UCLA Suspends Two Players - Smith & Presley - For Oregon Game
From UCLA (via email):
Two members of the Bruin football team have been suspended for one game for violation of team rules, UCLA head football Coach Rick Neuheisel announced today.
Wide receiver Josh Smith and F-back Morrell Presley will not play in the Oct. 21 contest against second-ranked Oregon in Eugene.
Due to federal and state student privacy laws, UCLA will have no further comment on the matter.
Well so much for the shameless and hackish hyperventilating on the part of the Trojan Times and the OC Register earlier today getting everyone into a frenzy. If those guys were run by individuals with any sense of professional decency they'd be ashamed of themselves but that is too much to expect from bunch of UCLA hating hacks. Clearly the garbage from Chris Foster and Scott Reid appears to be kind of fabricated and a pathetic, disgusting, preemptive hit job on UCLA to create a story.
Let's give credit where credit is due which is to Jon Gold, who did a wonderful job of not joining a feeding frenzy, showing commendable professional restraint throughout the day. As for the suspensions, more on them after the flip.
Both of these suspensions are both very disappointing news. First, wrt to Josh Smith this is not going to help him (or our program) as were hoping the coaches would trust him with more responsibilities. Second, wrt to Morrell Presley, this is now his third bout with suspension as member of UCLA football program. He was suspended for a game for undisclosed violation of team rules following the Tennessee game last season. He was also suspended for the EagleBank Bowl due to academic ineligibility issues. At this point the question becomes whether Presley should remain with the football program.
In terms of personnel, I am assuming Damien Thigpen will get a lot of looks at F-Back (along with Anthony Barr if he gets back from his calf strain injury). Josh Smith's injury will probably mean more reps for Jerry Johnson and Randall Carroll. Hope they will step up.
GO BRUINS.

Faith in CRN
Program discipline is an area where I have full faith in CRN. It’s a shame that these kids have gotten in trouble but I’m glad that CRN has the integrity to do what is right for UCLA, the football program, and ultimately for these kids. That’s a heck of a lot more than I can say for those other guys towards downtown.
Disappointing
especially re: Presley. what’s going on in this kid’s head?
Also, what a total cluster#@!% over at the treadmed… what shred of credibility they had is now gone. I also want to echo the props to Jon Gold, his blog continues to impress me and is really the best out there from the perspective of the “entrenched media” when it comes to both content and insight.
As I have mentioned before
I have been mad with Gold every now and then. However, what I really appreciate about him is that he has working hard to get better at his craft. He seems to like his job and enjoying being around the UCLA community. It’s a huge difference from the contemptuous approaches by the LA Times and OC Register reporters.
Gold by no means is a UCLA homer but at least he doesn’t hate the Bruins or hate covering us. He has also done a good job of trying his best to understand the UCLA fan community as well. I hope he keeps it up.
The sports page is not the Op-Ed page
They should be reporting the facts objectively not doing advocacy.
If their movie critics had the same sort of bias they’d be giving rave reviews to films from one certain studio while panning those of another studio. The studios (and their employees) would have a right to object to that. The fact that the bias in reporting could hurt their ticket sales – and livelihood – gives them reason to express that objection. Our school isn’t going to deign to publicly cry “foul” over this so we Bruins have to.
But when we express our outrage – let’s not sound like we’re whining “We want a major metropolitan paper doing PR for us, too.” We want the facts. Just the facts.

I Too Am Concerned By Presley's Record of Suspensions
and, I’m wondering whether he might need the remainder of the season away from the team to get his head straight.
That said, I trust CRN to do the best thing.
sjh
reason
Tough to say what his deal is w/o knowing all the details. It could be for the dumbest things, cooking hot dogs with the coffee maker in the hotel room, almost starting a fire. :P
But, back in reality not looking good.
Wait 66!
