Around SBN: Leandro Damiao Is Still Really Good

Although not a complete surprise (see Gold), Barr finally committed to UCLA over Notre Dame. He comes in as either an enormous RB (which causes injury questions) or as a LB (which we need more).

I wonder if there's any truth to the rumor

that we swooped him up by recruiting him as an RB instead of an LB. Unless he stayed injury-free and turned into an Eddie George type as suggested by some scouting services, I would much rather see him on D.

it does seem

that CRN is willing to give recruits a chance to try out for the position they initially want. If they simply aren’t good enough, most seem to realize that they can start at another position. I don’t really have a problem with telling a recruit that they’ll get a chance to prove themselves at their position of choice, as long as they have a relatively open mind.

where'd you hear that rumor?

we got james and jones already, i figured barr would be rb at ND. scout actually lists him as OLB (i thought it said ATH previously) so i sort of guessed we recruited him specifically as OLB.

or maybe someone can shed more light on the possibility of us becoming the next tailback u?

It was floating around on some scouting message boards. Hard to believe anything you hear on those things. I was hoping someone might have more info here. Even if it’s only rumors, I’d still be more inclined to believe something written here by a known poster (greater sense of accountability within this community).

Jon Gold has called it "official," indicating that he doesn't know what official means

I mean, it’s not official until the guy actually signs of Feb. 3.

Come on Gold!

Yeah

Well, not really a surprise from my point of view.

per Gold's blog

I just watched a highlight reel of Anthony Barr on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpUEul09has

As a RB, he is absolutely HUGE. He actually looks and runs physically like a TE. The problem that my (very amateur) eyes can see is that he stands up too tall when he hits the hole. If he doesn’t bulk up or learn to position his body lower so that his ankles and knees aren’t broken, I’m concerned that a guy like DonkeyKong Suh will rip him to shreds.

Luckily, positioning and conditioning can be taught by Coach Moses and improved fairly easily. If he decides to play defense, which I hope he does, then he can cause problems as a big LB or good DE.

Of course it probably is better if he runs lower at time, but

you saw Gerhart this year, right? He ran almost straight up, too, not that Barr is that good yet by any means.

But I’m with you all the way on your excitement. This guy is good, really good. He will help us big time wherever he plays.

6'4"

It would be very tough for him to survive as a RB at this level. Toby has a compact center of mass even when he runs straight up, this kid will kid broken like a twig from real LB’s at this level.

Want a physical body type comparison, Randy Moss or JJ Stokes.

What a huge pickup

for a CRN. I’ve seen Barr play twice, and I think he’ll be better suited at LB.
