As a stat junkie I felt bad about missing the +/- discussion (darned Baja California vacation) and decided I might throw out a statistic that I find less precarious. Over at NBA.com, a player's "efficiency" is quantified thusly: ((Points + Rebounds + Assists + Steals + Blocks) - ((Field Goals Att. - Field Goals Made) + (Free Throws Att. - Free Throws Made) + Turnovers)).
Typically the league leaders in "efficiency" also manage to lead the league in MVP votes. Here are last year's leaders in Efficiency per 48 minutes (amongst players that played more than 40 games):
1. Lebron James 2. Chris Paul 3. Dwayne Wade 4. Dwight Howard 5. Tim Duncan 6. Yao Ming 7. Andris Biedrins 8. Al Jefferson 9. Shaquille O'Neal 10. Kevin Garnett
If nothing else, this stat does a solid job of determining which players have the strongest positive influence (statistically speaking) on their teams. That's why I wasn't surprised when I ran the efficiency numbers (per 40 minutes) for our squad through the Wazzu game and came up with the following:
Name |
EFF/40 |
21.15 |
16.08 |
15.23 |
13.60 |
12.44 |
11.32 |
Jerime Anderson |
10.92 |
I think the above chart more accurately reflects the value of each player in our current rotation. The only major flaw I see in this stat is its inability to account for the defensive downside of players (I'm thinking of a certain slow-footed Serbian).
