Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

"I enjoyed working here. Obviously I enjoyed working here. This is part of the profession. The only thing is, the only disappointing thing is I don't get to be around these players, who I really enjoy. It's going to be a special defense. Obviously you can see the talent. As soon as they grow up and get older next year, it's going to be a special team, and I wish I would've been a part of it. But that's the profession, and we know that."

Inside UCLA with Jon Gold

May not have been the best coach (okay, understatement), but he's a class act. Best of luck in the future, Coach Bullough.

Jayaan, excellent shot,

Thanks for posting. I agree, class reaction by Bullough.

I’d kinda like to see the mean spirited posts deleted from this site. As far as I’m concerned, there is no place for such sentiments here. Is this any way for Bruin fans to act? Besides, there are plenty of ways to express dissatisfaction without the grade school comments.

I firmly believe Bullough did all he could to make UCLA the best team, win all the games and make his players the best they could be. After all, isn’t that the effort Coach Wooden called ‘success’.

+1 in regards to bashing former Bruins

such as DeWayne Walker, Karl Dorrell (Can we at least refer to him by his name instead of that stupid acronym for Toledo’s successor. Thats a great way to show such disrespect to a great guy) and Nikola Dragovic (Take your grievances out on the person responsible for playing him). I am sure there are others as well, I just do not see the point in listing all of them when negativity is the standard.

Well...

I think it is fair game to bash Walker for certain aspects of his performance, and for rumors he and his family planted in the media during the hiring process.

It is fair game to bash Karl Dorrell for many football-related inadequacies. Can’t really bash his personality because, um…there isn’t much there to bash.

And it is absolutely fair game to bash Dragovic for the way he represented the four letters, not just on the court but via his behavior off the court.

Well-founded criticism is not out of bounds in these cases. Personal attacks may be out of line, but anything relating to performance is fair game. And it will forever be Brickovic or Serbian Bricklayer for me.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

You cant fault Dorrell for being a bad coach

You can only blame the person responsible for hiring him. All he did was accept a challenging job which he thought he could perform. I do not know one male who would not do the same. Of course you can make a point that he was a mediocre coach but referring to him as CTS does not resemble “the four letters” very well. Not saying you do or do not refer to him as I dont mark down names.

I’ll give you Dragovic’s off the court issues but on the court is a different ball of wax. Howland is the person to voice your concern at, for he is the one who gave an inadequate player so many minutes. All Drago did was play to his best ability, which was not great. Although one must admit he did have the occasional good game.

If you have noticed a theme, everything starts at the top. I know there has been a lot of criticism on BN at the institution as a whole which I completely agree with. So I just do not see the point of bashing the product of poor management when management itself is to blame. Hopefully one day, someone at UCLA will realize that you get what you put in.

Didn't Dorrell do some good?

OK, he was not able to perform in the win column, but didn’t he clean up what had become quite the mess from prior to his hire?

Also, he was a player, a student athlete who well represented UCLA. I just don’t get how he deserves the mean spirited terms.

I’ve heard it said that what someone says about others says more about the speaker than it does the target. I always try to post as if the person I’m talking about were in the room, could ‘hear’ what I was posting. It’s not hard to be critical without being derogatory.

Cutesy labels are a bit fun at times, but sophomoric when overused.

Here we go

The defenders are out in force, just like they were for Lavin.

I won’t go back and show you all the posts we had of things KD did that were not very Bruin-like. Now, I don’t go around bad-mouthing him, but

Blaming the superiors for a bad coach is a cop-out and I will not stand for it. Yes, I will blame Carnesale for hiring Dorrell, and of course I can fault Dorrell for being a bad coach. He sought this position and sold himself as being able to do it, so of course I can fault him.

Your most hilarious line, however, is this:

All Drago did was play to his best ability.

Absolute comedy. Yes, I blame Howland for giving him so much playing time, but I fault Brickovic for lollygagging through games and standing on defense with his finger up his ass.

Sorry, but good management means getting rid of underperformers. Constantly passing the blame up the chain is a cop-out, people must be responsible for their own performance. The “theme” of which you speak, I have not noticed and do not subscribe to.

But you know, feel free to go do a crappy job at your work and hope that your boss gets fired for it.

But hey, what do I know. I’m just the 800 lbs bruin in the room.

I Respectfully Disagree.

It is all about personal responsibility. I do not agree that someone is absolved of critisim if he did his best even though his best wasn’t good. If I hire a doctor to perform surgery and he botches the job even though he tried real hard, you better be sure he will be held accountable.

Coach Dorrell was a fine player and a good representative of UCLA. He was not a good head coach. Period.

Dragovic had run ins with the law and problems respecting women. By all accounts, he did not give damn about playing defense and, in part, it cost UCLA the 2009-2010 season. I do not think he played to the best of his ability. I do not think he put in the time and effort to playing D. I think he cast up 3 pointers 10 seconds into the clock knowing that it was wrong but did it anyway. This is NOT giving his best effort. His occasional good games were because he scored points. That is not to say that there were not other issues. There were. CBH deserves some balme too for sticking with the guy. But, again, absolving Dragovic from responsibility is wrong IMHO.

DeWayne Walker Is Not a Former Bruin

He is a former UCLA employee.

Most of us who use CTS do so only when talking about KD and his job with our athletic department. IIRC — the phrase was coined by Fox who could not put the words Coach and Dorrell next to each other.

However, I think we all respect Karl Dorrell as a brother Bruin and have always wished him well — we just did not want him in charge of our football program. Look at many of the posts we wrote. I for one, wrote a long post about a good man not doing very well. Others offered similar words.

I have deep respect for Karl Dorrell the player and the person.

I disagree with faulting CBH for playing Dragovic for all of those minutes. It’s now clear that Brandon Lane was more seriously injured than we knew and CBH had little choice but to play ND.
