Recruiting Race: UCLA Pulls Ahead Of Southern Cal With A Big Commitment From Hawaii
It's beautiful snowy morning out here in the East Coast.
It got off to a perfect start after reading sam_in_hb's fanpost about our latest commitment from Hawaii: DT Sealli Epenesa from Hawaii, who turned down among other schools Oregon State and Washington, to sign up with Rick Neuheisel's UCLA. Tracy Pierson from Bruin Report Online has little more:
The 6-2, 315-pound Sealii Epenesa from Honolulu (Haw.) Iolani verbally committed to UCLA Friday.
Epenesa told the Honolulu Advertiser of his commitment.
Epenesa chose the Bruins over Oregon State, Baylor and Hawaii. He also had offers from Washington, Colorado and Texas Tech.
Epenesa was named the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's Defensive Player of the Year this past season.
Many scouts consider him vastly under-rated as a three-star prospect.
tWWL has a little highlight clip of Epenesa. At 6-2, 315 he certainly has the NFL size and from what I have read about this kid, he has a nasty streak which is perfect for a DT. So much for all the nonsense we have heard over the years about Rick Neuheisel not caring too much about recruiting guys who muck it up in the trenches.
Epenesa has been one of our key targets all along this recruiting season as he is going to be a crucial part of our need to fill out the DT need in our depth chart. It is also important because there are good chances that we could lose Julius Moore due to academic issues (which he admitted himself) to Northwest School. We could lose one more for the same reason but we will see.
Here is where it gets more fun though. With Epenesa on board the number of Bruin committments at this snapshot of time is at 20, but even more interestingly CRN's UCLA has now pulled ahead of Lamey's Southern Cal in latest scout.com rankings. Bruins have now climbed up to number 15, while Southern Cal is at number 17. Obviously we are no where close to being done. Lot of things will go down in the closing days. Yet to see UCLA winning hand to hand combat on recruiting trail coming off a 7 win season (BTW how huge was that bowl win?) gives me the chills to think what CRN will be able to do once he finishes the rebuilding project in Westwood. Simply remarkable. More after the jump.
Here is our updated target list:
- Owamagbe Odighizuwa- DE, Portland, OR (Nebraska, Oregon, UCLA, Oregon St.)
- Ego Ferguson- DT, Chatham, VA (Cal, Florida St., LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Maryland, Nebraska, UCLA, Oklahoma)
- Ricky Heimuli- DT, Salt Lake City, UT (UCLA, BYU, USC, Utah, Oregon, Oregon St, Washington)
- Dietrich Riley- DB, La Canada, CA (UCLA, USC, Tennessee, Notre Dame, LSU)
- Josh Shirley- LB, Fontana, CA (Arizona, Miami, Notre Dame, UCLA, Oregon, Tennessee, USC, Wahsington)
- Anthony Jefferson- ATH, Los Angeles, CA (Cal, Oregon, UCLA)
- Hayes Pullard- ATH, Los Angeles, CA (Arizona St., Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington, Notre Dame)
- Jordan Zumwalt- LB, Huntington Beach, CA (Stanford, UCLA, USC)
- Giovanni Di Poalo- OL, Ventura, CA (USC, UCLA)
I mean if we just get Heimuli, Jefferson, Pullard, and somehow manage to pull in some from other list, UCLA easily has a chance of finishing in the top-10. Don't forget there might be couple of here and there who are being recruited and not on anyone's radar publicly.
I have been an online recruiting junkie for 10+ years. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS MUCH FUN following UCLA FOOTBALL RECRUITING. And I am getting the feeling we are just getting started.
GO BRUINS.

Keep the big uglies coming!! Amazing turnaround in the last 2-3 years, these are the kids that make skilled players shine. Can’t wait now to see them play, I know we’re still a little ways off until we see all of CRN’s recruits develop, but these are players in the recent past that would of laughed at the thought of being a Bruin.
Welcome to Westwood Epenesa!
Some of our commits
Wouldn’t even have been approached during the previous coaching regimes due to variety of factors including but not limited to incompetence, insecurity and a total lack of vision with regards to potential of UCLA football.
Watched the tape
The kid has a very good body but seems a little raw from a technique standpoint. Has a tendency to raise up a bit at the snap which will get him neutralized quickly at the next level. With some work, he may be a real diamond in the rough. His strength will determine how much he plays next year. Nice commit for CRN and the team. The right momentum going into next week.
Keep that Island pipeline comin'!!!
It’s great to see that UCLA is starting to really tap into the Islands. Just keep ’em coming!!
Island boys
How many recruits have we pulled from the beautiful state of Hawaii? That’s great if we truely have a strong pipeline. Wasn’t chow in Oahu a couple months ago

