Around SBN: Jeremy Lin's Game-Winner Was Incredible, Worth Remembering

End Of Football Season: Special BCS Championship Thread

Here is one factor going in favor of Texas Longhorns on BN

Well the 2009-10 NCAA football season officially comes to an end tonight with the BCS championship game taking place right in our home stadium. Looks like there is a lot of interest in watching this game in BN and our community is fairly split down the middle in terms of our rooting interests between #2 Texas Longhorns (13-0) vs #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm PST.

I am still not sure who I am going to be rooting for. I guess I will always be grateful to Texas for the image above. However, at the same I have fond memories of interacting with class Alabama Crimson Tide fans during our epic Tuscaloosa road trip from 2001.

Star-divide

If you want to get up to speed on both of these teams you can always check out Roll Bama Roll and Burnt Orange Nation, two of the classic college blogs of our SBN network. I am sure those places will be rocking tonight. You can keep up with the box score via WWL.

As always, it's always fun to watch these games with other Bruin fans who are taking in all the action through similar blue and gold colored classes. Here is to a great game and a rocking open thread to close out the football season in style.

GO BRUINS.

Guys

I actually think there is something here. The cheater might be looking for a gig at the end of next season and NFL team will not be interested in some washed up, proven loser (especially in the NFL) who needs to (allegedly) cheat to compete. So he could be angling for a career ala Lavin.

Please ... help

I just had to listen to Herbsteit say that now that the second string QB is in, the Texas receivers have to understand that they have to catch the ball.

Think about that for a second.

I’ll wait.

Herbstreit is getting paid for this.

When McCoy was in, the Texas receivers were basically indifferent about catching the ball. Some of the times the would say, “Hey, it’s important that I catch the ball.” Other times, “well, no, I don’t think so.” But now that the second string QB is in, it’s important that they understand that they have to catch the ball.

Will someone please just kill me. Please.

With McCoy out of the game, their offense hasn’t done crap, which just means their D has been on the field all game and gets tired.

Granted their D hasn’t done much, but when you take out a teams entire offense, everything goes to hell.

Yeah, not fair to criticize GIlbert for his performance

Unfortunately, Texas has no running game to speak of, so he’s going to be asked to make plays – and you can’t expect a backup in any situation to just roll in to a situation and perform.

Unless he’s Drew Bledsoe, circa 2001. But I digress.

Oh no - took the head set off and heard Herbie

Herbie said, and I think I can quote it, “After that interception to end the first half, now that Texas gets the ball to open the second half, you kind of have to expect that they need to drive down the field and put some points on the scoreboard.”

He is worse than Tim McCarver. He is worse than Bill and Ted.

Does Obama have the authority to have him taken out and shot? Somebody should have that authority. Can’t he at least be sent to the shed?

I want to get a transcript of this. I want to publish every word he says and ask the geniuses at ABC headquarters whether they endorse every word he says.

by Fox 71 on Jan 7, 2010 7:30 PM PST reply actions

Don't you understand how harmful this sort of commentary is to the fabric of civilization as we know it?

He gets paid for saying that it would be a good idea if the team that was behind put some points on the scoreboard. That implies that there might be a way for the Texas defense to take some of ’Bama’s point off the scoreboard, but they’re just not doing it.

And he’s no different from any of them. It’s all one insipid inanity after another. To me, it’s like someone playing rap music in the middle of an opera (or vice versa to a rap fan.) Why can’t Herbie, to use the vernacular, just STFU?

Key for team B: keep them off the offensive glass

Did Herbie say that there were six guys lining up to rush the QB and only five linemen to block them, and that means that unless one lineman can block two guys, someone will have a free shot at the QB. And did he say that the unblocked guy is the guy who deflected the pass?

Or was he still stuck on how Texas needs to put some points on the scoreboard?

(Mrs. Fox 71 just asked if there has ever been a time that I’ve just talked without saying anything. I confess that there is truth to that. But I only inflict that pain on her, not on the entire world.)

A safety from Michigan

He was a 3 star safety/LB. One of those hybrid types. Not sure if it’s a big loss because we have lot of guys in our backyard as well.

He has the size to be that physical presence at SS that we’ve lacked to protect the middle but you never know with these recruits. Also, we are loaded with bodies in the secondary and is one of the strengths of our team.

Texas will always have talent

to beat them, we will need talent, too.

And, have to play well.

And, that’s how it should be.

Still have fond memories of the Rout 66 game

I think so because I expect big things from us next year

not 66 points but more O.

I’m planning on going to the game.

I have a hard time getting into the pro game. I have had that feeling ever since Jeff Garcia became the Niners QB.

I can root for my Jags just fine

but when I watch any other NFL game, I never pick a side or am overly excited. I feel like whenever I watch college, I can always find a reason to root for one team over the other and get excited.

All I can hear is the crowd in the announcing booth

The passion and enthusiasm I seem to be able to ignore, but I’m constitutionally unable to ignore the words. And Herbie has yet to offer any reason why his execution should not take place forthwith.

I am just surprised

that they haven’t found a way to weave in that Sandra Bullock flick reference.

by Nestor on Jan 7, 2010 8:56 PM PST up reply actions

Don't know that's it's necessairly a 'feel-good' story

but I think the honesty in which both Ingram and his father carry themselves in their relationship is something to admire. I guess it’s just an overall metaphor for life being difficult, but you’ll always have family.

by CAJason80 on Jan 7, 2010 8:57 PM PST up reply actions

Nothing that any TV station does surprises me anymore

I had watched a lot of football this season (with the sound off) including a lot of ‘Bama games, and I did not know the current penal circumstance of Ingram’s daddy. What does it have to do with the game, ABC? Are we supposed to feel sorry for Ingram? Are we supposed to rise up in support of a “Free Ingram’s Daddy” movement.

Sheesh. (Sound back off – Mrs. Fox 71 has given up.)

by Fox 71 on Jan 7, 2010 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

mark it down

If a bama player wins the heisman, bama wins the NC 100% of the time.

Just curious

Has either announcer mentioned Boise State’s undefeated season even once tonight?

but no more BCS, that’s for sure. The Rose Bowl (ABC) will be the only BCS game on network TV. ESPN will have the rest, including the title game.

Well, Bruins, I hope this was instructive

I hope that none of you who were in contact with the verbal diarrhea coming over the airwaves suffered any long-term damage.

I know it’s hard to shed a habit that has been a part of your life since childhood, but all it would take to get rid of the insipid announcers would be a movement, wait, wrong word – not a movement but a groundswell of opposition to stupid statements in the booth. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but for the sake of our children we must get rid of the Herbies of the airwaves.
