Center Court: UCLA Basketball (@ Oregon State) Open Thread
UCLA Bruins at Oregon St. Beavers, Jan 30, 2010 4:30 PM PST
Here we go. For the first time in a while Ben Howland's Bruins (9-11, 4-4) are taking on a team which has the same pathetic overall record and below them in conference standings. That's right Oregon State (9-11, 3-5) fresh off a big win (for them) against Southern Cal is looking to end a nasty streak against the Bruins. The Bruins have won the last nine games by an average of 25.2 points per game (690-463), including the last four in Corvallis by an average of 17.5 points per game (288-218). Last year, the Bruins won their Pac-10 opener at OSU 69-46.
So will the Bruins rebound after their dispiriting but not so surprising loss against one of the worst teams in probably the worst major D-1 conference in America? No one knows. Expect the Beavers come out all fired up and ready to go. It will be interesting to see if the Bruins can show any kind of fight and hustle after they got outwilled by the Ducks (especially around the rim) on Thursday night. The game will be shown in Prime Ticket. The two guys who will call the action are Drew Bontadelli (play-by-play) and Mike Wozniak (analyst). I have no clue who they are.
Anyway, the tip off is scheduled for 4:35 pm PST. You can read up on all of our musings leading up to this game here. If you want to follow the game online you can do so via our official site. As always, we will be here in the game threads with our rapid fire takes and commentary. So let's get this show started. Fire away.
GO BRUINS.

what I'm hoping for today:
that ASU-Cal WBB doesn’t go to overtime
ML could learn a lot from that
little head fake, get defender off the feet, get inside the arc and put the ball in the basket

you haven't missed much so far
although dragovic just hit a 3 to start the game

presumably he's also been responsible
for multiple points given up?
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 4:39 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah but his last pass was weak and he just made a TO
Look I like him but he should not start. he is a good 7th man
ND draws a charge
though both charge calls were a bit soft, but cancel out…
love honeycutt, but he sure does make things harder than they have to be
when he’s around the hoop

MAH is out right now
Lee Roll Honeycutt Dragovic Keefe on the court. Pass to TH in the corner was ND shaping to shoot and passing

Need our forwards to keep up the off-the-ball movement
RN, ND, have both had easy points cutting across from the corner
Watch the last half hour of the Boure Identity on USA
It’s more exciting. Matt Damon is looking sharper than any of our clowns.
For some reason
I always forget what the story of that movie is.
So many double-crossing and conspiracies going on
didn't he already attain Supremacy?

This game is ugly enough as it is
Don’t need the refs calling ticky-tack fouls to top it off

TH has fast hands on steals
RN does a better job than anyone else of taking sharp passes in traffic and getting the ball up
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 5:12 PM PST up reply actions
JA blows it
he even looked the pass. MAH please.
Thank god we don't drink everytime ucla turns the ball over
We’d all be dead by now

this is stanford all over again
except they don’t have a landry fields to make us pay for it.
ML drives to the basket
finally! been waiting for him to do so for 2 games
FSN seriously..
Calling a 3pt shot the Denny’s 3 pointer of the game 2 minutes into the game.
Misspelling Lew Alcindor with “Lou”
Who is he?
Why is Howland putting him in? He is going to f**k this all up now without having a baller like Ragovic on the court.
Credit the coaching
He has been wrestling with a difficult problem
Howland has been trying to find a way to get his regular players fewer minutes, but he hasn’t had a chance to do it since Anderson went down with a hip flexor.
but after some serious thought, he may have come up with something…
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 5:21 PM PST up reply actions
Am I seeing that right?
We’re the one perfect from the FT line??
TH has good hands
Love the way he grabs rebounds with authority for a skinny guy.
Over/under
In another thread I proposed an over/under on the number of times the announcer mention Michelle Obama. I proposed 2.5 as the number but only to stimulate illegal betting. These guys are gonna blow past that number before halftime is over.
by peggysue69 on Jan 30, 2010 5:19 PM PST via mobile reply actions
Way too low
The idea is to set the line somewhat close to a realistic number. Has to be high enough to get some people to take the under – no way the FSN announcers are going to let that family connection go without at least a few mentions.

