A Recruiting Note For Everyone On Bruins Nation: Advisory From UCLA Athletics
Please read this carefully.
In an email we just received from Morgan Center, the UCLA Athletic Department reminds us of the following:
[P]ursuant to NCAA Bylaw 13.4.1.1(a), general correspondence (which includes emails as well as letters and postcards) may only be sent to prospective student-athletes by institutional staff members. Other individuals, especially representatives of UCLA's athletics interests (aka "boosters") are not permitted to speak or correspond with high school or junior college prospective student-athletes for the purposes of getting them to attend a particular college.
I would also personally add that to be safe everyone here should not communicate with prospective student-athletes via facebook, twitter or any other notes of online communication even if they were not explicitly referenced in the advisory from Morgan Center.
Please help our football program comply with this rule by refraining from any type of correspondence with prospective student-athletes. Thanks.
We can use this post as a fresh recruiting thread as Ryan's recommended thread is filling up.
GO BRUINS.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Just BN?
Nestor, do you know if this was just sent to you/BN or if it was sent to other boards/sites/whatever as well?
I would add
It wasn’t sent because of anything specific on BN. But we have had discussions about it and I thought their email was extremely prudent on their part to send out. They have done due diligence on their part at this point.
In related news
the USC Athletic Department issued this stern warning:
Pursuant to NCAA Bylaw 13.4.1.1(a), general correspondence (which includes cash payments, limo rides and visits from really hot co-eds) may only be sent to prospective student-athletes by institutional staff members, agents, managers, life coaches, and entrepreneurs. Other individuals, especially representatives of USC’s athletics interests (aka middle men, Friends of the family, posse members, baby mommas) are not permitted to speak or correspond (publicly) with high school or junior college prospective student-athletes for the purposes of getting them to attend a particular college. We recommend all payouts be handled privately behind closed doors or in the front seat of cars parked on Rodeo Drive. Envelopes stuffed with cash should not bear the school’s letterhead. Any questions regarding the admissibility of a friendly gesture should be directed to the office of Mike Garret. When in doubt, feel free to make the move, just remember to cover up as best as possible. If questioned by anyone outside the Trojan Mafia remember to deny, deny, deny and blame UCLA if you can.

usc last minute offers and visits
just saw on espn biggins teasers that sc is making late offers/ official visits to a jc lineman and a lb prospect that weren’t really on the radar until now. goggins a jc dt from cerritos and lb vainuku. maybe im optimistic, but seems to me like a last minute scramble because maybe we’re getting guys they thought they were in the race for, maybe pullard and marsh?

I have info that I've been sworn to secrecy on
Let’s just say the battle isn’t over and his coach is deliberately feeding mis-information.
Owa - Thoughts?
He dropped OU and added OSU. You think that helps or hurts us? From and OSU perspective it has to be a huge positive because he could ahve just dropped OU.
I think it always helps that OSU
… has developed a decent reputation on their defense. I think it’s going to be tough to get him out but we will see.
His recruitment has been rather ugly
There’s been a lot of negative recruitment going on with Owa and I think that has had a lot to do with the seemingly unexpected sways from one school to another. If what I’m hearing is correct, right now it’s Owa liking Nebraska, his mom liking UCLA and his high school coach wanting Oregon St. so I really think this can go any way.

Well
it was Bobby Bowden who said you don’t recruit athletes, you recruit mothers. if you can win over the mother, you’ve won the son.

Don't really understand the Nebraska thing
Suh doesn’t play DE. If Pelini and staff are selling Suh’s development/success, how about BP? If we lose Moore, it’s critical we ink Heimuli, Marsh and Epenesa. We need the Big Uglies at DT. Got my fingers crossed that Signing Day is going to be epic once again for us.
owa
i think osu was always in it, but scouting sites had just listed his top 3 being us, neb, and ou

OSU was actually dropped
As I mentioned above, there has been a lot of negative recruiting going on and some of it scared him off of OSU and he wasn’t considering them. OSU got back in it though when they were able to disprove some of the things others had said about them.

Clarification please
I’m a UCLA graduate and will be attending a Kentwood HS game where Josh Smith plays. I plan to wear UCLA gear. Since he’s already committed to UCLA is there any problem with me speaking with him? What about if I attend a game of a non-committed recruit? I’m not offering money, fame, or fortune.. only perhaps encouraging them taking a good look at UCLA.
Well
You should make sure to check the NCAA definition re. “booster.” and then make sure you don’t communicate with Josh. I don’t think attending games wearing school’s shirt counts as “correspondence” if you are not interacting with him. But the key thing is to make sure you don’t fit the definition of a “booster” per NCAA rules.
Or tell everyone your name is Ed Orgeron
and that way everything is OK, because then the rules wouldn’t apply.
I like Fox 71's answer (LOL) but think I'll follow Nestor's advice.
I doubt I’ll even have a chance to say anything to him. I won’t have any special access, just a general admission ticket to the game, but want to be damn sure I don’t jeopardize the program or school.
NCAA rules refer to boosters
as "representatives of the institution’s athletic interests." These representatives include anyone who has:
• Participated in or has been a member of an organization promoting UCLA athletics programs
• Made financial contributions to the athletic department or to a UCLA booster organization;
• Arranged for or provided employment for enrolled student-athletes;
• Assisted or has been requested by UCLA staff to assist in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes;
• Assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families;
• Participated as a varsity athlete at UCLA; or
• Been involved otherwise in promoting UCLA athletics (including all season ticket holders).
Once an individual is identified as a "representative of the institution’s athletics interests," the person retains their identity forever.
In my case, I do not fit this definition of “booster,” unless this blog constitutes “membership in an organization” and I don’t think in any way it does.
What about
student season ticket holders and former student season ticket holders?

What about working for the athletic department
I ushered at Pauley, and I timed the eighth place finisher at the Pac-8 track finals one year.
What about
if your sport was dropped, are you considered a “varsity athlete”? Fucking Pete Dalis.
