"UCLA defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough and wide receiver coach Reggie Moore were fired Saturday morning, according to a source in the program who was not authorized to speak on the subject..."

Probably the two most people agreed they'd like to see leave. I wonder what this means for Chow.

great news

…well, not for them. But this is an excellent decision by CRN to cleanse two huge problem areas. Let’s see who we can nab as replacements…

Gold says...

…Vic Fangio (Stanford DC) and wait for it…DeWayne Walker, “”http://www.insidesocal.com/ucla/2010/12/bullough-reggie-moore-fired.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter" >have been widely rumored to be sought after."

Would do you all think about a return of Walker? When we had him, I was frustrated at the safe coverage that we had, but we were so much better on defense than we are now. Would be interesting to see what he could do with the talent we have now.

Walker gets a lot of crap around here

and some of it is definitely deserved, but I would be very supportive of this. I always thought he played safe because he didn’t have the athletes to attack. Now he does, and I’ld like to see him get the chance. I think we can do better, but I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to him.

i would love to get walker back

our defense had an identity with him, live by the sword and die by the sword.
which i take any day of the week over, sit back and hope your opponent doesn’t stab you with their own sword.

Not sure what I think

Bringing Walker back seems like more of the same old thing. Going back instead of moving forward.

What is next – Dorrell as Wide Receivers coach??

by Bald Eagle on Dec 18, 2010 12:20 PM PST up reply actions

I don't see the improvement

Has Walker suddenly evolved into a better defensive coordinator than his last tenure? Will he no longer do the prevent defense that cost UCLA the game against Notre Dame? He is supposedly a good local area recruiter and is certainly an upgrade over Bullough, but is he someone that will get UCLA over the hump? Not to mention, he has still not been able to scheme against any spread offense. I’d rather have Stanford’s DC. If UCLA is daring enough to go outside the box and can get the right compensation package together, why not Randy Shannon, formerly of Miami?

by UCLA4Life on Dec 18, 2010 12:33 PM PST up reply actions

"he hasn't been able to scheme against any spread offense"

I don’t get this criticism. You need athletes to beat a good spread offense. Athletes which we didn’t have. Athletes we have now. The talent and skill on this roster compared to Walker’s previous tenure is miles better.

by bucknellbruin on Dec 18, 2010 1:05 PM PST up reply actions

Walker had more talent than Bullough and didn't do much with it

We had the same, inconsistent, slow out of the gate D. A lot of empirical pieces were written during his time. Look them up.

Surely, we can do better from a coaching perspective.

Walker was a good recruiter. But, CRN is a good recruiter.

And, for those of you who have forgotten Walker’s behavior during the process in which CTS was replaced — it was not good.

I really think we can do much better.

Walker???? NO WAY!

maybe we should all take some time and look back over the old threads when Walker was DC here… The frustration with the prevent defense, and many other frustrations will become come into clear focus. Were there moments of excellence. Yes of course, but the overall tenor of the effort was pedestrian and inconsistent. I am NOT on board with Walker returning, No more BACK TO THE FUTURE, lets move on with some new blood and see if we can turn what everyone senses is an excellent group of athletes on defense, into a group that will stone the offenses of the Pac12. It’s time for a clean start.

+1000

It is hard to believe that anyone who was here during Walker’s term would want him back. His record was far from distinguished. We lost games we should have won (or had “won” but lost because he went into a soft prevent which did not.)

Can his supporters say the word “spread” and still support him? Or Notre Dame? Or the Nut Bowl? Ugh — terrible memories.

All that said, my favorite replacement would be Rocky Long — who, this year, proved that he can still do the job. But, I can understand people not wanting to go back for the future.

Can we agree ABW? Anyone But Walker.

Chow should stay.

I trust him with this offense more than CRN. That being said we need to be stacked at the line. W have HORRIBLE pass protection. Even when it is “decent” a solid OL can make any QB look “gifted”. Our WRs need to learn how to fight for the ball and to not stop until the whistle is blown. Good news let’s pick up some proven coaches.

FRONT PAGE PLEASE!

Finally some “positive” UCLA news. It’s been very difficult being a UCLA fan these past weeks. Now it’s time for Dan G & Co to pony up some $$$$$$ to get us back on track!

