Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Oregon) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Oregon Ducks, Jan 28, 2010 7:30 PM PST
Half an hour to go till Howland's UCLA Bruins (9-10, 4-3) tip off against Oregon Ducks (10-9, 2-5) on McArthur Court. This will be the Bruins' last game in what has been arguably one of the most intimidating venues in the West Coast. The Ducks are struggling though and as we have written in our pre-game notes they are going to be hungry and desperate for a win to break their 5 game losing streak. Will the Bruins show enough composure to play with poise and build on the consistent defensive efforts from last two games? No one here knows the answer and I guess that's why this season has been such an interesting roller-coaster trip (not necessarily fun).
Whatever happens on our side, you can count on the Ducks to come out all fired up. They pulled off a huge upset about three years ago against the eventual Pac-10 champions and Howland's defense has had issues with Oregon's athleticism and quickness in the past. It will be interesting to see how UCLA handles Porter with its new zone defense. In terms of historical numbers, UCLA is 32-19 (.627) all-time in Eugene, Ore. The Bruins have won nine of the last 10 games overall and four of the last five in McArthur Court. The last six games in Eugene have all been decided by nine points or less. The Bruins swept the season series last year, posting an 83-74 win at Oregon
Once again, Don MacLean will be doing the color commentary today which is always fun. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this party started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

Gotta love the Big-12 schedule
so that Fox Sports Rocky Mtn has no local games on Thursdays. So it’s Pac-10 all night here!
Go Bruins! Make it 3 in a row!

The Beavers look just like you’d expect from looking at their numbers. They’re tough defensively, but horrid on offense. Their offense is comical.

Always lucky..
…when the game is on in HD out here in Philly. Actually – here’s a reverse jinx: I don’t think I’ve ever watched the Bruins win in HD out here (during the regular season). Therefore, I sense an easy victory..
Also got Cal/Arizona St. on

The issue is whether I watch it. I feel I bring negative karma, and we have not had a picture of Jonathan BruinBabe2000, or a bunch of ragging by Nestor, or the requisite baking, etc. I’m really torn.

I went over to conquest comicals
There was no recap on yahoo about the trOJie-Beaver game, so I wanted to see what happened. It really looks like there is zero interest in the bball team over there. The pregame thread had one comment, and the game thread had five comments. That sort of apathy seems contrary to all the trOJie talk about family, fighting on, etc. I looks like a classic example of an empty bandwagon. I look forward to watching the massive evacuation of the football bandwagon when the ncaa drops whatever sized bombshell it drops.
I won't miss the crazy atmosphere
but am I the only one who is going to miss the old school gym charm of Mac Court? The balconies and intimacy always looked so great on TV. It felt like what college basketball should be, but everyone wearing blue instead.

Alas, I wouldn't know for two reasons
First, I’m still debating the karma issue.
Second, and more important, Mrs. Fox 71 could be, totally hypothetically, watching “Project Runway.” If ever there was a time to turn the sound off, it is when that show is on. I really feel all testosterone starting to dissapate, and for a geezer, there ain’t that much left in any event.

What do you mean
We have no NBA ready talent on the roster
well look at the improvement he made since his 1st game
luc could have been 1st rd pick if he left his 1st year
Huh?
What are you basing that comment on? Luc had no outside shot at the end of his first year. When he got drafted in first round after his third year, even then Milwaukee was taking a chance. You are making a lot of ignorant and uninformed observations.
interesting question on Luc though
people talked about him as a potential future lottery pick after our final four run. Might have gone earlier than he eventually went if he had come out (based on potential – his outside shot didn’t develop into a huge weapon in 2 more years…)
by britishbruin on Jan 28, 2010 8:20 PM PST up reply actions

Trigger Happy
Drago is getting a little trigger happy, everytime he gets the ball outside the arc you can see he wants to take that shot.
He made his last three 3's and it was an open look
not a bad shot, but we need to slow it down and play for inside looks
yeah
at this point, I’d like to see RN try to put Dunigan in foul trouble – doesn’t he have 2 already?