Are you telling me that you can’t cook hot dogs in a coffee maker? I always thought it added a different flavor that us coffee lovers really would enjoy. That sucks, now I’ll have to figure out a different way to get my hot dogs cooked while on the road.
I trust CRN as well..
The length of suspension, I am sure, is matched to the severity of the crime. Without knowing what these guys did, it is difficult to comment on an appropriate punishment. Presley hopefully is figuring out that breaking the rules will not be tolerated. Missing a game here and there is going to add up for the young man and will create a repuatation that the NFL will be well aware of. That is if if performs to a level that the NFL is interested in to begin with.

wishful sportswriters
wishful thinking for the Trojan Times, after all it would deflect attention from the ineligible downtowners and their recent collapses
Ditto on the thanks to Jon Gold in working on objective journalism
Jeezus, those jerks/dimwits/trogan hacks at the OC Register just won't quit
Now they’re claiming as fact that Smith and Presley were suspended for drug violations. Furthermore, they claim that two more unnamed athletes are appealing drug violations. (I’m not even going to dignify their malicious stories with a link. Go find it if you really want.)
And if they do turn out to be right, who the hell is leaking this information to the press before the university issues a statement? They deserve to be fired (if any of this crap from the OC Register is true).
Seriously??
“Drug Violations” would not be a one game suspension. That’s not even believable BS on their part.
Just FYI:
UCLA drug policy calls for a one-game suspension upon a third positive test. The first positive test results in the team doctor being told, mandatory counseling and future testing. The second failed test results in the coach and associate athletic director being notified, with more counseling and tests.
It's a little hilarious to see a Trogan ...
… getting so informed and up to speed about drug policy at UCLA. Specially hilarious after all the steroid related issues that still haunts their dirty, cheating, corrupt program built by Pom Pom Carroll.
Spend a little more time researching the Ting brothers and other “student”-athletes with manboobs coming out of your program before deciding to troll here.

Don’t whine about being victimized (in your comments that have been deleted but preserved for our records). It is pretty clear what your intention was. You came in a heated topic and cleverly inserted your bit to advance the innuendos by the Times and OC Register report. If you actually cared about engaging in constructive discussion then you’d know to stay out of this thread and come back at times when things are lot calmer. Instead you came here just to out some more gasoline into the rumor fire and get “reactions” out of UCLA fans. That is classic trolling.
And don’t respond back and tell us how to run this place. If you do that, you will be gone. You will not get another warning. Thanks.
I would really like to know where I told you “how to run this place.” Again, I haven’t insulted, I haven’t flamed, I’ve made a couple of comments here or there, but nothing to get upset over. The only person that seems to be taking offense with my post above is you. My intention wasn’t to “pour gasoline” nor “get reactions.” If I had wanted to do that, I would have written more, used a smarmy nickname for the Bruins and ended it with my team’s slogan or something. You have elevated it to some other level. I could understand your reaction if trolling was my history on here, but that simply is not true. I’m sure this will get me banned, but so be it.
CPEM
Just by being here you are trolling. Go back to “shitquest chronicles”. You add NOTHING of relevance to this community.
Your commenting history exposes you as the ultimate troll
Your “commenting” history on BN indicates that you have been trolling. You have come on here to attack our members (we have your comments saved) and you also came here to "recommend" posts attacking our moderators. So you are the perfect poster child of how a troll tries to ignite a flame war in rival’s community.
We know exactly what you are trying to do. You are basically trying to provoke from getting yourself banned. We are not going to do that readily.
If I were you, I’d go away. Perhaps you want to read this post on how there are actually Trojans who can engage here in a respectful way. Otherwise, you are now serving up a perfect illustration what trolling looks like on BN.
Drugs are not a team violation they are legal violation.
I know the idiots at the fishwrap have a hard time distinguishing between the two. Drugs would be being handled by cops, not just coaches.
Go Bruins!
