCLA recruiting world about DTs.

I have no idea if either of these rumors are correct or not, but there are rumblings out there that say the following:

(1) J. Moore may have academic issues with UCLA notwithstanding his high GPA; and

(2) C. Marsh may switch his commit from LSU to UCLA.

Anyone have anything more concrete regarding either of these rumors? I trust the Bruinsnation family much more that posters on other UCLA sites.

DT is obviously our greatest position of need so either of these would be BIG news for Bruins.

by orlandobruin on Jan 21, 2010 5:43 AM PST reply actions

Heard the same about those two points

I am not getting my hopes up on Marsh [who knows the kid may change his mind couple of times before signing day. :)]. About Moore … have to be patient. Too early to worry about that story line I think. I am guessing he is working his rear end off to get in past UCLA admissions. I had heard that he was making progress. We will see.

Also, I’d add Zumwalt to our target list.

I almost put him on

but I really think he’s locked in with Stanford. I’ll put him up there though.

I heard Barr is going to decide in the next few days, but wouldn’t shock me me if he held out till signing day. Oaks Christian coach said he would be surprised if Marsh did not go to UCLA, but he said $uc is starting to press and if kiffin gets time with him that it will be 50-50. I have also heard a few kids committed to $uc will pull what I am now going to call a Notingham on signing day, because they are worried the staff is not being honest about the sanctions coming down the pike. I also heard Cnc is putting a full court press on Jake heaps but it is still a long shot.

this maybe

crn’s best class so far if he can land heimuli, marsh, pullard, owa, barr, and jefferson.

by JulianD on Jan 21, 2010 7:24 AM PST reply actions

Rykeem Yates is

a verbal that is not noted on your list. (DE from Fresno, Edison)

by flexmonkeybruin on Jan 21, 2010 7:34 AM PST reply actions

My predictions

UCLA – Marsh, Heimuli, Epensea, Jefferson, Pullard
Barr – ND, Riley – SUC, Shirley UofA, Owa – Neb (pains me to write this, I love this kid), Ambles – Tenn, Ego – LSU (he can take Marsh’s spot),

Also I know UCLA is interested in the JC DT Goggins.

by uclaves on Jan 21, 2010 7:45 AM PST reply actions

I can live with that

Optimistic, yet realistic. Of course, I’d love to get Owa too, but I’d be satisfied with the combo of Marsh, Heimuli and Epensea.

by longbordr52 on Jan 21, 2010 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

has someone explained elsewhere

how Nebraska has such strong ties in Oregon?

I only say that because of Owa and Suh, so maybe it’s not really a trend, but does someone on Nebraska’s staff have major Oregon ties?

It just seems crazy that this class wont have even one quarterback

really a bummer that nottingham jumped ship

William Doolittle at your service, a.k.a. will do.

by Ollie on Jan 21, 2010 9:56 AM PST reply actions

that does suck

specially since next years QB class doesn’t look too deep. I noticed UCLA has already offered Braxton Miller out of OH. CRN will be going up against some other CFB big dogs for him but you never know with CRN and CNC.

by King J77 on Jan 21, 2010 10:35 AM PST up reply actions

don' think it is too big a deal

with two young qbs adding a qb recruit would be in essence to provide more depth at the position. i like the choice between brehaut and prince for the next few years and coach and chow seem cool with it too. jerry will come in and be a good backup at worst without wasting a scholie as mentioned below. getting lbs, dls, and ols is more important than getting our next 3rd string qb.

SUCCESS DEPENDS ON THE OL!

the lack of offensive lineman on our radar is just the stupidest thing i can imagine. it is plain common sense that you can not be a good football team without a good OL. we have three prospects on our list and about five spots on our line that need to be filled on our line. we did a great job this past year putting a line together, but the bottom line is that we need to put a star-studded line on the field every week with three multi-purpose reserves. this is not looking very good for next year. what is “KARL” nueheisel doing. we have plenty of playmakers and speed, we have quality qb’s and look in good shape with our defense. our list of recruits should have about 4 to five ol (4 & 5 star). WEAK OL = WEAK TEAM!!!