Question
For any gurus out there:
Does taking a charge like a screen have more incentive to call it than putting your hands up and taking a charge?
Formerly ucla13_usc9
i liked to keep my hands down to guard the jewels
by AllHailMightyBruins on Jan 28, 2010 8:20 PM PST via mobile up reply actions
You look more guilty if your hands were up
plus hands down lets you brace a little for the impact. There’s no de jure rule, but refs are much more likely to call the “screen” looking one.
I agree
but the weird thing is, that means you’re deliberately not trying to contest and just trying to draw a player control foul.
by britishbruin on Jan 28, 2010 8:26 PM PST up reply actions
no
IMO, you don’t want to be moving your arms at impact. Either up or down doesn’t matter, but you don’t want to be moving them because the refs will see movement

I’ve noticed this since he got here, and you could hear him just now on tv, he just starts yelling at the person he is defending. I have seen him just screaming into players ears why defending them. I love it.

by insomniacslounge on Jan 28, 2010 8:28 PM PST up reply actions
his offense
or lack thereof, i really feel like is a result of howlands lack of confidence, some players grow under howlands harsh style, others wilt, and keefe is the latter.
by bruintrumpet on Jan 28, 2010 8:29 PM PST up reply actions
luc had a lot of freedom
he never figured out how to shoot
dude i went to the same games stand on the same stands as you did
he hit that one 3 to win the game early season, and got a little trigger happy, but shots won’t falling, and he simply stopped shooting, we can pull out his shot attempts through the years, stayed the same, or actually declined…. but also because klove took out all the space down low during luc’s 4th year
i mean maybe it's not the freedom problem
but luc totally lost confidence (my bad 3rd year) in his shot towards the end, he is passing out open jumpshots on the FT line
Wait
Wasn’t it publicly known that Howland was going to let him play outside more often?
Formerly ucla13_usc9
yes
and then it didn’t work out. Plus, we didn’t get as much from PAA as a power forward as expected his junior year, and more from RW as a guard, which pushed Luc to the 4 more again.
by britishbruin on Jan 28, 2010 8:33 PM PST up reply actions
WTH are you talking about?
Luc played for 3 years and since when did Luc lack confidence on offense? Dude … you are offering some really ignorant takes. You probably should step back, read up on our team and watch the closely.
Howland always gave Luc enough room to operate. He just wasn’t a great shooter but found a way to generate offense through rebounding and defense, and being around the ball.
Not as agressive as he has been in the past years.
Not sure if it’s the injuries or confidence. Rarely makes a move to the basket with the ball.
he normally does a good job
of screening for other players, when playing against Man-D.
Also, his passing is ok, but this zone of Oregon looks like it leaves more space on the outside than on the interior passing.

This game can be a REAL turning point
Getting a big lead on the road, blowing it, and coming back to pull out a win is the hallmark of a steady team. We have to close this out.
i say this because our D has been strong
And a 3rd win in a row would really solidify us as a 40-min team, finally
Huge game for both teams
My understanding is that it will likely be us, USC and Oregon battling it out for the second and third Pac-10 berth. Beating the Ducks is huge.

haha, he is dead for most
I spend a lot of time with him at those games, but i do disagree with him on that point. They have a losing record in pac-10 play, something like 3-4, and they live and die by the three. Not a recipe for success in WBB. And they lack a true post player, Ironmonger could be good if she slimmed down a bit more and fouled a lot less.

Why does Keefe get called for those?
It’s not like he swings his elbows more lustily than any other player…
he's too hesistant
could’ve drove inside, but pump faked and dribbled backwards and got trapped against the sideline
You're allowed to catch someone with an elbow
You get the space extended to your elbows and aren’t supposed to be called for that unless you’re swinging your elbows faster than your body. If Keefe swings his elbows with his body, like he did, it’s not supposed to be a foul. Nothing specific to JK, I just hate when they call that because it’s not a foul.

And I am not a fan of the new design, but building costs are not the same. Building in LA is a lot more expensive than Oregon. I’m not offerring it as an excuse, but more money would definitely help and without deep pockets forget about it. I always felt that financial decisions are driving the decision and thus a half assed renovation. Not only that, they’re jacking up tix prices and sticking it to long time season tix holders.

what i mean is
land @ LA is expensive, you can’t just buy land off bel air and build a brand new court…. that’s why we can’t build an nfl stadium in LA but have to build it far far away
The land wasn't the problem with the renovation
and land costs had nothing to do with the NFL stadium going up in Industry. The stadium is going into Industry because it is outside of the city limits and an incompetent city council can’t block it out there. Land costs had zero to do with it and have nothing to do with our Pauley renovation.