Hopefully Rick already has some top coaches already lined up. I would imagine news of hirings should be relatively quick for recruiting purposes – especially if you’re a recruit that has been dealing with either of those 2 coaches. Wouln’t be surprised if new coaches are announced late next week.

I wouldn’t mind having Walker back. He’s an above average DC & an excellent recruiter – which is obviously very important with the local kids.

This is going to sound mean

I normally wish fired coaches the best in their future jobs. However, I hope Chuck Bullough reconsiders ever being a defensive coordinator again. I have never, ever seen a worse DC coach the Bruins. Since the end of the season, I’ve gone back and painfully watched parts of several games this year. There’s no use to rehashing all the flaws that any 3-year old could see in Bullough’s game. It was a terrible, terrible mistake promoting him. I do wish him the best in general, but not as a defensive coordinator. No fan base deserves that incompetence.

As for Reggie Moore, he simply didn’t coach his kids. He had all the talent in the world to work with and his guys simply regressed. Certain things aren’t his fault, such as less time for the QB to throw the ball and a coaching staff that couldn’t get a consistent healthy QB if their life depended on it. But having receivers never fight for the ball, never able to disengage from DBs, and drop what seemed like 50% of the balls that hit the numbers between their chest is just unacceptable.

Two obviously necessary fires that hopefully will result in something, anything better. Our Bruins roster is the kind of team that, with competent coaches (not even necessarily great ones), can turn a 4-8 season into an 8-4 one. I don’t want to bring back Walker. I see that as settling for mediocrity since anything is better than Chuck Bullough. We need a new DC, completely removed from the Bruin family that can come in with creative and new ideas.

by BruinMW on Dec 18, 2010 1:08 PM PST reply actions

Aliotti?

Bullough was not good, but Aliotti’s year here was an apocalypse. Every time I see him on tv for an Oregon game I think of the money he stole from UCLA that season. I swear he was a spy for the Ducks, keeping the Bruins from the national title that season. Can’t stand that guy.

by McNown to Farmer on Dec 18, 2010 4:15 PM PST up reply actions

Yea, that was pretty awful

But I just can’t get over how atrociously bad Bullough was as a defensive coordinator.

by BruinMW on Dec 18, 2010 5:10 PM PST up reply actions

I hate to see anybody fired...

10… and so I hope they land on their feet. At the same time, I hope CRN picks guys who can teach our kids to maximize their potential and abilities.

I don’t expect a national title or even a pac-10 title every year. But I want to see our kids grow and progress. If our assistants don’t look like they’re learning during the season, then how can they teach our players to do so?

DW may not have been perfect – especially vs. spread sets – but at least the d fundamentals improved under his watch (dennis keyes not withstanding). He taught the kids to play solid aggressive d. I would definitely take that.

by suctoejam on Dec 18, 2010 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

Just 3 things I would like to say regarding this topic.

1. Regarding the defense, I really do not care who we bring in as a DC just as long as they promote a defense that is aggressive, hard hitting & they are not predictable. 2 Regarding the receivers coach, they need to bring in a guy that can teach the guys proper routes, how to catch the ball & basic football skills to compete at this level. 3 Regarding Neuheisal & Chow, they need to put the best players on the field all the time, period. Just because a receiver, running back or tight end has been there a bit longer than someone else does not give them the right to start. This is not a job & seniority does not matter one bit. If somebody’s feelings get hurt, oh well! The best person at his position has to start. I hate south central with a passion, but I do have to give them credit on this because they always started their best players regardless of how many stars you had. Go Bruins!!!!

Chow

On potential offensive changes:
“The offense is still a place I’m evaluating, and Norm as coordinator is in that category. Im just trying to figure exactly the best way to go. Reshuffling, new personnel; I’m sorting that out in my own mind.”

So far, Rick’s only stated in general terms, “I’m still evaluating”. This time he explicity stated that moving Norm is a possibility. The plot thickens.

These moments always get me anxious.

Like the firing of Dorrell, the first part is good news. The next bit of news is just as important to get right. We have to get home run hires in both departments. With a DC it is easier to get a “name” coach that will make a splash in the media, but whether we get a name or not, we have to get guys that are going to make an immediate difference.