I can't believe how the Bruins fell apart
with Ragovic on the bench. Good thing we didn’t do the same against Oregon.
how ever did we go on that 8-0 run
With that unit on the floor and our star on the bench??
we went on a 2-0 run with that unit on the court.
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions
Should have been more clear
I meant the world didn’t come to an end with 2 mins left in the half when our superstar Rainbow Warrior headed to the bench.
no, I understood you
just clarifying the 8-0 run. should have been more clear on who I was replying to, I guess.

18 days to baseball reporting already?
good, anything to keep my mind away from this team…
We are winning on boards and at FTline -- Uh, is this the right game?
we are 5-5 at the line, they are 0-4,
boards 14-8
sjh
there actually should be teams worse than us in this conference
Louisville, KY for UCLA class of '87
we're giving up lots of turnovers
which means we don’t end up taking many shots, which means their defensive rebound total is a little low. But not enough to account for a 6-board difference.
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 5:34 PM PST up reply actions
On a serious note
The OR school are bad teams. The PAC-10 is down. We are more athletic than both of them. We should win BUT if the game is close the home court will likely make the difference.
And no, I am not saying we are good. But CBH must get us to 500 at season end and we need to win games like this if we are going to accomplish this goal he mentioned a few weeks back.
Good god this conference is a mess this year
It’s astonishing how bad every team is
of course I say that and the one Pac-10 team that makes it into the tourney will probably somehow get to the Final Four
by UCLABruins4Ever on Jan 30, 2010 5:35 PM PST reply actions
No way this year
Agree on how bad the conference is but no way any PAC-10 school gets to the final four. Maybe an NIT champ.
De La Salle or Loyola (or whoever is good now days) could give them too much of a fight
formerly bruinhoo
One bid conference
which means essentially the whole regular season is pretty irrelevant; winner of the tournament will get the bid (where we will be the de facto home team).

Come on N...
clowns at least provide some enjoyment to those witnessing their act.

8-0 run with drago on the bench to end the first half
what does Ben Howland do: Stick him to start the second half and watch the lead evaporate. Pathetic.
by silverlakebruin on Jan 30, 2010 5:39 PM PST reply actions
silver to be precised
Rago went down at 6-0 mark but the point is Lane did nothing to screw anything up.
Ben Ball Clowns
I think you might be on to something there N

Just caught up on dvr
And these turnovers are embarassing
i get more depressed the more I watch
thank god we’re a football school and signing day is coming
yup
no rhyme or reason to where we are trying to put the ball

so, he only meets one criteria, and no he won’t get drafted

goodluck, zero ideas....
Was Howland in a nice suit?
More please
ML needs to do that more, especially against this team and this defense
Honeycutt is NOT having a good game at all
just one of those freshman games

Unfortunately for us
Dan Quayle had a better game in his line of work than our Ben Ball Clowns. At least Quayle won something here and there. Our guys not so much.
our level bad
but maybe we can make another 40 turnovers and test it
Yes
This is a must win game for out NIT hopes
this is a must win game
for me not to want to off myself for watching it
Louisville, KY for UCLA class of '87
Sure they would because a lot of old fans are still under the impression that Wooden coaches this team
by UCLABruins4Ever on Jan 30, 2010 5:56 PM PST up reply actions
I think you underestimate the delusional nature of many older fans
by UCLABruins4Ever on Jan 30, 2010 6:01 PM PST up reply actions
I AM AN OLDER FAN
At the final 4 in 1968 when we trampled Elvin Hayes in the semis. We are not delusional. We are older and have seen many ups and downs since.
If this was a Wooden team, there would only be two, maybe three
guys on the court. Everyone else would be benched for lack of performance.
Disagree slightly
We should finish above 500 so “great” turnaround no but turnaround yes.
OSU coach's brother-in-law had a bad year
He was forced to move from a nice house in Chicago into public housing in DC. His mother-in-law moved in with him. Things got so bad that his wife had to grow food out on the back lawn.
Geezer in training.
much as I hate to praise ND
that was a pretty awesome pass
Let's put them away now
This is a bad team, let’s build a lead.
lee is the worst at the fast break
he had a layup
part undersized
and part trying to play in control due to fouls? TH with 3 I think
by britishbruin on Jan 30, 2010 6:03 PM PST up reply actions
wtf? another sptr call
upthread someone said that the ref’s would keep osu in the game.
Looks right
sjh
That's why we need a lead
close game and calls may make difference for OSU.