Howland’s teams have never been conscious of the clock in late game situations. We run 35 seconds down playing for a shot that we could have gotten just by committing to a drive earlier in the possession. We leave little to no time left for a rebound or defensive stand. I understand waiting for a good shot, but we mostly do the listless passing around the perimeter that just wastes time

the game I just watched was characterized mostly by our complete lack of point guard play; along with typically shoddy defense by Dragovic very slightly offset by his scoring; and a complete inability of our team to rebound the ball. There is plenty of blame to go around.

Rebounding.
UCLA got killed on the boards again. Some have suggested, including Donnie Mac, that it is because in the zone defense the players cannot locate the opponent and put a body on him when the ball is in the air.
I think part of what kills us on the boards is the fact that we NEVER, repeat, NEVER push the ball on offense after we get a defensive rebound. As such, our opponents know that they can send extra guys to the glass and, even if they do not get the ball, we will not push the ball and exercise a numbers advantage to get an easy score.
An analogy is throwing the ball deep in football. If you never throw deep, defenses will stack the box. Similarly, if we never push the ball (throw deep), whether we have numbers or not, teams will send their guards and guys like E.J. Singler to get rebounds (stack the box).
Even if UCLA opened up the offense a bit and tried to push the ball on offense even a few times a game (even if they failed in those attempts), I think that this would keep the other team honest, make them keep their guards back outside the free throw line and not rebounding, and would help our rebounding game overall. It would be worth it in the long run. Right now, opposing coaches know that they can throw the kitchen sink at the glass and they will not get burned on the break.
I miss K Love and his outlet passes.
The part about pushing the ball
THAAAAAAANK YOU!
How many times did Nikky pull the board down to look how cool he was instead of looking for a downcourt opportunity? GYAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!
UCLA Football, please make the switch to black cleats
good thoughts and probably true
- but no one on the team and outlet pass
- no on on the team knows how to run fast break
i am curious
were we a good rebounding team in man to man? i don’t have the stats but I don’t remember that being the case….
But you are right, if teams know you favor a slow pace, like CBH does (look up the kenpom stats if you doubt this) then they will keep guys around to board because they know you aren’t gonna speed up the game. Good insight.

however boxing out would solve all the problems
oh wait….. we don’t
drago have no idea even what a box out is
reeves try to but is a little too short
TH doesn’t box out but is quick enough to snatch it out of the air when he is around the area
roll….
ML….. standing somewhere waiting for an outlet pass?
FYI, just checked the box score.
Of Oregon’s 11 offensive boards, 6 were by guards or E. J. Singler (the latter of which plays small forward but is hardly cut from the board crasher cloth). Singler had a game changing tip in in OT.

He is just not a point guard
He is an ok 2 guard with low basketball IQ. The only fundamentally sound pg on this team is a walkon who was benched after making a spectacular play in the second half. I am so disgusted and I don’t even know why I care so much.
I am going to sleep. I think Ryan will do the post game thread and will prolly be lot more charitable to Rago. I am going to take it out on him and Howland in the am.
live by the drago..
.. die by the drago
Drago did however show up to grab a couple offensive rebounds I suppose. Makes 3s early.. bricks 3s for 14 mins… doesn’t hustle back and gives armstead easy assts.. gets a couple of board off miss fts.. doesn’t overplay a shooter with time winding down on the clock.. makes a nice catch on a pass to lay one in.. with 10 seconds left he’s looking for a quick 2 , only to get fouled and miss the front end.. Drago giveth and Drago taketh away.
Most of the game when TH is not rebounding on defense and RN on offense then no one is rebounding. TH will be great when he figures out when to attack and when not to attack on offense.
Our attacking the zone blew chunks after about the 10 minute mark. We lacked aggression. On one hand we did a good job not wasting the dribble, on the other hand we were content to pass it around the perimeter. We need flashers to the free throw line constantly to break down the defense (not Keefe there, because you need a player that is a threat to make a basket) Sometimes we figured out how to get it to RN in there, but we need to figure that out earlier in a clock and he needs to learn to recognize when and if to work it back out. You can destroy the zone if you get it into capable hands in the paint and we failed miserably on way to many possessions by turning into the long ball shooting team.
It is mischaracterized that you shoot teams out of a zone.. our zone has been successful for exactly that reason.. teams settle for the long ball. You beat a zone by breaking it down on the interior getting everyone out of position that yields open shots from a variety of areas. That out of position consequently allows you to gain offensive rebounding possibilities. If you just settle for the long ball it is easy to defensive rebound.
