Stepping Away

I will keep this post short and to the point.  I am going to be stepping away from this community after today. This shouldn't be surprise to anyone here. We knew this day was coming sooner or later. We have talked about it in detail before.  It is time for me to go ... at least for a while.

The wonderful frontpage crew is going to keep the show going on BN. Of course they are going to count on everyone's help to keep this community thriving in the coming days, weeks and years.

As for yours truly, let's not consider this a goodbye. Even if I am not around here in blogging or commenting in this community, I will be around and closely follow all the passionate and incredibly intelligent observations on all things in Bruin blue and gold. If time is right again I may come back in the upcoming months or years but please don't wait and please help the guys on the frontpage to keep this baby going.  really hope more bloggers and writers emerge from this amazing place.

For now though just wanted to thank everyone here for glorious 5+ years. It has been an awesome ride.  Thank you.

GO BRUINS.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

posts 6049 comments 26779 are the official numbers for Nestor. The unofficial numbers 365 days a year for over 5 years of dedication to UCLA Athletics and BN. Wow. There is no way a crew can equal that.

You will be sorely missed.

Sad day for BN

You will be missed my friend. It has been a real blast blogging with you here and good luck with everything in the future.

You know, of course, that now that’s you’re stepping away after 5+ years of being tortured with mediocrity from our football program, they’re going to explode into the top 10 in the next season. ;)

See you around dude and thanks for everything.

Godspeed N

I use the word “epic” a lot. Most of the time as an embellishment and often sarcastically. But I can safely say without exaggeration or sarcasm that your contribution here has been nothing short of epic.

Leaving At the Top

Whatever the success levels of our teams, BN has remained number 1 in whatever poll could be taken.

You are leaving your team at the top — with great “recruits” and momentum. None of that “bare cupboards” stuff here.

You’ve built an incredible community — given us Exiles a sense of connection and a place to be.

And, many of us, although we would not know you were you to sit at our table in the coop, hold you close as a dear friend.

May your journey bring you joy and may you cross this path, over and over, soon.

Best,

sjh

Wow, thanks for everything Nestor.

I’m new to BN, but am so grateful for all the work you (and others) have put into this place. For so many of us that deeply care about our Bruins, well we, I, deeply appreciate your devotion and hard work. I can’t imagine how you did this every day, with work and family. I hope whatever you’ll be doing, even if it’s what you already do, that you get as much joy out of it as you’ve brought to us…even when it was difficult given the state of things. Thanks for you investigative work, your writing, and your sanity. And I hope to see you piping in every now and again.

Good luck and enjoy.

Go Bruins!

The mark of a true leader.

Many people can run a business, a team, or even an online community with reasonable success. The mark of a true leader, though, is when they can leave knowing that not only did they create something special, but something that can be sustained even after they move on. I have no doubt that BruinsNation will remain a vibrant community, with thoughtful contributors and posts grounded in reality, and that will be in large part due to Nestor’s efforts. He set the tone for this community, making it clear that flame posts and knee jerk reactions would not be tolerated, while still encouraging participation; giving countless thoughtful and intelligent Bruin faithful a place to discuss and enhance the experience of their passion.

Thank you, Nestor, for your contributions. Even though you won’t be writing the posts every morning, or giving your input in comments, your presence will still be felt as long as this community persists.

We're havin' too much fun today. We ain't thinkin' 'bout tomorrow.

With all due respect to the other fantastic managers and editors of this site, I really don’t know how this site will go on without you, Nestor. Your incredible insight and passion for all things UCLA, coupled with your exceptional writing style and ability is unparalleled. To say that your contributions to this community are crucial is a supreme understatement. You have set the bar very, very high. You will be missed.

Probably going to catch some flack, but please read my entire comment before blasting me :-)

Nestor has his detractors.. sometimes deservedly, but most of the time not. He’s poured his heart & time into making this THE go-to Bruins website. Not everyone agreed with the direction Nestor directed at times or the “restrictions” on differing opinions, but what people don’t see is the extent to which that firm guidance is needed at times to keep a community on track & not get mired down like so many others blogs, boards, etc have.

What Nestor & the frontpagers have built here is nothing short of amazing. Nestor, thanks for making this place what it is today – a place where Bruin fans can share our common bond. Keep it going frontpagers & hope to see you back in the future Nestor!

Cheers.

Holding up the fingers in "V" formation for ya, Nestor

Thanks for everything. As ‘66 said, you’ve built an incredible community. I’m sure we’ll be hearing from each other again soon. But in the meantime, I’ll just express myself the way all Bruins do at the end of something monumental at UCLA.

Hail to the hills of Westwood,
To the mighty sea below;
Hail to our Alma Mater,
She will conquer every foe.

