Legends and Leaders: The Big Ten Loses Its Mind
The mathematically challenged Big Ten (with 12 teams) has decided to name its two 6-team divisions the Legends Division and the Leaders Divison. Granted, the geography didn't lend itself to the normal (meaning, not weird) North-South or East-West labels, but really?
If that wasn't self-aggrandizing enough, check out this video, the names on the annual awards, and my personal favorite, the new logo. I'm not sure what the "1" is doing in place of the "i". Leading? Leading the fight against numeric accuracy perhaps.
For the record:
LEGENDS: Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern
LEADERS: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin
Also, nice work breaking up that historic Michigan-Ohio State matchup. The Big Ten Commission just made Larry Scott look really intelligent. See our friends over at Maize n Brew for more detailed and funnier commentary.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Brutal.
I am not completely sold on Larry Scott or the new Pac 12, which has issues of its own, but the Big 10’s new division names and logo are absolutely brutal. Makes the ACC’s “Coastal” and “Atlantic” division names—quick, list which ACC teams are in each ACC division—look brilliant in comparison. The logo is a giant step backwards WRT font, style, aesthetics.
totally agree with your assessment in general
and would add, as far as I can see there has been little attempt to explain how some schools are to be considered to have legends while some have leaders.
But as far as I am aware, Michigan-tOSU will still be the last game of regular season as a ‘protected’ crossover game; and things are set up for them to meet in the title game. Arguments for and against that, but I don’t think it is ‘breaking up’ the rivalry.
Pac-12 divisions should be called
“Legendary Heroes” (UCLA, Washington, Cal, Stanford, Arizona), “Heroic Legends” (Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado) and “Cheaters” (USC).

They paid someone for this?!
It’s TURBLE.
But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.
Oh please
that logo makes ours look professional. It’s beyond lame.

+1
I was just gonna say that. Ours is WAY better. I could have made that logo in 5 minutes (well maybe not “me” but “one” could – hehee!) Plus these division names? What the hell were they thinking? Grade: F.

I'm in no way
suggesting either one are halfway presentable. I suppose I’d guess theirs to be done by a fourth grader, and ours a fifth or sixth grader perhaps. I guess to some extent it’s just the whole glass houses thing…theirs is beyond lame, but so is ours.
Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.
Hate the new logo.
I thought one of the great things about the former logo was the incorporation of the number 11 to signify the eleven teams.
So, the big mystery has been answered, would they change their name to the Big Twelve? Would they retain the same name? How would they signify the 12 teams? etc. The answer is horribly!
The best thing you can do for your children is to love their mother. John Wooden
I kept staring at the logo, thinking a 12 would jump out at me eventually
like those magic eye pictures.
ME TOO!
I liked that “11” hidden in the old logo. I thought that was clever. If they were not going to change their name, then that was the next best thing. Now I’m like “Where’s the hidden 12!?” Maybe they should make it “The B12G Ten” LOL

None of us are too proud of this...
/sigh/
I think it’s hit the point where Delany believes he can do you wrong. And now everyone must suffer.

Am I the only one who likes our new logo?
The Big 10 one is ridiculous though. I have no idea what they were thinking.

Agree with you
Much better!

Just wish it didn’t have to be on the fields so large. The 2 of them facing each direction takes up a lot of space.

Personally
I think the new PAC 10 logo is the coolest one in college football. Mt Rainier for the Washington people or Mt. Hood for the Oregon people or any mountain of your choice for the Cali, Colorado and Utah people, shows up right in the middle of the logo. It’s so friggin cool. No desert for the Arizona folks… but oh well.
God I’m glad it’s ski season….

Great early season skiing in Colorado right now
Come on out. We’ll hit that fall line in the logo – straight down – and laugh at our respective conference admin.
I wonder if the crescent in the 10-12 Pac logo represents a wave for the states with a beach? But that still leaves Arizona with nothing. Maybe it’s a sign. I wonder how can we include sand?

The crescent most definetely is a wave.
I missed it when the logo was introduced, but the press release mentioned a wave, which led to me “discovering” it. Arizona has mountains too (Flagstaff area).

True. Humphrey's Peak, 12.6K ft
is taller than Mt Hood in Oregon at 11,2.
I guess Arizona stays in the conference. Besides, our strip bars need their graduates dancers.

Totally missed the wave too
until I read a story describing how the logo was designed.
But I’m in the camp that believes the new logo is definitely a step in the right direction.

I think it's better than the Big 10's new logo
but just barely. It looks like a highway sign. The 10 is in a huge font in a different color, set aside by all the white space, while the PAC just blends in. We have 10 teams. We’ll have 12. Whoop-de-doo. The emphasis shouldn’t be on the number.

As An Iowa Grad
I’m shaking my head at what the Big 10 has done….
I like the addition of Nebraska but “Legends” and “Leaders” as division names?
And the new logo as well….
Ick.

I liked Kornheiser's comment on PTI yesterday
“Legends and Leaders—it sounds like a Narnia movie.”
I personally prefer the alternative names they were considering: Has-Beens and Never-Weres.

Already seen plenty of fan-created logos popping up…this one is probably the best I’ve seen, way more creative than the official one.

the big ten
Anyway, I’m pretty sure those division tags won’t really catch on…just like how most people still call FBS and FCS teams I-A and I-AA. it will probably just end up being called the michigan division and the ohio state division, unless the big ten wises up and comes up with something better, as I don’t think there is anyone outside of delaney who thinks that those names are cool.
I wouldn't be surprised if all 13 or 14 teams in the Big Ten withdrew from the league because of the division names. They make the logo look professional.
And look for the Big 10 or 11 or 12 commissioner becoming the new commissioner of the Pac 10 or 11 or 12. It is apparent that stupidity is the sole criterion for running a conference, and the Pac 10 or 11 or 12 will not be satisfied at having the second most stupid commissioner. We demand leadership. We want that guy as soon as Nurse Ratchet says he can leave.
Read a story in Houston Chronicle
that fan reaction to the new names was so negative that they are going to abandon them and go back to the drawing boards.
sjh
Yeah
Something like 90% negative. I was thinking something geographically descriptive for division names, like Corn Division and Coal Division. That would probably improve things to an 80% negative rating and it only took me a minute!
