OL Mustoe De-commits, Headed To Colorado

Just ran across this on the net:

Marc Mustoe switched his commitment from UCLA to Colorado on Saturday and the Arvada (Colo.) Arvada West offensive tackle said he's been so excited about the Buffaloes' new coaching staff and the direction of the program that he felt it was the right move to make.

Not sure if I really care about losing this 3-star O-Lineman.  To be quite honest, CRN is a beast in recruiting and I am not worried at all about this.  In February, CRN will be reeling in another class.  He just needs to start coaching up the talent he is bringing in.  I have heard that we are in with many guys from around the country, and I have faith and CRN has proven that when it comes to recruiting, he will bring in talent.

Good Luck at Colorado Mr. Mustoe. When you come to So. Cal in a few years, hopefully we will have it turned around and take it to your Buffs!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Hope you're right Muircoach

It’s stil early but that’s the 2nd OL we’ve lost.

by suctoejam on Dec 12, 2010 10:31 AM PST reply actions

We're not in a position to lose any linemen

The way our line has played a 3 star commit is a loss. It means that the coaching staff has to expend time and energy recruiting a replacement.

by Raybru on Dec 12, 2010 12:46 PM PST reply actions

Coach, you're more relentlessly positive

than I am. Can anyone offer any insights into which recruits we are targeting? From the Scout.com’s website. It seems like the list of uncommitted recruits is pretty short. Most of the top recruits have already committed.

by EdO'B3017 on Dec 12, 2010 1:03 PM PST reply actions

We're in the running for...

Hobbi, , Flavin (from Mich.) and Donovan Smith out of Maryland for OT, and for DT, we’re going for McReynolds, Heyward, and Darian Cooper. Shelton is likely to UO, and i’ve heard conflicting things regarding Heyward and McReynolds.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 13, 2010 10:10 AM PST up reply actions

We need bodies though

Maybe he’s not a huge loss individually, but it would be nice to have available depth in the future.

by SuperBruinMan on Dec 12, 2010 2:45 PM PST reply actions

Also I trust Coach Palcic's judgement

star rankings don’t mean much when it comes to OL prospects, and Palcic is one of the best at finding and developing talent. Therefore, I take any OL de-commit as a loss both individually and to the program.

I understand everyone getting worried

however, I would leave that for the field where CRN has done accomplished a thing. As for recruiting, he has proven to be a monster. As of yet, the lack of a quality product on the field has proven not to be a negative for CRN. Will it? I have no clue. However, he has been a terror so far in recruiting in his three years, and I expect him to do well this year……as he always does. Now, when the negative stuff on the field comes back to haunt him in recruiting, then we’ll have big problems, but that hasn’t happened yet. As I said, we are in on alot of guys, and we’ll get our share of good guys. We don’t have alot to give, so that may be a positive for CRN right now. He can afford to be selective right now because of the low number of scholies. Here is an article on how the Pac-10 is faring, and you will see when they talk about UCLA that they expect CRN to close on some of these guys. Here is the link:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=5879311

I know somebody already posted this a few weeks ago, but with the recent defections, I thought it was good to show again. Trust me, CRN will do well come February. What I can’t guarantee is that he’ll do well come September. That is another issue!

by muircoach on Dec 12, 2010 6:08 PM PST reply actions

Don't like this.

I was taking a “win some lose some” stance until reading the link. They mention Mustoe as the leading OL candidate, and we already lost two others to the Beavers! I know CRN and staff will continue to work hard on this, but the discouraging thing is seeing all the local talent getting away. That’s where a win last week would have helped us.

I do like the National recruiting effort though. One of these OL guys might be the next Jonathon Ogden. So far, our OL commits look kind of small, though. I’m guessing that some of the big DL candidates might play two ways in H.S. Gotta sign them first!

by Peter47 on Dec 12, 2010 9:11 PM PST up reply actions

Brendel and White

are by far the leading O-line candidates that we have commmitted.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 13, 2010 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

I think the other thing to take from this

is the Pac-12 South is going to be all the more competitive recruiting in SoCal, now Colorado have an energetic new coaching staff.

by britishbruin on Dec 12, 2010 6:19 PM PST reply actions

Concerned

I know we have limited offers, but CRN can only keep selling with wins and momentum.

I am not positive that we will be seeing a big bump in the end. This class incoming is Dorrellian or worse currently.

