According to Jon Gold of Daily News sports, "Jordan Zumwalt and Dietrich Riley are on unofficial visits to UCLA tonight..."

Hopefully we can give these guys a good last impression.

Yep

Both of these guys are taking an “unofficial” to UCLA after their official visits to Southern Cal. lol Note I believe Zumwalt took another “unofficial” to UCLA right before he went over to Southern Cal.

by Nestor on Jan 31, 2010 5:42 PM PST reply actions

I just saw this

and this can only be considered good news. They just left their official visits to USC, so unless they are just stand-up guys and want to tell CRN to his face that they are going to be Trojams………then this is good news. That typically doesn’t happen often, or ever. So just based on history, this is great news that they have built up a good enough relationship with CRN and his staff to come to Westwood right after their official to South Central.

I think if we can somehow get a verbal from these two before signing day, it could really help us with Heimuli, Owa, and Pullard.

I swear, if CRN somehow pulls the impossible and is able to get Riley, Zumwalt, Pullard, Jefferson, Owa, and Heimuli………..then he is a god. If he is able to get 4 of the 6, he is the man. Keep working coach. There isn’t a better university in the world, and these guys are smart enough to see through Lamey’s schtick this weekend and come to Westwood tonight to hear the truth from a man with some characater. You go coach!

by muircoach on Jan 31, 2010 5:44 PM PST reply actions

I don't think...

…we get both Pullard and Zumwalt. I’d expect one of them, but not both. Owa, I think, ends up at Cal, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we brought in Jefferson, Heimuli, and either Zumwalt or Pullard. I think in the end, Riley sticks with the chumps from across town.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 6:14 PM PST up reply actions

I think Owa eliminated Nebraska B

It’s either Oregon State or us I believe. That’s what the latest indications are at least.

by Nestor on Jan 31, 2010 6:16 PM PST up reply actions

really?

wow that’s shocking to me. I expected him there too.

Has there ever been a player better than Detlef Schrempf?

by bucknellbruin on Jan 31, 2010 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

If that's true

I really like our chances. I thought he’d end up at Cal or Nebraska, and with him eliminating both programs, then that’s huge for us. Not that OSU is a weak school, but you have to love our chances with him if Nebraska is out of the picture.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:07 PM PST up reply actions

But we have the edge...

…in a lot of things that appeal to young men: location, atmosphere, diversity of the female student body, and well, our Dance Team. ;)

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

Definitely

Also, let’s put this is way with Nebraska out of the picture (at least from what we have heard via background chatter), our chances improved from 33% to 50%. :-) That’s something.

Got to love Malcolm though

Kid is showing his true Bruin spirit and he’s not even officially a Bruin yet. Very excited to see what that kid can do in the backfield.

exactly

I just sent a message to a “hardcore” bruin fan that was commenting all over Riley’s facebook. Hopefully he’ll take my advice and shut up until next week.

by not announcing it or doing anything with the press and instead faxing in his LOI and calling it a day? He adds to the intrigue, but keeps things quieter.

Oh I meant in a positive way

I love the fact that he is not doing a big announcement (I think Barr did the same). It’s very old school. I meant that … if it all lines up for us on Wed … it’s gonna be some kind of explosion. But I will keep my expectations modest. I am already pretty ecstatic in how it has all turned out so far this year.

by Nestor on Jan 31, 2010 7:17 PM PST up reply actions

Oh most definitely

I don’t blame the kids for creating some drama if they want either. This is a once in a lifetime thing for them so I don’t mind if they have fun with it. My comment wasn’t meant to sound negative or really positive either. I was just kinda typing what I was thinking.

Ryan, Nestor, Group

Do you think Pullard and Zumwalt are watching each other? Do they both play MLB?

by uclaves on Jan 31, 2010 7:29 PM PST up reply actions

Given our depth at DT

If we got both, we’d be more suited to run a 3-4 defense, but I can’t see that happening. Since none of our current DTs have the size to be a NT in a 3-4 scheme and all of our LBs are pretty young (except for Ayers), I don’t think it’d be a great fit.

I’d rather have two good MLB recruits and not know how to play, rather than have neither. Those are the kinds of problems I hope our Bruins have down the line.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so

I think both will make whatever decision they make independent of each other.

Per the rumors on Scout

Pullard is down to USC and UCLA. According to posters there, his Facebook reads:

“USC OR UCLA??? WHICH 1 IS IT GOING TO BE…..HMMM”

Apparently, in the comment thread our new commit, Cassius Marsh, chipped in:

dog be a bruin…. im telling you we are gonna take over LA and we will actually get to play in bowl games….

Good to see our recruits trying to help us out, and even more amusing since our recruits are telling their peers U$C is going to get nailed by the NCAA.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:18 PM PST reply actions

that's really interesting

Are there any restrictions on other recruits attempting to sway an undecided kid?

by longbordr52 on Jan 31, 2010 7:38 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so

It seems to be pretty commonplace.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:40 PM PST up reply actions

Nope

and it’s very common. Especially guys who commit very early in the process spend months and months in the ears of other recruits trying to get them to join them. A couple years back Tony Dye and his entire family was instrumental in landing a couple guys.

Charles O'Bannon

was instrumental in getting the class of Toby, JR, Kris and Omma. Kids during that time just wanted to be around Chucky! He had that magnetic personality. I remember when we were able to beat out Kentucky/Pitino for O’Bannon, we were excited about CO was going to help bring in a banner class the following season. And boy did that ever work out. Good times.

by Nestor on Jan 31, 2010 7:45 PM PST up reply actions

I remember that.

I walked out of Bruin Brawn and saw Harrick and asked him was was up with COB he just smiled and said “We got him”

Doubt it

As they are not students/Varsity athletes at the scuool yet, I don’t think they have any restrictions.

With two days remaining

Why would two highly talented recruits with two days remaining be for national letter of intent
day take a last minute visit? I think it’s all good news for UCLA.
GO BRUINS.

by dwayne1881 on Jan 31, 2010 7:51 PM PST reply actions

Usually it's good for us...

…but sometimes kids want to see all their options one last time before they choose. You could make the argument that Zumwalt is not sold on Stanford and that’s why he’s visiting UCLA and U$C. On the other hand, you could say the kid wants to make sure UCLA and U$C weren’t for him before pulling the trigger on Stanford.

Think back to when you were trying to decide where to go to school. It’s a big decision and you want to make sure you get it right.

by Bellerophon on Jan 31, 2010 7:56 PM PST up reply actions

honestly, the kid has to be torn between Stanford and UCLA

Both have great campuses, athletic traditions and academics. It’ll come down to if he likes the coaches at UCLA or Stanford better I think and playing time. But he’s a middle linebacker and Reggie Carter just left, so maybe that’s swinging it in our favor. And he’s a Southern California kid I believe so he’ll be closer to home. So Cal is probably out of it, unless Monte Kiffin made a big impression.

I also think seeing a big beast 4 star guy like Cassius Marsh change commitment will help us as well. Can you imagine Zumwalt, Marsh, Heimuli, Epanesa, Pullard, Owa, and some of the guys we already have like Holmes, Ayers, and Graham competing for that front 7? Good God!

Marquis Jackson Update

http://wearesc.com/news/story.php?article=2902

Rumors about Jackson’s academic standing have been floating around the internet during the past several weeks, but he addressed them head on.

(At UCLA that is, not as just$c*, where they get their bank accounts, plasma TV’s, baby’s mama’s boss’s car, etc., all lined up.)

What happens at UCLA? And what can they show on a Sunday night? I think our campus shows better in the daytime. Who does what with these guys?
