End Of Football Season: Special BCS Championship Thread
Well the 2009-10 NCAA football season officially comes to an end tonight with the BCS championship game taking place right in our home stadium. Looks like there is a lot of interest in watching this game in BN and our community is fairly split down the middle in terms of our rooting interests between #2 Texas Longhorns (13-0) vs #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (13-0). Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm PST.
I am still not sure who I am going to be rooting for. I guess I will always be grateful to Texas for the image above. However, at the same I have fond memories of interacting with class Alabama Crimson Tide fans during our epic Tuscaloosa road trip from 2001.
If you want to get up to speed on both of these teams you can always check out Roll Bama Roll and Burnt Orange Nation, two of the classic college blogs of our SBN network. I am sure those places will be rocking tonight. You can keep up with the box score via WWL.
As always, it's always fun to watch these games with other Bruin fans who are taking in all the action through similar blue and gold colored classes. Here is to a great game and a rocking open thread to close out the football season in style.
GO BRUINS.

ESPN just showed the images of the decade in college football
And UCLA was just about left out. Why do I have the feeling that in 2020, when they look back at this decade, that won’t be the case?

glad that VY was the last image

OK, please tell me if anyone is listening to Game Day

Guys
I actually think there is something here. The cheater might be looking for a gig at the end of next season and NFL team will not be interested in some washed up, proven loser (especially in the NFL) who needs to (allegedly) cheat to compete. So he could be angling for a career ala Lavin.
Man, the things Petey will do to get his face anywhere near a Janaury Bowl.
He probably just showed up thinking he didn’t need a ticket, and Herbie felt sorry for him.
"In this program your passion bucket must be full to play SC." -- CRN, to Dan Patrick, 1/2008
We should root for Texas,
if they win the NC, most of there good juniors will prob. leave to the NFL, makes next year much better.

My boss was telling me that the 1992 championship was really sweet
Bama was a big underdog that year, and Miami thought they could win by just showing up. Bama kicked their ass pretty good.
The BCS is still stupid
and apparently they have a new shrill to cheer it on. That being said, I hope it’s a good game tonight.

I just had to listen to Herbsteit say that now that the second string QB is in, the Texas receivers have to understand that they have to catch the ball.
Think about that for a second.
I’ll wait.
Herbstreit is getting paid for this.
When McCoy was in, the Texas receivers were basically indifferent about catching the ball. Some of the times the would say, “Hey, it’s important that I catch the ball.” Other times, “well, no, I don’t think so.” But now that the second string QB is in, it’s important that they understand that they have to catch the ball.

And our receivers had a hard time getting separation this season. Rosario, Embree, Marvray, Carroll, Smith, Fauria, Pressley … can we handle them?
There's a reason they are here
we are still aspiring to get there, so it will be a good benchmark.

Texas is looking very average with Garrett Gilbert. What I am even more stunned at his how their receivers haven’t done much to help the young QB out.
I feel so bad
for the Texas QB. So I know I am being a bit emotional about it but this is about to be the worst day of his life. I guess dealing with our QB injuries the last few seasons I can’t help but empathize with Texas!
You've got to think
This kind of stuff might have a psychological impact on rest of his career. Yikes. Terrible call by Brown and his staff.
yeah
but DURING a national championship game? ouch.

Has Herbie said that
it’s important that the quarterback not throw interceptions that are returned for touchdowns, and that he has to actually understand that?
Wow.

With genius calls like that shovel pass when the smart play is to run the clock out.
Formerly ryebreadraz
it was an exciting gutsy call
after Saban’s cowardly decision to take an easy 3 points on 4th and short. Saban is Dorrellian. Mack Brown is exciting! Think about how opening up the end-of-half playbook like that will help with recruiting!
That has got to be the dumbest play call I've seen all year
Seriously, every idiot takes a knee and tries to get their QBs head screwed on straight in the second half. At least get the OC down from the booth and have him talk to Gilbert. Now you’ve completely rattled him.
The biggest series of this game (or at least one of them)
Alabama’s defensive stand at the goal line.
Punting to win
In this case. But hey ….I thought championships are only won by exciting playcalls!!!
How will Alabama fans remember this game (if they just cruise to a boring win)?