by #1bruinfan on Jan 21, 2010 12:47 PM PST reply actions

Most top OL

are from the midwest and south. With more success on the field, Coach Neu will tap into those states

by AMM19 on Jan 21, 2010 1:10 PM PST up reply actions

I agree, Partially

With out a doubt, the OL is extremely important, especially for running the ball and wearing down defenses. What I have noticed is CRN is recruiting athlete’s. It’s cool to see the 4 an 5 stars next to their names. But, it doesn’t mean they will pan out. Atv, he turned out to be one of the best true corners in the Pac-10. I want to say he was only a 3 star coming out of high school. With that being said, it’s up to UCLA to develop these players to FOOTBALL PLAYERS. UCLA is starting to get tougher, you can see it on the field. With the players taking their Strength and Conditioning to heart you will see it on the field and every position. CRN, knows what he’s doing. Next year it will show every where.

by jaybru777 on Jan 21, 2010 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

We are supposedly going after Giovani di Paolo

Hard. As in, a family friend of mine at St. Bonny says GdP is torn at this point between staying with USC and committing to UCLA.

FYI, for those who don’t know, he’s a 4-star OL from St. Bonaventure in Ventura.

by bruinmike on Jan 21, 2010 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

This weekend

Is his offical visit to SUC

by uclaves on Jan 21, 2010 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

Comparing Rick to Karl on recruiting = WEAK TAKE

For the last two years Rick has been out there busting his ass to bring in great players, including O-linemen, and it shows up in our recruiting rankings.

That’s a heck of a lot different than Karl who was too busy remembering birthdays, hitting the links, and shying away from anyone SUC was even sniffing at.

by bornagainbruin on Jan 21, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

Defensive line is as important offensive line

and our offensive line is in better shape than the defensive line right now. Maiava, Baca, Harris, Abele, Capella gives us a solid core of freshmen-juniors that can play up front and Innes and Ward join them this year. XSF should be back in two years too so while the importance of the OL cannot be understated, we’re doing a good job building up front there. The defensive line is woefully thin though.

Formerly ryebreadraz

by Ryan Rosenblatt on Jan 21, 2010 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

Hopefully Hasiak can pull it together

Because i have no doubt he’ll contribute to the competition and make the O-line better as a whole.

by CheekyBruin on Jan 22, 2010 9:14 AM PST up reply actions

While I agree with you in theory, I think you should take a step back.

I don’t know how many 4* and 5* offensive linement there are every year, but it’s pretty unrealistic for us to get 4 or 5 of them. Our OL improved incredibly last year, and if Hasiak comes back we seem to be decently situated. That said, a staff can never ignore the OL, but that does not appear to be the case here. Innes, Ward, and Yandall are all very good prospects.

IMO, the more pressing need is the DL, which the staff is clearly focusing on. We have a few verbals and even more targeted recruits. I think this class is shaping up nicely.

Before you start grouping CRN with Dorrell, you should probably take notice of the overall talent upgrade taking place. I don’t think we have “plenty of playmakers and speed” considering the dearth of big plays last year. At this point, the program needs a mass infusion of talent, which is exactly what we received last year and will receive this year.

totally confused. i thought we recruited him as RB… and when we got james / jones we stopped and let him go to ND.

then again scout always had him at ATH. now they got him at OLB.

are we becoming the next tailback u? or did we recruit him for defense? scout roster says RB, S. maxpreps has him as DB. so is he a safety? to me he seems like a stud DE. opposite ayers?

UCLA only has two scholarships to give

(20 minus 18 commits), so how can we get Dietrich, Espensa, Ferguson, Owamagbe, Pullard, Heimuli, Ryan, Rye, Marsh, Murphy, Giovani di Paolo plus any of the other 15 names I’ve seen listed. What gives?

by rustyscrew on Jan 21, 2010 10:06 PM PST reply actions

It's easy, Rusty

We just add a group of assistant coaches who happen to be the dads (or moms) of Dietrich, Espensa, Ferguson, Owamagbe, Pullard, Heimuli, Ryan, Rye, Marsh, Murphy, Giovani di Paolo plus any of the other 15 names. That’s a perfectly acceptable practice. Just ask the guys across town.

Transfers and 'retirement' from the team

I still expect there to be some purging of the roster this off-season. A lot of schools load up on scholies above and beyond what is available to prepare for this eventuality.

by CAJason80 on Jan 22, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

Some guys with schollies leave

Last year Dominique Johnson, Raymond Carter, Chris Forcier & Aundre Dean left the program. I would guess there would be a couple more under performers who would leave. Also you could have guys greyshirt like Koster & Maka did this year so they would count against next years limit not this years. I could see TE Young and LB Kendricks being candidates for this.

