Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

Al Golden, the head coach at Temple, and one of the finalists for the head job in Westwood when Dorrell got axed, has taken the head coaching job at the University of Miami. Other UCLA head coaching finalists include John Harbaugh, now the head coach of the 8-4 Baltimore Ravens.

That's John Harbaugh

Jim’s at Stanford (for now). Golden was just one year removed from a 1-11 season when we looked at him. He’s clearly a pretty good coach, but he would have been impossible to sell to the boosters and administration 3 years ago. Neuheisel was the best choice at the time, and I’m not convinced Golden or Harbaugh would have had much better records at this point at UCLA. I’m not as confident in Rick as a was at the end of last season, but in my book, the jury’s still out on him.

Agree with you on all points

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t our concern with John Harbaugh that he had no previous head coaching experience?

Even KD had a better record than RN

Next year will tell whether he was the right choice, but I am convinced now he was not. If you look at the top 25 recruit schools on Rivals, UCLA is not up there. $C is, even with sanctions! The games are finally beginning to take a toll on recruiting. Hundley can help fix things at QB, but he is not the 2nd Coming.

UCLA has rarely been in the top 25 in recruit rankings at this point

CRN has always finished strong and ended up there. I wouldn’t expect a top 25 finish this year because of our limited scholarship numbers, and recruiting may end up being down some because of performance issues, but I’d wait awhile before condemning CRN for not being able to recruit.

Enough with the recruiting rankings already

Did we not just prove that they are meaningless? If there’s one thing you can’t gripe about with CRN, it’s recruiting. We were hearing the same crap last year and CRN closed like a monster.

Yeah, Hundley is not the 2nd coming, he’s only the #5 QB recruit in the country.

Some of you guys, I really don’t know what you’re expecting. You want every top recruit to commit to UCLA, as if there are no other programs out there.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

He's not the "second coming"

whatever that means, but like I said, he’s [supposedly] one of the best QBs in the country and getting him here was a good accomplishment.

If you want to be a smart ass about it, there’s no point in discussing.

This is the problem with a lot of cynical UCLA fans, taking even positive things and turning them into negatives when times get rough.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Or taking negatives

and turning them into positives when there are offseason questions. Look at Jon Gold’s Q&A, and he makes a great point about getting berated by saying this team was likely going to go 6-6, and now when they’re 4-8 he gets berated for saying things are going to get better. It is very hard to win with a fan base as fickle and angry as ours. I can say this because i’m not just a commentator, i’m also a client…errr…. Bruin fan.

There a flaws in the logic there

as has already been pointed out, CRN’s highly rated classes have closed strong and were not ranked highly at this point in the year. Also significant is the fact that we have a smaller number of scholarships to give out this year and our positions of need for the class made it far more likely we would amass 3* recruits instead of a bunch of 4 and 5* skill position players.

If I am not mistaken

OL and DL recruits rarely get the 5-star rating anyway. And we’ve shown that when it comes to those positions specifically, the rankings are not good indicators at all.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

Ya

that’s what I meant when I said that the needs of this class made us more likely to amass 3* star recruits. You explained it better, that post a while back about the recruiting rankings of All pac-10 O-linemen was great.

I remember Al Golden being looked at.

But, I don’t remember him being a finalist. And, I don’t remember John Harbaugh’s name being mentioned at all.

I’m absolutely certain it is my memory at fault and not Bellerophon who is losing it. But, now that I’m being reminded of the process; it makes me believe that DG focused on CRN from the beginning to the detriment of and actual evaluation process.

What makes you think that?

Just “a feeling”? You don’t remember Harbaugh but somehow you remember the process? A lot of money was paid to a professional consulting firm specializing in such hires. You are only bringing this up because CRN had a bad season and trying to pin it on DG blindly going after him. You never said anything during the search. If CRN had a good year, you’d probably say that DG had the vision to go after his guy.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

you can search for their names in the search function

For example, this post has a very negative assessment of the “candidacy” of Golden, with little dissent in the comment threads

followed up with some second thoughts moving him from the “absolutely no way” category to the “unsure” category in Nestor’s eyes based on personal email correspondence – but still with most commentators continuing to be pretty negative about him.

Of course, this comment suggests it is your memory at fault, Mexi…

Sorry, My Mistake about the Rankings

I just remember all the hoopla surrounding that transfer from BYU. Then injuries and…
RN has been a great recruiter, but as has been said here a lot, it’s what he does with them after that is the issue. TD was great also, but it takes more than that.

I am not being a "Smart Ass"

I am not being negative either. You can’t just pin all your hopes on one player to save this team. Troy Aikman was here and did not not make us #1. He went on to win Super Bowls, yet we couldn’t even go to the Rose Bowl with him. Cotton Bowl. We are not fickle at all. We put a lot of faith in RN, and have been sorely disappointed in the drubbing and embarrassment we have gotten in 3 years. Is it negative to ask that a team gets a little better each year? Come on. Expected. The SC game was embarrassing, as was said on BN. With a decent HC and this talent, we should win 8 games next year. Anything less is not fickle.

You guys are the only ones calling him the "second coming"

Tasser is trying to inject a bit of sanity here. Hundley is a solid pickup and a great/elite recruit. There’s a lot of room between that and applying a messianic label to him, which no one is doing except maybe the strawman you’ve set up. And tasser is absolutely right when he says certain people in this thread are taking positive things and turning them into negatives. I mean seriously, the guy hasn’t taken a single snap for us even in practice and already people are bagging on him. Unbelievable.

Can we still go out and get June Jones?

I watched the ESPN 30 for 30 about SMU and how this guy continues to get so much with less is amazing!
