[Update x 2] UCLA Suspends"Multiple" Starters For Oregon Game
From the OC Register:
UPDATE: UCLA has suspended as many as six players, multiple starters, for the Bruins nationally televised game at No. 2 Oregon Oct. 21, the Register has confirmed.
UCLA has suspended six starters for the Bruins nationally televised game at No. 2 Oregon Oct. 21, the Register has confirmed.
UCLA sports information director Marc Dellins said Tuesday morning the university had "no comment at this time."
Guess, we might as well forfeit the Oregon game. Why bother showing up?
When details become available we will update this post (find them after the jump). Guess in the meanwhile you can consider this as the real dread. lol Yes, I am really LOL.
GO BRUINS.
UPDATE (N): Just got an email saying the OC Register report was "not correct." There is a lot of confusion out there right now and it would be helpful if the correct information is released as fast as practicable. Because it is clear that UCLA haters a**holes vultures in the LA traditional media are circling. GO BRUINS.
UPDATE II (N): Coach Rick Neuheisel called the OC Register report of suspending 6 starters "fabricated." The OCR hacks are now backtracking on their initial reports and using the phrase "multiple starters" and "as many as six players." So clearly the OCR was jumping the gun to get out a story and launch another hit on UCLA.

Do you like this story?
Comments
I commented in Spaulding Roundup about this.
I know that since it’s the OC Register, many of you will just shake it off based on their bad history covering us, but added to Foster’s report, this is not good.
On Foster, I know he isn’t liked, but he attributes it to an unnamed source in the program. You can laugh it off, but I honestly don’t think that Foster is sitting down at his computer trying to make up stuff to embarrass CRN or the program.
If the suspensions have in fact taken place, then that indicates that CRN has taken care of the matter. But I have to say, this isn’t looking like it’s going to be a good story. After a terrible game, this is just more bad news for the program. It’s a distraction for the players and the staff when the heat has been turned up. It’s obvious that there are people that are looking for CRN and the program to fail—this is just more ammunition for them.

This is sad
but maybe its a blessing in disguise.
hopefully its Prince, Hester, Westgate, Price, and Embree
but on a serious note, this is really sad. :(
He may be working hard, but he can’t stop the run or cover if his life depended on it. He’s just not a pac-10 caliber OLB

I didn't appreciate the hopefully part of the post.
The others have been undisciplined on the field (or sideline). He has not. I found the post a bit nasty.
Go Bruins!
I agree. No need to wish any wrongs on anyone, period.

We don't need suspensions ever...
but the Oregon game’s as close to a guaranteed loss as any game on our schedule, so if we had to take a hit, this might be the best time for it.
On a bigger scale, this may be a turning point for CRN and the program. It could start a death spiral…or it could be the kick in the rear some of us think he needs to start making some systematic (ie, coaching) changes.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
Let's just hope that it is something much less significant and got blown
out of proportion.
If it is true, it will give some kids a chance to show what they can do. Will just have to make the best of a bad situation.
"Let's just forfeit the game"
i know we dont stand a chance but cowardice like that is sickening.

If it's deserved, then good for CRN
Speculating here, because none of us know details. But in assuming these players deserved suspension, then, at least, good for CRN for taking action.
Look, our football team does NOT need any more adversity right now. Losing 3 to 6 starters can hardly help our chances on the field. But I credit CRN for making the difficult choice and doing the right thing, even though it will adversely affect the team on the field.

"even though it will adversely affect the team on the field."
Depending on who it is, it may not have any effect. :-)

And the problem is?
What have the “starters” done that makes them so necessary? This might give a chance to some unknown kid to make plays. Stars are born like this. If I remember correctly, RN fell into place because someone went down. No one has shown they are that valuable, except maybe Ayers. Blessing in disguise as I see it.
Not attacking anyone in particular.
All I am saying is some the starters came out without much passion to win in the first quarter at Cal. Not fast off the line on either side of the ball. Letting the ball get stripped by poor tech. Winning is an internal thing and an external one. Both need to be balanced to succeed. Great teams have that. My partner is a former world champ boxer, and he said the same for fighters. Ali had that in buckets. So did Geo Foreman. As do teams that consistently win. This late development shows more of an internal problem going on. It is a head thing, not a talent one.
I think it means it won't be 6 people
and it may not be full suspensions.
And, it sounds like he’s still dealing with it.
Therefore, there is still no “there” there.

There is no more context
He basically said that and they changed topics.
The rest of the interview is OK.
Clearly, CRN is stressed and tired.

Yes.
Almost a direct quote, as best I could type it down.
He was referring to OC Register AND report of 6 starters.

As you've noted multiple times
the Slimes and OC Register need to have their press credentials revoked. There is enough media outlets out there and for Bruin news, people come to BN, BG, BZ, BRO, etc anyways. That is if it ends up being another hack job by the Tradmed who continue their agenda of bashing UCLA. F*****s!
What pisses me off even more ..
… is when some so called UCLA fans instantly jump on these jerks’ stories to turn around and attack our schools and coaches.
right
just don’t know what he can be saying is “awfully fabricated”
by britishbruin on Oct 12, 2010 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions
That gives him a lot of wiggle room while he figures this out
I figure it can be:
the number of players;
the sanction to be invoked’
or, that there will be no discipline of any kind.
I, for one, think it an appropriate response.
CRN’s duty is to the school and his players. He has no obligation to make a statement to anyone UNTIL he has a handle on the situation, assuming there is one, and is ready to deal with it publicly.
The one thing we know about CRN is that he does not shy away from taking strong disciplinary stands, even to the detriment of the team, when appropriate.
He deserves the time to do this right.

