UCLA @ Cal Full Highlights

Due to popular request (especially for Bruins abroad) and having slept on it and recovered enough to watch the game again, here are the full video highlights. Who knows? Maybe we'll all remember this as the game that turned it all around . . . (I can dream, can't I?).

First up (for LVBruin) is proof of the [in]competence of our SPTRs:

Years ago, some of the girls on my daughter's 10 and under club team used to get away that that kind of traveling. Nice to know where our SPTRs learned their reffing skills.

Star-divide

Here are the full highlights. I included some of the clanker shots and turnovers so those who didn't see the game get a sense of how frustrating it was, especially the first half. Both Drag and Lee were jacking it up; Drag recovered his form in the second half, but Lee never did.

Can these Bruins pull out another unlikely win against Furd? Stay tuned!

Go Bruins!

Unbelievable

And the SPTR was right there.

That is Hall of Shame bad.

That's not a walk

It’s a journey. It’s clear the seeing eye dogs being used by PAC-10 officials need new glasses. Arf!

he landed with 2 feet

which means he can pivot off either… the refs didn’t know which foot he wanted to pivot off, so let him pivot off both…

I didn't see the game live...

by the looks of the highlights, I have no idea how we won the game. It’s ridiculous that JA still plays like he hasn’t adjusted to the speed of the college game. We still make too many “space cadet” mistakes — passing to nobody, dribbling off our feet, no concept of spacing.

I sincerely hope that CBH didn’t draw up the last possession to put the game in JA’s hands. Or did we run out of timeouts by that point and had to rely on the poise of our players to come up with the game-winning play on the fly?

by ishXdavid on Jan 7, 2010 2:31 PM PST reply actions

The game winning play came after Cal called two timeouts

after scoring to go up 75-74 with 21 seconds to play. So Montgomery probably told his players to ensure no Bruin touches the ball except for JA. Strategy almost worked. :)

by Telemachus on Jan 7, 2010 2:49 PM PST up reply actions

on the previous play

didn’t they actually do the opposite, and keep JA away from the ball, forcing MR and ND to run some weird give and go at the end of the shot clock which ended with MR taking the pass off his knee?

by britishbruin on Jan 7, 2010 2:58 PM PST up reply actions

At least Dragovic hit a Bruin with his pass attempt :)

And he was attempting a bounce pass (even though he bounced it off Roll’s leg or foot) . Meanwhile, JA tried to jam a chest high pass between two Kal players. A better angle and a simple bounce pass would have gotten it to Reeves.

Drago's pass to Roll

Predictably I was furious and livid at the time (lol) but this am Roll mentioned in the DN piece (I think) that he mishandled the ball and credited Drago with a good piece. No peeps, I am not developing soft spot for our Bricklayer from Belgrade. So settle down.

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 3:16 PM PST up reply actions

I still wonder...

…what CBH saw in Drago that made him offer a scholarship. He has zero lateral quickness (even for a forward). He probably had plans to use him as a zone breaker, but now is forced to start him. Who knows?

by hicalliber on Jan 7, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

Just have to shake my head

He is going to go 1-9 from 3 point line on Saturday.

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 3:24 PM PST up reply actions

come on, N

you are so negative. 2-12 is more realistic.

seriously, though…we need to develop some kind of efficiency stat like the NBA has. it means nothing to me when a guy scores 30 points (on 30% shooting) but gives up 35 on the defensive end. while ML might not shoot well, at least he is a defensive stopper. man, i miss AA, DC, and LRMAM…such efficient players on both ends of the floor.

2-12?

Are we talking 3ptrs or FTs?

Go Bruins!

You beat me to it.

I was about to say how optimistic Nes was being.
Thanks Tele for that, especially the JK dance moves.
I am a big JK fan(don’t ask) and I had to laugh at that. It was worse watching it again.

maybe he thought he could teach the kid to play defense

Unfortunately, ND hasn’t. I think that ND probably feels that his offense (when he hits) offsets the weak defense. It doesn’t! Most CBH players get better on the defensive end. ND is the exception, but I wouldn’t blame coach for that. He’s always played a ‘supporting’ role coming off the bench as the 3-point threat; he’s never come in as a defensive stopper. To think he’ll change his ways is naive at this point. (PS: I hope I’m naive!)

by GoSolar on Jan 7, 2010 4:46 PM PST up reply actions

Again to be fair

ND has improved defensively a little from his first two years. This is not saying much. He looked absolutely horrible his first two years and he was even worse on the offensive end jacking up bad shots.