Not Business As Usual
I think that the problem is that the Times/Register is not used to this sequence of events. Across town the usual sequence is: 1) A player is caught doing a no-no and it’s reported in the news, 2) at first nothing is done because they, in their arrogance, hope, that it will go away (because, after all, they are $c), 3) negative publicity is generated, and 4) they suspend the player even if it’s only for a few hours, i.e. Havili.
The tradmed is not used to the way UCLA handles these situations: 1) a situation is discovered, 2) fact-finding occurs, 3) the player is suspended, and 4) the media is notified.
This is not business as usual for them.
I'm sure a lot of you are wondering
Why we should listen to Dufresne, Foster, and Reid, who raped and killed a girl in 1990.
Should we even waste 2 seconds on Dufresne, Foster, and Reid, who Raped and Killed a girl in 1990?
Well first of all it’s not true.
It’s not true that DUFRESNE, FOSTER, AND REID RAPED AND KILLED A GIRL IN 1990.
So if you have any proof that DUFRESNE, FOSTER, AND REID, RAPED AND KILLED A GIRL IN 1990, stop gossiping and go right to the police with it.

This is reallly starting to get annoying
Is there anything we can do about addressing this propagand reporting and outright bulls**t? It’s really getting old. Cancelling subscriptions, tweeting, and calling them out via email just doesn’t seem enough. I know Bruins can cut through the crap, but not everyone is a Bruin, and these false reports still affect our image. Should we take out an ad or something? Start our own socal paper?
Actually, they may not need to prove malicious intent --
The standard of malicious intent only applies when the statements are made about a “public figure”. I’m not sure a kid/student/football player is automatically a public figure. If not, a lesser standard of proof is all that is required.
And, if there are false statements of drug use, which is a crime, the case may be based on the theory of libel per se — which means that one need not prove actual damage from the publication.
The bottom line will be dependent on:
1. Whether the allegations are based in truth; and,
2. If not, whether any of the players want to take on the burden of suing a reporter.
If the allegations were sufficiently specific and published — and false — I’d love to see someone take on those who created and spread the rumors.

One idea for students ...
If they OCR and LAT reporters around practices – turn it around on them. Take a flipcam and "interview" those hacks and ask them to justify their nonstop attacks on UCLA. Ask them why their paper was sleeping on the job when SC was cheating away while they have been launching attacks after attack on UCLA? Put these clowns on the spot. Youtube them and embarrass them.
I like this...
a little guerrilla theatre. I’d follow up by asking them what qualifies them to report on sports (according to Dufresne’s bio he was the sports editor for a semester at his college paper and then got a job in the printing dept. at the times). Gold played…my guess is that’s why he seems to actually know something about sports so he doesn’t just focus on malicious gossip.
Go Bruins!
You can tell CRN is totally fed up with the times/ocr types as well.
The way he tries not to roll his eyes when slimers or foster ask a question. And what word did he use today “fabrication”? Anyway, maybe he’ll do something about it, especially after today.
Go Bruins!
OT but don't forget to vote for ATV!
There’s a fanshot about atv being up for rookie of the week. It’s a fan vote (which isn’t evident from the title of the shot) so I thought I’d put it here (seems to be where the action is.
Go Bruins!
Not OT
A vote for ATV is always smack dab on topic.
Simers is My Target
I won’t even link to his series of garbage posts in the last week, but TJ Simers is the equivalent of that funny looking fat dude in the fraternity who believed his sadistic sense of humor and pathological lying was funny. He never got any love from the ladies, nobody wanted to live with him, and he was failing out of school. And he continued his tirade of sadistic comments and insults.
It was tolerable in college, but he’s a grown man and he writes for what passes at the flagship newspaper in this city. I don’t really know why he’s so viciously attacking UCLA fans. His column is completely devoid of professionalism or dignity. Is Tribune Co. that hard up for sensational columns to sell newspapers?