For we’re loyal to the Southland,
Her honor we’ll uphold;
We’ll gladly give our hearts to thee,
To the Blue and to the Gold

Hope to see ya at another tipoff again in the future

I think Nestor deserves this as well

In honor of the epic win (vastly overused phrase, but truly applicable here) of creating BN:

We’re looking over our dead dog, Rover,
That we overran tonight (all right!)
One leg is broken, the other is bent,
And in his head, there’s a great big dent.
No need explaining the parts remaining
Are scattered all over the web (next page).
We’re looking over our dead dog, Rover,
That we overran tonight!

I think it only fitting

that we go to Coach on this…

“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

To wit, what I get from this kernel of wisdom from Coach is that you, Nestor, should have peace in your decision to step away for awhile, since you’ve most definitely made this website the success that it is widely acknowledged to be (not just here in this community, but in the wider sports blogosphere in the ’net).

Thank you, Nestor!

Nestor, thank you for such an awesome and epic contribution to the UCLA community! Where else but BN can one find such a combination of thoughtful commentary, knowledge of UCLA’s sports history, blunt and funny critiques of the fishwrap, vigilant monitoring of our unsavory rival across town, and wary yet hopeful desire that, darn it, this will be the year Bruin football finally “turns the corner” (hahahaha).

As a Bruin in exile in flyover country, starved for news about UCLA, I’m grateful for your steady stream of news and wisdom. There must be many alumni like me who are now hopeless BN addicts because of you and many other smart and witty writers who contribute to this blog. : ) My wife may resent you for your role in keeping me glued to the computer, but I think I’m better off with a daily UCLA fix.

Wow. 5 Years! Excellent Job!!

From one former blogger to another … Congratulations Nestor and Great Job!

As someone who ran a blog for 2 years, keeping up with all the news, having to do some investigative journlism of my own just to get a story right where the MSM couldn’t or wouldn’t, all the while holding down a full-time career, not to mention having a life, I know first hand how much effort it takes to keep something like BN going. It’s all the more impressive that you have done it for 5 years while building one of the most respected and visited sports blogs in the nation.

I dont have much time to read online anymore – and since I married a European and moved to somewhere in Europe I can’t attend games – but I still come here to BN every once in a while to catch up on whats happening. Its by far the best source. And though BN will not be the same without you N, you have created such a great legacy with your efforts that BN will thrive even more with the staff that will continue on. Well done and enjoy the extra time you will have!

Step away is impossible in the digital universe...

Although recent (last few years) arrival, I concur that BN is unique as an online community. I read and believe that it is in large part due to Nestor’s vision and effort. It’s hard to think what this will be like with Nestor’s posts, corrections, admonitions and wisdom. I don’t understand the GBCW in many blogs, often preparatory to a return… so my guess/hope this isn’t a GBCW but rather a passing of community roles to other hands. Surely your passion for the Four Letters we all care about should mean you are still hear to read and respond to other Bruins. I quote you:
Lastly, of course I won’t be leaving this place. When time comes to leave, I will be around still. Posting when I can and offer up all kinds of suggestions when called upon. Our frontpagers are tight crew and we are going to stick together for the duration. We will eventually need a new QB to drive this place. So we gotta start recruiting now because the end might come up – later or sooner.
Nestor's posted a few times

that he was contemplating stepping away. This wasn’t a pissed, I-hate-this-site GBCW, and most likely wasn’t due to any particular crisis that immediately arose (though I don’t know Nestor personally)…but given that he’d floated the idea a few times, it appears to me to have been a reasoned decision.

Does this mean Rye is leaving too?

Aren’t they the same person??? ; )

In all seriousness, thank you for creating, maintaining, and enhancing my first internet stop of the day.

Thanks Nestor

For everything you’ve done for the Bruin community, including telegraphing your departure so this news wasn’t as devastating as it could have been. With all the extra time you’re going to have I imagine it’s going to be like there are 4 of you in every other facet of life going forward. All the best in all your future endeavors and hope to see you back here someday soon.

Nestor, it's been a long ride!

You have left quite a legacy here and have always been an outstanding proponent of UCLA. We salute you, brother!

Nestor

Thanks for creating a community where I can wake up every day and get my dose of Bruins info news (and depressing stuff too…ha). I haven’t been commenting much but I have been here since D’oh-rell and I thank you so much for everything.

The internet won't be the same without you.

Genuinely, thanks for everything Nestor.

Also, if you ever make it over this way, I owe you many, many pints, and I would be only too glad to shell out for them and to get to have a chat in person. Good luck with everything, thanks again.

I feel like my dog just died.