He is not as bad as he was his first two years. There has been improvement but obviously he is extremely flawed. I concede that Howland keeps him in just for the chance he goes off every now and then (like the ASU game first half and the spurts in second last night). However, he is an enigma. Guess the positive is he is generating lot of interesting discussion here on BN. lol

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 4:50 PM PST up reply actions

ND and MR

have both developed into something more than just spot-up shooters offensively, which is good to see.

by britishbruin on Jan 7, 2010 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

I am not going to go that far

MR may be, ND … uh no. I can’t go there with you. No way dude.

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

they both mix in some inside game

and given ND can actually hit a high percentage of free throws, he’s a decent secondary post option… don’t worry, you’ll get there…

by britishbruin on Jan 7, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

Nah

He is going to choke on Sat.

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 5:52 PM PST up reply actions

the only player who can stop ND is ND

unlimited range with his outside shot, some nice post moves, clutch free throw shooting – truly our strongest triple threat player

;-)

by britishbruin on Jan 8, 2010 11:19 AM PST up reply actions

… and ND has been to the free throw line more already this season than the whole of last season…

by britishbruin on Jan 7, 2010 5:30 PM PST up reply actions

yup

he said that his mishandling of that pass was how he knew he would get another chance to win the game. Or something.

I guess you also saw the line about Dragovich, Roll and Lee telling each other at the half to “keep shooting”? That’s the senior leadership we’ve been looking for!

by britishbruin on Jan 7, 2010 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

My thoughts

We won because as Coach Montgomery, a class coach, said, UCLA played harder than Cal.

Good question about our last possession. We had run out of timeouts so who knows if Anderson was tapped by Coach to run the play at the end. It is possible that the pass was not originally intended to go to Reeves. Watch the last few seconds just before Anderson makes his “move,” Dragovich was held badly by two Cal defenders as he was trying to break for the basket. It could be Dragovich to the basket was option No. 1 and when he couldn’t move as the play developed and a foul was not called, Anderson put that wicked english on the ball in a clumsy effort to get it to Roll.

by peggysue69 on Jan 7, 2010 3:37 PM PST up reply actions

Drago to the basket

Dont know if that was option 1 but I believe that is critical to the success of the team.

Whether Nestor or the rest of us like it or not, ND is going to get lots of playing time from CBH. If he is going to be in there, we need him to mix it up in the paint on offense. He has shown the capability a few times this season. If he gets in there and we get him the ball, it will likely be points because he can at least shot free throws.

You're the man Tele

Can’t get enough of that clip. I think I’ll put it up on YouTube with the background track “I’m Walking” by Fats Domino.

Phew, Tele

For a moment there, I thought the title was for the Cal Fullerton highlights. I was at that game, and want to put any memories and highlights of that game out of my mind.

Thanks for the Cal-Berkeley highlights.

Same Here

I thought I was the only one wondering why CSF. But likewise, thanks Tele, I can’t help but jump outta my chair every time I see MR’s last shot. I saw the game start to finish and was taping it but because the previous NBA game ran about 5 minutes late, my DVR cut off the last few minutes of the UCLA game. I was so engrossed in the game I failed to notice the record light go out and didn’t press the record button again. So I have the whole thing sans the conclusion. But I think there will be alot more highlights this year.

thanks for the highlights

I was bummed to miss the game so thanks for the great highlights. I’m glad you put the bonehead plays in too so I got the full Bruin experience!

Looked like Roll and Drago took it to the rack once or twice each…unbelievable. I also liked Lane finishing and 1 off that pass from Lee.

I understand the Anderson criticism but it’s hard for me to be as down as you guys on a Bruin…from the shots he made—a couple 3’s, a couple drives to the rack—it at least looks like he’s improving just a bit.

The game winner from Roll, he had to just catch and shoot…nothing but net was amazing.

Always love beating Cal…