Dudes gossiping

Hope it all comes true, or at least the ones that benefit the football team.

I've still got Oregon St. up there

but it’s essentially down to us, Nebraska and Oregon. There were rumors on Oregon boards today they he dropped the Ducks, but there has been nothing remotely concrete to support that yet.

Yeah, just heard about that

It’s been a strange recruitment for sure. It was us, Nebraska and Oregon for a bit, but now OSU has that spot. I’ve heard that his high school coach favors the Beavers so we’ll see how that one pans out. I have hope for Owa, but it really could go any way now IMO.

Huffman predicted Oregon

Hopefully this helps us. Not like Willis who had us and NC and then us and Tenn and then he leaves Tenn for NC.

Where there is smoke...

Hey Mike I saw someone post on the BRO free board that Di Poala decommited from USC. There is no link or proof, but interesting that there is a 2nd source.

Don't be sucked in by that sort of thing

Remember Doh! and all his “sources.” The leaker of that story has a chance that it will prove to be true, and if it does, then he touts it and his ability to dig out the facts. If it proves not to be true, you never hear of it again. That’s reporting a la Doh!.

Apparently Marsh commits

2 posts on BruinGold and BRO forums say he has committed to UCLA

Dietrich Riley will announce on signing day

I’ve got a good feeling about him.

This class is light at his position.

Looks like bruinmike might be on to something here. You have been on this for a while. Wow.

The article says that a key OL recruit

is so solid to SC and can’t imagine going anywhere else. This was posted three days ago, in the midst of a lot of speculation that he wasn’t very solid in his commitment and was looking hard at UCLA. Well, that recruit is taking an official visit to UCLA this weekend.

I won't get into specifics of whether or not he's a silent

or anything like that. I won’t say whether or not I have that information. What I will say is that based on what I’m hearing, I like our chances.

Wait a minute

How can there be a “silent verbal?” Is that what I see when I watch a game with the sound off, and the recruit was just mouthing the words?

by Fox 71 on Jan 31, 2010 5:39 AM PST up reply actions

Way to be on it Sam

As soon as I get confirmation from any second source, the list will be updated.

I'd also like to ass

That if we do Epenesa, it’s huge because it looks like we’re losing Julious Moore and could lose another DL recruit. Can’t say which one though.

Man....

There is waaay too much going on. Rumor that we could possibly lose a 3rd depending on what shakes down on signing day. I want to keep the class we have right now and secure the leans but the situation is so fluid that I can’t tell how things are going to shake down.

by BlueReign on Jan 29, 2010 6:40 PM PST up reply actions

Well

I said DL not DT so if Reign was on the same train of thought as me, we’ll still have some DT.

rumors are marquis jackson and julius moore

i don’t see a 3rd rumor? jackson i believe is the DE ryan’s hinting at

Just a rumor

Besides Moore, Jackson may be an academic casualty but no official word and rumor of Bryant taking a trip to Oregon. Bryant is the 3rd guy I was referring too but like I said, just a rumor at this point.

by BlueReign on Jan 30, 2010 7:17 AM PST up reply actions

Added Epenesa to the commit list

and took Ambles off the target list because we’re out of it. Probably out of the Ferguson chase too, but I’ll leave him there.

It sounds like UCLA is cleaning house with players on the team? Is that what's going on?

Why are they getting so many of the same players? I know we need help. Is that higher recruits want to come to UCLA now?

by jaybru777 on Jan 29, 2010 8:23 PM PST up reply actions

Just curious

…how come Yates is not on the list? Did we lose him? We were the only bigtime school to offer him a few weeks ago. I am sure alot of people are now coming after him now that we have offered. Is he still on board, or is he no longer with us?

by muircoach on Jan 29, 2010 8:55 PM PST reply actions

according to scout.com

yates still on our list. i think just an oversight by ryan up at the top. it was already even mentioned about halfway up. plus he’s got… or we’ve got… 2 of his teammates coming as well – tevin mcdonald and wesley flowers

Likely to greyshirt

which puts him in the 2011 class.

As long as we lose DL commits

because they see the writing on the wall that better recruits are coming in I am okay. We cannot fix depth in one class. It needs to spread out. I would take four 4 star guys over six 3 star guys. Signing Epanesa, Heimueli (sp?), and Owa would make it just fine to me if we lose one or two of the other lower rated guys. I don’t want to lose those guys flat out, but a trade up is fine.