The rest of the interview is very good.
There was a good section on our young talent and how they are growing.
I wonder if he will make a decision to play them more.
I hope they are ready, soon.

LA Times posted and then took down the link.......
The six that were listed are Sheldon Price, Aaron Hester, Morrell Presley, Nate Chandler, Rahim Moore and Akeem Ayers
A commenter on Gold's blog
gave the names and a fishwrap link, but if it ever worked, it was taken down pretty quickly – it was posted on Gold’s page at 12:09 PDT, and by 12:15 PDT the link was dead. stuntexp, did you see it yourself?
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
That would be surprising since the OC Register is backtracking on the 6 starters bit
All 6 of those guys are starters.
As a comment on Gold's blog pointed out
the broken link that someone provided there which claimed to list those players, is a carbon copy of the URL to that page on the insidesocal.com/ucla blog. The troller just copy & pasted the URL to Jon Gold’s post and replaced “insidesocal.com” with “latimes.com”. Completely bogus.
I would be SHOCKED
If Rahim ever did something to get suspended.
Last weekend
I went to the game last weekend, and stayed at the same Hotel as the team. It was in downtown SF, and the city was hopping. There was alot going on in town with our game, Stanford vs u$c, the Giants, 49ers, and Raiders all home. When I was going up to my room Friday evening I saw some players running off the elevator, and I remember thinking, I hope nobody gets in trouble. There was alot of temptation there, that might have tempted me when I was their age. Anyways I don’t know why they put the team downtown on a weekend like that. There had to be Hotels closer to Berekley they could have stayed at. I am just speculating there might have been a curfew issue. Does anyone know what time their curfew is the night before a game.
What are the odds that 6 players get suspended and they all happen to be starters.
Isn’t it more likely to be a combination of non-starters and starters who get into trouble together, or do all the non-starters not hang out with the starters? Who knows. Guess we will have to wait for CRN to make a statement. Any other reports are just rumors until proven otherwise.
What does it take to really revoke the press credentials of these guys?
Maybe someone should look into it.
PRICE
Sad if this story is true. I think Price needs to be disciplined/suspended for all the trash-talking he does on the field, especially when his team is getting their ass handed to them. I nearly vomited during the Stanford game when he got up talking smack to furd receiver when the score was something like 28-0. I cant believe the issue wasn’t addressed after the furd debacle and there he was doing it again in the Cal game. One of the things I have been most proud of being a Bruin fan over the years, is the absence of that type of behavior.
WOW!
I hope its for a violation of team rules and not something serious involving the law. I know CRN will handle it swiftly as hes done in the past and i hope the media gives him credit for it.
"Success is never final, Failure is never fatal. It's Courage that count's" - John Wooden.
Morgan center needs to get ahead of the story with a real press release.
Don’t have to mention names, but the media circus by staying completely silent is not helping our program.
If there's no decision on who, what, or why
Then there is no story yet. What’s not helping the program right now is the SUC Times and the SUC Register engaging in a good old fashioned circle jerk. When a decision is made, and everything is final, that is the appropriate time for articles and comments.
Funny how these asshats are so eager to find out what’s happening in this case, and yet none of them were able to catch even a whiff of wrongdoing at South Central all those years, which the NCAA found to be blatant and egregious misconduct.
Misses the point
These people are irresponsible. You’re under the assumption that there is a decision made. What information are you privy to that makes you think this is the case? Unless you have any, then you’re just feeding the rumor mongering.
Once again, if there is no decision made, and I have no reason to believe there is one, then there is no story, and therefore nothing to clean up. What do you want? The SID to make something up for your benefit?
Don't agree.
I’m not saying a decision is made. All they have to say is “We have an open investigation involving x number of players. Nothing is final atm, blah blah blah…” I’m not a pr person, but shutting up like clam isn’t cutting it once information has been leaked.
Are you serious?
Have you ever heard of an announcement like that that wasn’t about an NCAA investigation? Next thing you know, you’ll be demanding that they tweet what DG has for lunch and how much it cost.
but seriously
I want to know what DG has for lunch, and how much it costs, as otherwise I won’t know whether to call on him to take radical steps like skipping buying breakfast (which he is quite capable of making himself at home) and putting the money towards the sort of lunch he needs here at UCLA…