I am hoping we get a couple of big bodies to throw into the mix on signing day.

by Seahawcla on Dec 13, 2010 10:29 AM PST reply actions

Kinda strange

that Embree’s first recruit was one that he took from UCLA. Not cool, especially given that he was recently a UCLA coach.

by captainqtp on Dec 13, 2010 2:02 PM PST reply actions

All is fair

in love and recruiting.

Well, except cash for recruiting, despite what toejams think.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

by tasser10 on Dec 13, 2010 3:09 PM PST up reply actions

Which leaves us...as of this morning

With eight commits(Rivals);
4 stars:
Hundley (QB)
3 stars:
Brendel (OL)
Nelson (TE)
Wallace (LB)
White (OL)
Wysocki (OL)
2 stars:
Tai (DE)
Juco Transfer:
Hofmeister (LB)

Trying to research remaining uncommitted 5 and 4 stars and whether we are on any of these guys “high interest” list…so far doesn’t look that good for us…at least on Rivals.

by GemCityBruin on Dec 14, 2010 8:23 AM PST reply actions

Here we go again

Go back and read all the whining last year about what our commit list looked like at this time of year.

Coffee is for closers.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

EXACTLY

sigh…. Bruin hand-wringing has got to be one of the most frustrating parts of being a UCLA fan. It gets to be this time of year, and every program has recruited better than us! We’re screwed! The wheels are off the wagon!

Then eeeeevery february, we all go Rick is amazing! What a closer! What an excellent class!

Everyone just relax please. When feb. rolls around, and if things haven’t improved, then you are free to FREAKOUT. Until then, let Rick work, and enjoy the ride. Some people act like Bruin recruiting is a flogging as opposed to an exciting part of our football program, the part that we (so far) do really well.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 14, 2010 9:53 AM PST up reply actions

Recruiting isn't the issue at all

It’s what we’re doing with the kids when they get to Westwood and throw on that Bruin helmet.

Would definitely agree..

Quote form a post above:

“..and every program has recruited better than us! We’re screwed! The wheels are off the wagon!”

I would venture a guess that 4-8, 15-22, and 0-3 v. USC would occasion a visit to TirePros for a rotation and an alignment at least.

by WHP '68 on Dec 14, 2010 12:16 PM PST up reply actions

I wasn't discussing

on field product. Just recruiting.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 14, 2010 1:03 PM PST up reply actions

Nah, that ain't it...

Yes, yes, yes….coffee is for closers. Yep, wasn’ t that “fun” last year, watchin’ the feed on-line live while CRN reeled in some nice talent?!
Frankly, I think one of the signs that a program has turned the corner is when 4’s and 5’s publically (and early on) make preferential statements about us. At this point I dont see us being in the same group of elite recruiting university’s.
I was very proud of what the staff accomplished, especially last year. I would like to see us on the short list of more stud talent coming right out of the gate. That is when we know we have started to turn the corner long term.
That said…I am cautiously optomistic that CRN can work his magic and slam dunk it again on LOI day.

by GemCityBruin on Dec 14, 2010 12:22 PM PST up reply actions

Well...

Huh?….What?

Maybe I’m reading way too much into this but…look what I said…literally as of this morning we have 8 guys verbally committed…who they were….and not much professed interest in us by many 4/5 star available’s…(which is disappointing)…where is the disconnect? I didn’t say "ohhh…the sky is falling…."

Wow…do I have my "thin" skin on today or what !?!

by GemCityBruin on Dec 14, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

I don't understand

how we “do not have much professed interest in us (UCLA)” by 4/5 stars.

We are in the running for the following:

Wayne Lyons, S – 4 stars on scout, rivlas
Marquise Lee, LB – 4 stars on scout
Junior Pomee, WR – 4 stars on scout
Cyrus Hobbi, OG – 4 stars on scout, #2 OG on Rivals
Darius Jennings, WR – 4stars on scout
Christian Heyward, DT – 4stars on scout, rivals
Kevin McReynolds, DT – 4 stars on scout, rivals

How do we not have 4/5 star interest again?

by OswegoBruin on Dec 14, 2010 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

Oh yeah

and an outside shot at Tony Steward, the #1 linebacker in the 2011 class, top 10 in the country.

Aw, heck. We’ll take them all.

by gbruin on Dec 14, 2010 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

We have a good shot

for Hobbi, and a decent shot for the others, with Steward being a long shot.