I like the idea of Randy Shannon, but I have no idea how much experience he has as a DC and whether he was a good one or just a serviceable one. While Walker is clearly an improvement over Bullough, I think we need to think outside the box on this one. I like the suggestion of Rocky Long. Personally, I would like to get us somebody out of SEC country. Maybe even Big 10 country. I would like to see somebody come on board with a life long country twang in his speech and believes in hitting hard, hitting often, and jarring balls loose. What can I say? I dare to dream!

Shannon

Prior to being the head coach of Miami, he was their defensive coordinator. A very good one too. Plus, he was a pretty good recruiter for them, but it’s Florida so you’re always gonna find some good players. I wish he’d come but there’s no way it’ll happen since he’s from Miami.

From wikipedia:
“During Shannon’s six years as UM’s defensive coordinator, his defenses ranked as follows in total defense nationally:

    * 2001 – 6th
    * 2002 – 7th
    * 2003 – 2nd
    * 2004 – 28th
    * 2005 – 4th
    * 2006 – 7th"

"I'll make him an offer he can't refuse."

That’s our job anyway. If we want to get a guy like that, we really have to sell the school. I know what you mean when you say he’s unlikely to come; but, the same holds true for coaches from SEC country. We can’t expect money alone to be the draw.

We hear constantly what a great recruiter Rick is; well, let’s see him recruit a guy like Randy Shannon.

Agree about Long

I would much prefer Long to Walker. I don’t see Walker as a home run hire. He’s a solid, competent defensive coordinator, but I prefer Long’s aggressive approach. In this day and age, the QB needs to be pressured and Long goes after him.

However, I wonder how eager Long is to leave SDSU for Westwood, considering Hoke has an extension through 2015 while Rick is most likely gone if he struggles next season. The job security that extension affords Long could make him think twice if given the chance to come back to UCLA.

UT Has A Lot More Money Than We Do

Texas is not bankrupt.

Hard to bankrupt a state that thrives on high energy prices. Even when times are bad in Tx, they are better than most places.

UT’s endowment is huge.

They can make better offers AND money goes a lot farther in Texas. First, there is no income tax. And, the cost of housing in Austin is far less than anywhere close to Westwood.

We can be criticized for not being decisive —but, it’s a bit unfair to think we can compete with the offers schools like UT or sc make. We really can’t.

I personally would like to see Chow stay given once we have a good offensive line in place and our QB is healthy I think we’ll finally see our offensive captialize on there potential, As for who should sucseed Bullogh and Moore once again I think the alums should step up with financial contributions to get a to top notch assistants.

Great news.

I really love some of our WR’s (I’m especially a huge fan of Marvray and Smith!) Watching them in practice, I could see their talent and the talent of many others. I couldn’t believe what transpired in the games. The drops, the strange decisions about who was in the game. I think some of this improved (at least the personnel issue) over time, but I was so sad for our guys that they weren’t getting the best coaching and decision making they could. I was thinking why would any good receiver come for this. I’m so happy for the kids we have and for our program that a new wr coach will be coming. Our kids deserve the best and our program, with the right coaches, can get some of the best to play.

I know this is sad for the coaches, but, as I said, our players deserve the best coaches. They made a choice to come to a great university and they deserve to have the coaching (teaching) that can help them be the best they can be.

Go Bruins!

My thoughts.....for whatever it is worth

First……even though I was a huge proponent that Bullough needed to go, I still appreciate his commitment to UCLA (5 years) and how he is being classy on his way out. Also, Moore is a former Bruin player, and I greatly appreciate his dedication to the program. He has put on the uniform as a player, and he will always be a Bruin through and through. That said, replacing them is in our program’s best interest, and I am excited (yet apprehensive) about who they will get.

DeWayne Walker? No way. No need to discuss or even think about it. He is a Head Coach and would never think of leaving that position for a defensive coordinator job. While he is at a crappy school, the fact is that he has won a total of 5 games at New Mexico State, and if he leaves that school in the shape it is in now, then he won’t be considered for many jobs in the future. Those are just facts…….it was tough enough for him to get a head coaching gig in the first place……..he isn’t leaving….so lets move on.

