4 Years Ago Today, We Beat sc

To date, the video below is my favorite UCLA Football video. I was a 5th year senior on the UCLA Drumline at the time, and the team treated me to a great graduation present: my first (and so far only) win over sc since I started being a fan in 2002.  Going into the game, I didn't have high expectations -- we were 5-6 and sc was the #2 team in the country.   I thought that it was going to be the first year that I wouldn't be able to go to a bowl game (always a good time for the band).  I had witnessed some pretty uninspired games during my career, but for some reason this game felt different from the beginning.  There was something palpable in the air, some kind of energy I hadn't felt before.  As I walked out of the tunnel and onto the field for my last pre-game performance, my last "Script UCLA", I knew that I wouldn't forget this day.  I knew that after witnessing four miserable rivalry games, that this year would be different.

We were going to win.

I'm man enough to admit that I cried at the end of this game, especially during the band's post-game goodbye ritual for the seniors on the field.  Although the stakes are different this year (sc was playing for the championship game, we were playing for a bowl game) I hope that this year's graduating seniors can experience what I experienced -- a triumphant and memorable win in their last game at UCLA.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of BruinsNation's (BN) editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of BN's editors.

Nice.

likewise, I had to wait to my fifth year at UCLA to finally get that 1st win over sc then UCLA roll off 7 more so hopefully this class will experience that the same as my class then yours.

This is one of my favorite YouTube moments

That was an amazing and physically and emotionally draining game at the Rose Bowl. I could hardly talk for a week afterwards we spent so much time yelling and cheering for that team.
Four years…ugh….four long years…shhhhesh…pitiful.
I want to beat those guys so bad…I took this coming Monday off to hopefully let my voice heal.
Go Bruins…beat $c

No postgame ritual for me

but my last regular-season game in the band was the ’93 comeback against $c with the Rose Bowl on the line for both. Still get goose bumps thinking about it.

Roses are red, violets are blue...f*** $C.

Thanks for The Memories

Just hope every player on this 2010 team gets a chance to view this YouTube video before Saturday. You absolutely had to love the intensity of the defense and the relentless tenacity of the offense. SUC’s QB had to have nightmares for weeks if not months.

In 1959, SUC likewise was the nation’s number 2 ranked team, heavy favorites at the LA Coliseum and we brought them to their knees. Down 3-0 late in the third period we drove the ball 72 yards and kicked the tying field goal. Then after a couple of series we got a pass interference call on a 47 yard pass that put the ball on SC’s 7 yard line and then our FB on the 3rd attempt broke through to give us a 10-3 victory. Southern California was in a state of shock the rest of the game and for their last game against Notre Dame and hopefully for the rest of their lives.

Here’s to our mighty Bruins putting the sting on those cross town thugs once again and start us on a brand spanking new 8-0 string of victories that will make all of us Bruin fans proud once again. Take no prisoners and make them think their heads are attached to their butts.

Defense, snuff the ball carriers and put the QB on his back so many times he’ll be afraid of his own shadow. Offense, be relentless and run through them, around them and pick them apart in the air. While you are at it, outscore the classless bast—ds as much as possible.

Gooooooo Bruuuuuiiiiins!!!!

There WAS something in the air that day.

I also went into the game not expecting to win. But on the morning of the second, I awoke in an unnaturally good mood. I would describe my mentality for the rest of the day as, “hey, the bigger they come the harder they fall.” If I ran into Trogan fans talking trash, I would not even engage them; I would just say, “hey, the bigger they come the harder they fall.”

After meeting up with my brother and an old friend we stopped by Costco to pick up some tailgating supplies. One of the employees saw my Bruin Blue jersey and lit into me. I asked him what kind of chances we had. He responded, “none.” I asked him, “Not even one chance in a hundred.” He was gloating when he said, “Not even that.” So I asked him. “Well, if we don’t have one chance in a hundred; why don’t we bet my one dollar against your one hundred dollars?” His face dropped. He wouldn’t take that bet.

Later when we got to the Rose Bowl, the Trogans were strangely subdued. Ordinarily insufferable, they uncharacteristically courteous and lacking the bravado a 7 year win streak instills in you. Some would ask what we thought would happen. I would shrug my shoulders and say, “the bigger they come the harder they fall.”

Here is to the fall of Troy! Go Bruins!
