Bruin Hoops: Great Yahoo Article on Josh Smith

Great article about Josh Smith at Yahoo in the basketball section:

UCLA’s roster lists Smith at 305 pounds, and no one at UCLA will say whether that measurement was recorded before Smith had reached the peak of his weight loss.

Whatever the case, the noticeably-leaner Smith has an extra bounce in his step. It certainly didn’t come easily.

UCLA’s dietician devised a meal schedule that Smith said he adhered to for the entire summer. Dinner in the Bruins dining hall often consisted of two chicken sandwiches along with rice and fruit. If Smith was still hungry, he ate additional apples, oranges and bananas “instead of sucking down extra cheeseburgers.” Much like that pizza from B.J. ‘s, Smith said those kinds of foods hardly appeal to him anymore.

“He’s dedicated himself,” Howland said. “He’s changed his lifestyle.”

He's going to be difference maker this season. With the addition of Tyler Lamb and Lazeric Jones UCLA is going to roll over the Pac-10. I hope they will make everyone forget what happen last year. This season should be a great one. UCLA needs to play like champions. UCLA is the greatest college program in the country. They need to never forget that.

KLove is good. That we all know. But I want to be even more ambitious

Let’s hope he plays like Karl Malone. His physique does resemble the mailman. And the mailman delivers each time.

Hopefully he can be as good

as Arnett this year.

Whoever is Arnett, at least Smith can be a Dragovich

that defends, blocks out in the paint, shoots accurately and doesn’t turn over the ball as if he was flipping pancakes.

That’s all I ask.

LOL!

Looks like you missed out.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

strangely omitted from the yahoo piece

which really throws the journalist’s credibility out of the window, IMHO.

by britishbruin on Oct 7, 2010 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

The omission was understandable

Arnet really didn’t have a lot of improvement to make in his game this off-season.

Whoever is Arnett

is HILARIOUS. This would not have been funny last week. Thank you Doc Mexi!!!

I hope he's exaggerating

when he says he didn’t touch a basketball between June and September. That would be a little crazy.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

This is exciting

I wonder if Howland learned a lesson or two from the way he approached KLove and Bobo. I throw KLove into that mix because anyone who’s seen him lately knows that the kid could have been in much better shape during his days as a Bruin.

Looking over our probable starting lineup this year I’ve gotta ask when was the last time we had a five-man group that included a real center, a real power forward, a real small forward and so on?

by LVBruin on Oct 7, 2010 12:23 PM PDT reply actions

I think he did

unless his starting lineup looks out defensive lineman, or prime candidates for obesity study at Mayo Clinic.

Did UCLA have

a dietician (sp?) when KL was there? They showed something about that on the weekly football show and for some reason I remember them saying it was something new. perhaps within the last couple of years.

by King J77 on Oct 7, 2010 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

They have had a dietitiian on staff forever

I remember back in the 1980s football players complaining about the dietitian and on the flip-side, the dietitian giving Reggie Miller a diet to gain weight.

Anyone seen him live or a picture of him?

The first line of the story says no one will confirm whether he is 305 now or before he started working out. I want to see him live before I get all warm and fuzzy over his alleged fitness and dietary improvements.

by Bald Eagle on Oct 7, 2010 11:48 PM PDT reply actions

....

The article says he lost 40 pounds. Was he 340 when he enrolled? Anyone who things 305 is an ideal playing weight is nuts.

by Bald Eagle on Oct 7, 2010 11:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Timeline

I believe the workout plan started in June and the report of him weighing 305 came in July. I don’t think he weighed 345 then dropped to 305 in one month and has since maintained his weight. More likely he had only lost a fraction of the 40lbs to get to 305. If I had to guess based on all the reports we’ve read, he started around 320 and is near 280. Regardless, the one thing that’s being reported as fact is that he’s worked his tail off to drop 40 lbs which is an extremely significant amount. Looking forward to seeing him play!

Well

Saw him in person during the Stanford game when he was tailgating with friends (including Malcolm Lee). He is a big boy but looked to be in solid shape. However, can’t really how much he weighed.

by Nestor on Oct 8, 2010 3:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I've seen him several times

I’m not sure how anyone would go about guessing the weight of someone that tall. The best I can say is he doesn’t look fat.

I don’t think he needs to be at his ideal playing weight this year. As long as he’s fit enough to be reasonably active and stay on the court for reasonable stretches he’ll be a very effective player. I think his sophomore year is a better target for his being completely fit and ready to hopefully dominate.