Rocky Long? Would love it. When he was with us before, I loved his attack-style defense. I am sure if we gave him a raise, he might come. Rumor has it that the Head Coach at SDST may be a hot hire in the next year or two. Does that mean that Rocky would like to stay to be next in line, or get out while he can? We shall see.

Coach Fangio at Stanford? Why would he leave. If Harbaugh leaves, he gets the Head Coaching gig at the Farm. He is locked in there. The only chance?? I believe that CRN and Fangio worked on the same staff together with the Baltimore Ravens. If for some reason they had a great relationship and if for some reason he isn’t next in line should Harbaugh leaves……….then maybe. That is a huge maybe though, really not even worth discussing.

Randy Shannon? No way!! We don’t get guys like Randy Shannon. Just doesn’t happen. He will be swooped up by Texas in the next week or two. Guaranteed!! Would I want him? Hell yeah! He is as good a recruiter as CRN, would lock up Florida recruits for us as he has been there for years, is a class act who changed the image of that formerly gang-ridden school, and had defenses that attacked, attacked, and attacked some more. Would love him, but there is no way it happens. Take all of Chows money and give it to him, let CRN run the offense, and we are Top Ten in two years! I must repeat…….IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!

A name I would like to mention, and this guy can coach. Jeff Fitzgerald, Linebacker coach for the Cincinnati Bengals. Anybody who knows defense knows that he is the coordinator in waiting with the Bengals. He has coached Ray Lewis and some of the best LB’s in the game. He has apprenticed for Mike Zimmer, one of the greatest coordinators in the NFL. In football circles, he is considered one of the best defensive minds in the game. He is from So. Cal, having gone to John Burroughs High School in Burbank in the late 1970’s before going to Oregon State and becoming a star there. I like the West Coast ties, the NFL ties, and he has serious street cred! Trust me, this guy is a star in the making. That kind of hire would be a slam dunk!! Go to Cincinnati Bengals website and check out his bio. Impressive……and no he is not a relative or a friend, but I know enough people to know about him and have followed him for years.

That is all with the defensive coordinator. I only have one questions, and I really am wondering something and would love to know all your thoughts. Could CRN be stalling on CNC to make sure Hundley doesn’t change his mind? While Hundley has publicly stated that he has faith in CRN, he obviously built a bond with CNC. I think the next quarter starts on January 3 (please correct me if I am wrong), so if he delays until after Christmas maybe Hundley is moving out here (since he is starting early) and CRN will be more secure knowing that Hundley is in the fold. Just a thought that popped into my head. Am I off base? Just wondering.

by muircoach on Dec 18, 2010 11:22 PM PST reply actions

Good Stuff

I always appreciate your insights and information. Interesting thoughts on CNC. I’m guessing that the status of the Pistol may have a lot to do with CRN’s decision. If the Pistol is relegated to a situational package, I can see CNC staying – in fact I hope he stays. If the Pistol remains the focus of the offense, then keeping CNC doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

I really think it is in the Bruins best interest with CRN as coach to reinstate the pro set with some shotgun or Pistol situations. Otherwise, if the Pistol remains the focus, CRN might look to see who is available from the offensive staff at Nevada or some other school with “Pistol experience”.

Chow's likely to stay

CNC will have at least one more year to prove himself if he does sign his extension. I’m sure he and his son/agent have a back up plan if he doesn’t stay. The question is how much of the pistol are they going to keep. CRN will likely revert back to more of a pro-style offense which means keeping CNC and use the pistol in varied situations. As we saw towards the end of the season with Brehaut starting, CNC and CRN were already running plays away from the pistol numerous times. CRN and CNC know that Brehaut has to be the guy we need to develop with Hundley behind him. Best of wishes to CCB and CRM but its time to bring in an aggressive DC. I like the Jeff Fitzgerald option too. He would be a great mentor to our up and coming LB coach, Lea. The question will be contract $$- something the UC Regents don’t have. As for WR coach, the choice has to be someone with deep recruiting ties who is also a disciplinarian. I have faith the CRN will chose the right people. GO BRUINS!