I have been crazy busy the last couple of days and just now saw this.
I am not shocked because this has been discussed, but it’s like death in that you know it’s going to happen, but are never really prepared for it.
N thanks for all your hard work. As others have posted, I have often wondered how you ever found the time and perseverance to post with the frequency that you have.
Though I have only been part of this community for a little over a year, you all have become my extended family.
N, you WILL be missed.
The best to you in whatever endeavors you have in the future.
Take care.
Hope to see you pop in on occasion.

All the best.

I’m not quite sure how to express how indebted I feel. Nestor, through BN, has been part of my daily life nearly every day for the past five years. Nestor, you are a great Bruin and you have ensured that this place developed into the vibrant community that exists today.
Thank you, and Go Bruins.

Don't worry

As great as our boy Nestor was, we’re proud to announce we have not only a solid replacement, but one that will just take this place head-and-shoulders above where we’ve been before.

That’s right folks.

Dr. Mexican is joining the front page crew.

I hear he’s like one of the top 20 or 30 greatest bloggers of all time.

I’m kidding. Sorry, N, I couldn’t resist the chance to make the joke. We’ll all miss you a lot buddy!

For all that you have done here. I hope you will still visit from time to time.

As a result of Nestor's departure...

…a certain Cal blog and a certain $C blog will have 50% less content.

It’s been fun N—we’ll miss you (on the front page anyway).

Sorry to see you go, but I certainly understand the need to manage your time and life. The reason it was such a demand, was because of the quality of the input, which you required of everyone. I certainly hope that we can all keep this thing going at the same high quality level.

It takes formidable achievements for Bruin players to achieve two-initials status—AA, JF, DC, RW, and so on.

It takes mythical achievements for Bruin fans to achieve single-initial status. To date, there is, to my knowledge, but one,… N. This “singular” achievement and accompanying status is richly deserved.

Thank you sincerely and profoundly, N, for creating and nurturing this vibrant and articulate community. Your stamp, insisting on reasoned thinking and civil discourse, is felt in every post and in every comment. Your stewardship has made BN, I think, the flagship of independent UCLA communities and a paragon of how they should be done.

Go Bruins. Go N.

Thank you for all you have done Nestor!

Was just catching up from the last couple of days and stumbled onto this. I’ve only been posting the last few months, but even then, I feel like a part of me is already missing finding out that N has left. I really appreciate all that you have put into this site and it really is a tribute to you that so many people have posted already. Now that it is actually Thanksgiving, let me be the first to thank you today for all you have done. After all, a few months ago, I wasn’t still reading blogposts at 3 in the morning. So, you must have done something right! Thank you and good luck to you!

Good luck, and nice job

I have not agreed with everything you wrote, Nestor, but it is a compliment that I READ it all. You showed tireless energy, determination, and insight. And, your work was entertaining.

Good luck, Uber Bruin.

Thank you for the gift of BN

Once you get past food, water and other things of that nature, I can’t think of many things that are a more essentially part of my day than this site. I don’t know where Bruins Nation actually ranks in terms of web traffic but I just checked my personal browser history and found that my three most viewed sites are Google, BN and Facebook. Not bad company to keep.

Thank you for all the hard work and time you contributed to make this website what it is and for the excellent job you did. And thank you for being so gracious with my fanposts and so kind as to sometimes bump them up to the front page which I had never expected to happen.

I’ll miss the great enthusiasm and passion you brought with you every single day to BruinsNation. Best of luck to you and thanks again.!

Sometimes ya just need a breather

Thanks for the management and stewardship of the site. Lots of hours for someone with a (more than) full time day job, and tough to maintain for so many years. You will be missed, give yourself the time and break you need, and see you back to visit when you can.

The voice of Bruins Nation signing off...

Nestor, thank you for your dedication and passion that has defined this community. Bruins Nation has captured the best of UCLA: from the athletic field, to our academic halls, and beyond.

Thank you!

Are you itching yet Nestor?

I know it’s only been a week but you must be itching to spill your guts out on this blog or some other blog! With so much dedication & complete UCLA immersion, this must be hard for you (or completely liberating but I doubt it ;)). You can always come back to this blog as “Chestor” or “I’m not Nestor, Really” or something to that effect. No one will ever know!

Anyway, just wanted to add my thanks to your hard work, dedication, & loyalty to the UCLA family. This really should be your full-time job and hopefully that could be reality someday if that’s what you want to do.

Best of luck to you my friend!

Cheers N

your honest, straight forward, and fact based opinions on all things UCLA really got me interested in sports bloging in general, and now they have become part of my daily reading, especially this blog.

I know I’ve kinda gone in to a lurking mode for a while, especially now that I’m so involved with SMU athletics, but you and the community you helped create here really opened up a world of interesting and intelligent banter to me…so thanks