Gold update!!
Thats what exactly should have been released earlier, not sure why it take so long for that info to come out.
Except nothing was released
It’s odd that you’d cite that when the whole point with the “fluid situation” and “not cut and dry” comments is to tamp down speculation. What exactly has “come out”? Nothing. That’s the point. At this moment, there is nothing to know.
Would you rather they announced something before making a decision?
Or rush to judgement just to please the media and the fans. I want them to make decisions they have thought through and to not regret their decisions later (especially if they are rushing for the benefit of others).
Go Bruins!
The difference is that CRN takes action,
Cheatey rarely if ever did.
I’m not saying that these bozos at the times and register aren’t exactly what you say there are either.
What are you talking about?
What do you call all those extra laps around the field after practice? That’s action folks. The Humanitarian ran a tight ship. If they caught you roiding, raping, assaulting, etc. you better get your running shoes, cause Pete would never stand for that.
Let's wait for the facts to develop
There ought not be a rush for discovery of the truth.
Yes, I really appreciated Gold for this:
There have been several message board “rumors” and “I’ve-been-hearings” from comments in this blog, and such posts will no longer be tolerated. In the future, any sort of similar post will be immediately deleted, and the poster will be banned. It’s not cool, and it’s not funny, guys. Please cut it out.
Go Bruins!
+1
Kudos to Gold for seemingly being the only person in the LA tradmed who understands responsibility.
When something is decided, we will know about it. Maybe it’s just the internet age, but it’s ridiculous that there’s now an expectation of information before things actually happen.
Imagine if the times and register spent this much time
exploring the steriod abuse, criminal activity, ecstacy dealing, rape, and other actions going on at SC under Pete Carroll instead of turning a blind eye.

Something went wrong with UCLA Football..............
I’ll wait and see the who’s, what’s and why’s and how CRN responds to whatever developes. I’d like to take the time to vent about what I see wrong with the UCLA Football program.
The problem predates CRN. I don’t remember and player suspensions during the Donahue era. I do recall a player who was on the UCLA football team who was accused of murder and subsequent information came out that he was illiterate and how did he gain admission to our fine school.
Things seemed to get out of hand during Toledo’s regime. We had the handicap parking scandal, a QB with a string of DUI’s and a running back with a new car he didn’t pay for. Toledo was mainly let go because we thought the program was getting out of hand even though Toledo racked up a significant amount of wins.
We got a new AD and like the new sheriff in town he wanted to clean up Dodge. A new football coach was brought in and the program was cleaned up. Unfortunately, we didn’t win football games and out went the coach.
I’ve had an on going discussion about UCLA football with my son who is a sports write for MaxPrepSports.com and was the prep sports editor for the Oakland Tribune. He keeps telling me that high school athletes have changed over the last ten years.
Previously, an athlete would parlay his talents for a college education. If he was drafted by the Pros then that was an extra. Today kids come to college majoring in Pro football and basketball.
They arrive on campus with a secret plan to turn pro and all they want to do is show case their talents to the scouts in the stands. If they play on a winning team the more pub they receive and the higher their draft status. These kids aren’t looking to get a college education that will be useful in later life or when they blowout their knee.
Last year for example ,we lost a running back because he wasn’t getting PT and he went elsewhere to showcase his talent.
When you have a group of Prima Donnas with individual agendas, it’s hard to build a winning atmosphere.
UCLA needs to get back to the values, attitudes and mindset that made us the greatest college athletic program in the country. It’s not about how many 5 star, 4 star players we can recruit. It’s about character and hard work. Rick knows this. He was a walk on and busted his ass to make it to the starting line up and win a Rose Bowl. I applaud him for disciplining players when they have broken the rules. CRN gets UCLA Football. CRN sells UCLA football.
I am proud as hell to say I am a lifetime Alumni of one of the greatest universities in the world. I wear those four letters with pride. I’ve seen the dark side. I was a member of their faculty. I heard their President tell the faculty how their school was funded and how important football wins and NC’s were to maintaining their financial structure. That’s why I proudly donate to the UCLA Fund.
I would just like us to win a decent amount of football games each season, go to a bowl game and maybe compete for a NC. But I want to do it with a clean program and with athletes that represent those four letters with pride, like I do!

Beautifully written.
I really appreciate the perspective on what matters. I like to win a lot. But it is more important to me to be from “one of the best universities in the world”. Thank you for writing this.
Go Bruins!
difficult to know what to make of current situation
are a number of short suspensions over the last couple of years the sign of CRN running a tight ship, or a sign he is struggling to keep control?
Put another way – would a season without any suspensions indicate a clean program or a program that was not actively policing itself?
On a separate and fairly unrelated note, while no-one here is likely to defend CTS as a coach, most agree he was an honest guy who loved UCLA; which certainly made it harder for him against Cheatey than it would have been for someone less honest.

Agree with Twothphry and uclaluv
UCLA is the one of the BEST universities in the world, I think it is the BEST! Wear those four letters with PRIDE like I do. As a teacher, I have sent many great students to UCLA because I have told them about the school and have taken them on field trips to the school. I have shared my LOVE for the school with them. I LOVE MY ALMA MATER and I am so proud to have graduated from there. GO BRUINS!

Getting real about football players
Is it realistic to expect our football to team to compete at the highest levels of D1 and not have behavior problems? Simply put “it goes with the territory” and I can’t think of (m)any examples of strong programs that don’t have a fair amount of bad actors. I say this without making any assumptions aboutthe veracity of these reports.