Chow held a football camp in Oahu last summer, along with other D1 coaches.
He is our main recruiter for Polynesia.
GO COLTS!!!!!
Great idea.
Seeing our coaches all over the place is such a pleasant change.
Feeling fairly optimistic
about Owa and Riley, too. But you are right, just getting 3 of those 5 would be outstanding.
"I don't forget very much" Rick Neuheisel, 11/28/09
Riley and Owa
would probably be the best two for UCLA out of the remaining players imho.
Ego is out?
My understanding is that he’s eliminated his choices to Notre Dame, Cal, LSU, Florida State, and Miami, at least from the chatter over at BRO. Not that BRO is the most reliable source, but I wouldn’t be shocked since the kid is from Virginia and Aramide Olanyian and Damien Thigpen aside, we don’t traditionally pull a lot of guys from there.
Yeah, his name hasn't been coming up a lot
Then again I have a feeling we might be in some surprises on NSD. We will probably miss on few of our final targets listed above, but I just have this weird feeling (in a good way).
Yeah
Ego looks to be out, but I’m keeping him on the list because I have the same feeling N does. I don’t see it happening with Ego, but I wouldn’t call it an impossibility.

If you like recruiting
it’s definitely worth it. They’re the best, IMO, when it comes to UCLA recruiting coverage.

I used to be subscribed
But as a student with a part time job and trying to make rent in Westwood these days, I had to unfortunately cut it from my budget.
It really was a great service though, and when I graduate and start working full-time, I will re-subscribe with BRO.
Thank god for BruinsNation, by far the best UCLA sports blog on the web.
SO glad I got the EagleBank Bowl shirt in the mail this week...
… ’cause that game will prove to be the start of something BIG in college football, folks.

I'm in Knoxville
and its cold here too! Snowed all afternoon and night yesterday! I’m happily stuck in the house, but did some driveway sledding on a trash can lid this morning! LOL

my old teacher mrs. Dipalo said she’s heading to CRN’s house for dinner.. should be more good news for Bruins!

Not a huge fan of the ranking system
Seems to me we should be higher. This ranking system goes off total number of recruits, not necessarily quality. We’ve got more top 150 and 4 star recruits than many of the teams above us, they just have greater numbers. In terms of quality, we look to be top 10, especially with another big name or two.

If we were to go by Rivals' average star ranking
We would be tied for 11th.

If you go by average star rankings
then u$c* might still be ahead of us because they have a few 5 star guys. They seem to be taking a lot of receivers this year. They have, what, the top two and another highly rated guy likely coming in (who kiffy was trying to get whilst at Tenn?)?
Has anyone noticed
that Marquis Jackson DE (JC) is a “soft verbal” now according to scout? What’s up with that? It seems like SUC is trying to grab him.
Yea
I think he means Moore. Haven’t heard anything about Flowers looking elsewhere.

This may have been addressed already, but...
how is it that Rivals has UCLA with 19 commits while Scout and ESPN have 20. Is there such thing as a “soft commit?”
correction
ESPN also has 19. But in any event, these numbers have seldom matched.
My guess as to the reason Scout has 20
and this is without comparing the lists, is that Scout has Ayers on the list. He’s going to greyshirt in all likelihood, which means he’s a member of the 2011 class. It isn’t official though so you can really put him in either class and be right. It’s why I don’t have Ayers on my list.

Oops
Meant Yates, not Ayers. That’s what I get for writing that while watching videos of Akeem.

They shouldn't count yandell
then because he’s already enrolled and would have counted with last years class
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing" Homer Simpson
Thanks for the clarification.
Can a greyshirt participate with the team during summer practice? What about weight and endurance training at the school during summer? Greyshirt is a newer term to me, and I can’t find a lot of information about it so far (gotta expand my search, I guess).
If anyone posts a link with a clear definition, I would be grateful.
Thanks.