Not too bad, IMO.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 15, 2010 9:42 AM PST up reply actions

don't forget

Mickey Johnson, DT
Donovan Smith, OT
Tobias Singleton, WR
Darius Jennings, WR
Brennan Scarlett, DE
Devon Blackmon, ATH
Byron Moore, S (JC)

Several of those guys have visited (Scarlett, Singleton, Smith, plus Steward, McReynolds, Colt Lyerla, Harvey Langi, Aaron Wallace, and Hundley were all at out for $C weekend; Lyons visited earlier), Heyward is scheduled for January, we are listed as finalists on most of these guys…

Many of these guys have said solid things coming out of the visits, as well. Tony Steward was wowed, apparently, for his first time out west, and has said we are in the hunt (though I doubt we can really push FSU/Clemson). Smith and McReynolds have also said the trip was great. Just sayin.

by Captain Leebeard on Dec 16, 2010 2:20 AM PST up reply actions

We aren't getting

Mickey Johnson or Devon Blackmon. Blackmon is a duck through and through. Byron Moore dropped us from his top 5, but word on the street is we still are in it. I remain skeptical. All the others we have a decent shot for.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 16, 2010 9:35 AM PST up reply actions

well, the thing

with the Ducks is that at some point they will have to close their class. They don’t have a ton of room left. Now, I doubt they close their doors on a prospect like Blackmon, but they have a lot of high profile guys left on their radar and it’s a possibility.

The reason I bring up Johnson is two-fold, and sort of in response to posts below this as well. He visited very early, said very nice things about us, and even listed us as a leader for a little bit there. Isn’t that exactly what people wanted? It also serves as evidence that a kids words aren’t really all that useful.

by Captain Leebeard on Dec 16, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

Fair enough

But I think Oregon will oversign and use this recruiting momentum that they’ve gotten to the fullest. They’ll boot people out at the bottom of their depth charts to make room for as many kids as possible, and they’ll greyshirt like mad.

by OswegoBruin on Dec 16, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions

Being on the "list"...

…I have some nagging doubts, in lieu of a quotable quote, that merely being on the list of considered schools is the same thing.
When Toledo was pulling in top ranked classes in the 1990’s he typically used early “commits” to sell the program to other guys. I think that approach made those two #1 ranked classes in three years of his a reality.
I would like to see more of the uncommitted 4 and 5 star athletes actually having scheduled or taken their visit or better yet, actually said in a quotable source that UCLA is high on their short list.

by GemCityBruin on Dec 15, 2010 10:31 AM PST up reply actions

This is what I mean by moving the goalposts

First we’re not recruiting well enough…which was proven to be false based on the past few years.

Then we’re not on enough early “short lists”…which was proven to be false by the being on the short list of elite recruits provided by Oswego.

Then we don’t have enough early commitments, and they’re not saying enough nice things about us, and the short lists aren’t nearly short enough…

Come on.

In the end it’s all good as you’ve all fallen for my evil plan and done the research that I either;

a) couldn’t find
b) didn’t have the time for this week

…yeah eh ehhh…

Sorry Tydides, I couldn’t resist one last really weak, feeble defense of my crummy, half-effort post of earlier…sorry guys/gals.

I understand your desire

(and really mine as well) for direct quotes of players saying they love a certain school, or it’s high on their lists. However, I’ve learned that what players say to the media rarely corresponds with what they actually think. Some players are exceptions, such as Hundley, who I believe is a totally honest guy and really loves this program, which is amazing, frankly. I will forever back him because of it. Yet then there are guys like Josh Shirley, who never said he even liked our school, and even was considered a solid lock to U$C, and then he comes out and commits to us on signing day. Same with Dietrich Riley, who was long considered a U$C lean, comes out on signing day to us. Then we have guys like Brett Nottingham (GRRRRR) who signed with us, only to oh wait, ditch us for Stanford before signing day. There are countless examples, such as Manti Te’o loving Norm Chow then signing with Notre Dame, his friend Roby Toma loving us and committing then signing with ND, Carroll switching from $C to us, etc etc. It’s more reliable, in my opinion, to go by sources that are good and solid than to rely on what a kid says in the media if that kid is even slightly fickle. Usually where there is smoke, there’s fire, so when a kid is leaning somewhere, it will likely come out.

I too...

…Would like to be able to attribute to an credited source when our name is linked to a potential recruit.
At least with that information one can weigh and apply a guestimate of validity.

credible sources:

ucla.scout.com – Bruin Report Online. Solid stuff, requires subscription.

ucla.rivals.com – Also subscription, don’t know how the quality matches with scout.

ESPNU – more general stuff, but have pretty good breakdowns of players and Greg Biggins occasionally does some good stuff on UCLA recruiting (he covers the west in general); needs Insider subscription.