Their D hasn't had a chance to rest
With McCoy out of the game, their offense hasn’t done crap, which just means their D has been on the field all game and gets tired.
Granted their D hasn’t done much, but when you take out a teams entire offense, everything goes to hell.
The D can get itself off the field in 3 plays
it’s called a 3 and out.
They have to blame themselves, not the O.
sjh
Well ...
Then again Bullough will probably just play base D and have our CBs give their WRs 7-8 cushion to get them going in first half.
how can you ever get praised for visibly making adjustments
if you don’t come out with a flawed defensive gameplan for the first half?
Still up that tree?
I don’t think that it will matter much. He looks a lot like J-Cromp back there
Formerly ucla13_usc9
Well
The real question is would you rather lose the game in the first half , or give the opportunity to catch up in the second half?
Of course the other option is shutting the offense down then getting torched in the second half…
Its the tale of UCLA
Formerly ucla13_usc9
That's the not the question
I want my team’s defense to come out and annihiliate the other team like Rocky Long’s D did back in 97-98.
As I said
I am not the “Bullough sucks” wagon. I am very conflicted and I am really hoping he takes a step forward next season.
He would not be at UT were he not talented
They have a lot of great in state kids to recruit and have not had a bad QB in recent history
Just not ready for this game.
Would be a mistake to underestimate where he will be next year

Yeah, not fair to criticize GIlbert for his performance
Unfortunately, Texas has no running game to speak of, so he’s going to be asked to make plays – and you can’t expect a backup in any situation to just roll in to a situation and perform.
Unless he’s Drew Bledsoe, circa 2001. But I digress.

Looks like I might be able to go to bed by 11:30 or ealier tonight
I was sloooooooooooooooow all morning today and groggy.
Oh no - took the head set off and heard Herbie
Herbie said, and I think I can quote it, “After that interception to end the first half, now that Texas gets the ball to open the second half, you kind of have to expect that they need to drive down the field and put some points on the scoreboard.”
He is worse than Tim McCarver. He is worse than Bill and Ted.
Does Obama have the authority to have him taken out and shot? Somebody should have that authority. Can’t he at least be sent to the shed?
I want to get a transcript of this. I want to publish every word he says and ask the geniuses at ABC headquarters whether they endorse every word he says.
Don't you understand how harmful this sort of commentary is to the fabric of civilization as we know it?
He gets paid for saying that it would be a good idea if the team that was behind put some points on the scoreboard. That implies that there might be a way for the Texas defense to take some of ’Bama’s point off the scoreboard, but they’re just not doing it.
And he’s no different from any of them. It’s all one insipid inanity after another. To me, it’s like someone playing rap music in the middle of an opera (or vice versa to a rap fan.) Why can’t Herbie, to use the vernacular, just STFU?
there's a lot of lazy journalism
Lots of formulaic segments. My particular bugbear is “Keys to the Game”. It often includes insights like “Do what you do” and “Spring the upset”, because every game needs to have “keys” and they don’t have many.
Oh, also things like
Key for team A: get a lot of offensive boards
Key for team B: keep them off the offensive glass
I hate it.
And to whoever called for swing passes/runs, looks like
that’s the gameplan for the second half. Good call.
Sound was off
Did Herbie say that there were six guys lining up to rush the QB and only five linemen to block them, and that means that unless one lineman can block two guys, someone will have a free shot at the QB. And did he say that the unblocked guy is the guy who deflected the pass?
Or was he still stuck on how Texas needs to put some points on the scoreboard?
(Mrs. Fox 71 just asked if there has ever been a time that I’ve just talked without saying anything. I confess that there is truth to that. But I only inflict that pain on her, not on the entire world.)
The kid's getting some confidence
time to nail him
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I was about to say
What’s the money on it being Pete Caroll running on to the field screaming “Always compete, Texas! Always compete!”
Did anyone else notice?
It’s Chuck White announcing the game, The Voice of the Bruins!

Speaking of running backs
Posted in the Aaron Corp fanshot … chatter coming out about Aundre Dean being moved to safety over at TCU.
Aundre Dean is one of my favorite kids
Interesting move if true because he is a hard hitting rb.
Will be a big safety on a very strong D.
sjh
I still believe they were forced to value blocking over running
and he simply didn’t block as well as needed.
He is a great rb with size and speed.
He ended up at a school that will play BCS games for the next year or two.
sjh
Well blocking was def. a factor as well
Dean by all accounts sounds like a great kid. I was referring to some of the complaints we were reading about Dean being not give a shot.
To his credit, Dean and his family never complained
gracious to the end.
A really great Texas kid.
sjh
And your Alabama gameplan for the rest of the game
Mark Ingram. Mark Ingram. Trent Richardson. Mark Ingram.
i would like to see ingram punt :)
Go Bruins!
Shipley dropped another pass
Difficult catch…but he needs to make that.
There is a certain amount of luck to get this far
injuries and bounces make a huge difference.
Tx one second away from not being here — and that was not planned or brilliant.
sjh
I wish
I know we could be set up well in 2 years IF the current Sophs come back, get some high caliber DT’s and…….a new DC? :D
right through his hands -- this it not all on a young qb
the entire O is not helping him out.
They are not listening to herbie
sjh
At least the TX defense
isn’t giving up. Would really like to see them make a game out of this….
This is exactly what teams did to us when they were ahead
The Tx D is not that much better. They are not being pushed. So their stat’s will look good in this half as ours did in the second half of similar games.
sjh
I'll be honest...I'm getting a bit nervous
I can see this UT offense putting a string together. One score and they’ll get confident. But they need to do it in the 3rd, or else it’s too late.
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing $C.
I want Bama to get it all locked up
I want Texas to be doubting themselves just a bit heading into this off-season.
Whoa
Kobe is not a saint but I’m diehard Purple & Gold. Then again, if the 1 & Done Rule was in effect, I’d probably hated Kobe for a while since he said that he wouldn’ve gone to Duke.
A safety from Michigan
He was a 3 star safety/LB. One of those hybrid types. Not sure if it’s a big loss because we have lot of guys in our backyard as well.
Then again Ingram was just a 3 star recruit for Bama. Recruiting is really a crapshoot.