I’m taking my flipcam and I’m going to confront his sloppy reporting jerk with a real “interview.” I hope Tribune Co. goes bankrupt with what they pass off as journalism now days. And then Simers can hope the world “is [still] run by USC graduates.” (from his column today).
Delta Iota Kappa (DIK)
(referencing Van Wilder… not anywhere near as good as Animal House, but it’ll do for this purpose)
It's because we're the ones exposing his weaknesses
He hates that people are beginning to see him as the talentless hack that he is. You would think that someone in his position would feel secure enough if the allegations of bias, mailing it in, and shoddy “reporting” weren’t true, but the vociferous reaction shows that even he knows what he writes is pathetic troll-bait.
What is interesting to me is that he hasn’t made peace with the fact that he is basically a festering boil on the ass of journalism yet, because he’s been a petty little shitstain for as long as I can remember. Anyway, his little temper tantrum piece has revealed far more about TJ than it has about our fanbase, and it’s awesome to know that pointing out even the most obvious of his flaws still gets under his skin.
BN Examiner
with the resources BN can muster, Simers and the like are out-numbered. Newspaper business models such as the Trojan Times are increasingly obsolete in the internet world (started at UCLA of course).
Does it matter?
We don’t even throw the ball. And if we did, we only throw for 5 to 7 yards at a time and anybody can run those routes. Right coach?
Ignore them and they will go away.
I just wanted to share an experience I had a work, because I think it applies to foster and, especially to slimers. I had a colleague who was on the war path against me. New teachers and administrators would join us and he’d get to them on day 1 and start attacking me. For a while I’d get upset and engage and dispute and fight back, start attacking back. At some point, I felt like every time I countered, his energy just got bigger and bigger, kind of like throwing a pebble into a pond and just making more ripples, not letting the water settle nor take it’s natural course…or like trying to reach for a toy boat in the water and pushing further away. Eventually, I stopped feeding the war. I totally disengaged. Without me to counter, well the guy was found cheating in a very serious way and literally disappeared into the night never to be seen by any of us again. I learned a really good lesson…this man needed attention…and without a target, well, he self-destructed. Slimers especially reminds me of this guy. I read his “discussion” about ucla fans today, and he made it quite clear, if we leave him alone, he’ll go away. I thinks he loves the fuel we feed him every time we email him (which he mentions) and I just want to support Nestor and others who have suggested we just leave him alone. Maybe he’ll piss someone else off and start “playing” with them.
Go Bruins!
Foster
Chris Foster updated his story 10 minutes ago… alluding to substance issues ’ Asked if there was a marijuana problem in the program, Neuheisel said, “I can’t comment on any of that.” ’
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-ucla-football-20101013,0,6009673.story
LOL
Talk about a REACH. Not that it’s unbelievable that weed is available in college, but that this is now being used as a lame-ass justification for his over the top reaction this morning. Yes, Mr. Morality Chris Foster is so concerned about marijuana, even though he and his buddies were evidently unconcerned about steroid use, robbery, assault, and rape over at South Central. But hey, at least they don’t light up (and if you believe that, then I have a Pulitzer with Foster’s name on it).
Pot
Meh, it could be worse. Definately not a good thing, but yeah compared to “steroid use, robbery, assault, and rape over at South Central”.
The grand theft by those 3 tards earlier in the year was a bigger issue than this BS, that got handled perfectly.
Sarkasian prolly was getting really excited yesterday ...
… opening up room for three more scholarships.
That is such a dipshit move
You can go ask that question to any football coach in the country and they would be obligated to have the same answer. It’s the law, stupid!
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
But how many people know that,
and how many would be led to believe that RN is covering up by Foster’s excessive innuendo? That’s the problem: too many people will take innuendo as fact.
It's why it's a dipshit move by the reporter
he knows that RN legally can’t comment, and he doesn’t say that. It’s his job to inform his readers, but instead he takes advantage of their ignorance.
Then again, I may be giving Foster too much credit…he’s probably way too stupid to know that.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