As I mentioned to N
I hadn’t been counting Maka for a while, but I’m hearing very positive things on him right now so I’ve started counting him.

Don't think so
I was about to say the same thing…you think their ST could do them a favor and down something inside the five.
Yep, apparently
still need another TD anyhow, I suppose.
I'm not sure that's intentional
It might have just happened to hit the Bama player.
Formerly ryebreadraz
agree -- hard to aim a line drive like that and make it work
Unless you see JA’s rebound pass to MR last night as intentional
Buy both or buy neither

I don't know if it was an onsides kick
If it was, he missed it, but it was a bad miss. (Sort of like any of my successful approach shots.)
No, that was designed
I’m sure the play-call was to kick it off one of the up-backs as hard as possible, and that’s what he did.
He went off injured
but never updated us on his status.

That, or SC had them on retainer at the start of the year, and did not want to let them go to waste.

So is this Texas backup QB any good?
Better than the Law Firm at least I bet

Too much to ask from him
To be thrown into wolves. Plus there was “that call” right before half time.
How come all of a sudden
the Texas receivers’ hands are made out of crazy glue?
"Oh, you mean we needed to catch the balls?"
Thanks, Kirk.
Gilbert is really calming down
You have to be really proud of him.
Power went out here in Geezerville for a while
Loss of audio was not a problem, but the loss of video was, in its way, a drawback.
Watch the replay and the way he moves his arm
It’s Barnes to JJ
I want to see him without Shipley

It's all about Musberger telling the recievers they need to catch the ball
Don’t you know that, Ryan?! If UCLA/UT gets shunted to a regional broadcast, we will be fine.

Did I mention that the guys at Texas Tech's Blog
were hoping that at the end of the game, Shipley runs from the endzone and proposes to McCoy. (Some deep rivalry there.)
wow
if texas wins this, that doesn’t make bama look good at all.

Locker got a 15 yd penalty last yr against BYU for throwing the ball up after a TD like Shipley just did
SPTRs
Yes, well...
AJ Green got a penalty this year for…jumping. Seriously.
Well, there it is
If he’s jumping for joy, then it’s spontaneous. But if he’s jumping, seriously, well that’a an entirely different deal.
Texas will always have talent
to beat them, we will need talent, too.
And, have to play well.
And, that’s how it should be.

Will we have any chance against them next yr?
Still have fond memories of the Rout 66 game

I can root for my Jags just fine
but when I watch any other NFL game, I never pick a side or am overly excited. I feel like whenever I watch college, I can always find a reason to root for one team over the other and get excited.

The passion and enthusiasm I seem to be able to ignore, but I’m constitutionally unable to ignore the words. And Herbie has yet to offer any reason why his execution should not take place forthwith.
Ouch...bad time to have to use a timeout

Not blitzing is a safe call for which the DC would ordinarily not be criticized
Just like punting on 4th and 3 at the opposition 35.
They were puzzled that we criticized them for stuff that doesn’t get criticized when it happens in the NFL.
Guess Texas is only interested in calling timeouts when the clock is already stopped

It's weird that ABC has decided to sell the incarceration of Mark Ingram's father as a 'feel-good' story

Don't know that's it's necessairly a 'feel-good' story
but I think the honesty in which both Ingram and his father carry themselves in their relationship is something to admire. I guess it’s just an overall metaphor for life being difficult, but you’ll always have family.
Nothing that any TV station does surprises me anymore
I had watched a lot of football this season (with the sound off) including a lot of ‘Bama games, and I did not know the current penal circumstance of Ingram’s daddy. What does it have to do with the game, ABC? Are we supposed to feel sorry for Ingram? Are we supposed to rise up in support of a “Free Ingram’s Daddy” movement.
Sheesh. (Sound back off – Mrs. Fox 71 has given up.)

Well, Bruins, I hope this was instructive
I hope that none of you who were in contact with the verbal diarrhea coming over the airwaves suffered any long-term damage.
I know it’s hard to shed a habit that has been a part of your life since childhood, but all it would take to get rid of the insipid announcers would be a movement, wait, wrong word – not a movement but a groundswell of opposition to stupid statements in the booth. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but for the sake of our children we must get rid of the Herbies of the airwaves.
